‘He applied, I approved': Anwar says of RM486,000 Japan trip bill for Dr Mahathir
MELAKA, June 13 — The government bears almost half a million ringgit in cost for former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's trip to Japan to attend the annual Nikkei conference last month, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said the government allocated approximately RM486,000 for the visit after receiving a formal application from Tun Dr Mahathir.
'There are existing provisions for former prime ministers to apply (for government support for official travel)...and if the sitting prime minister approves, the government will bear the cost, including for Tun Mahathir, who recently requested to attend the Nikkei conference in Japan. He applied, and I approved. I believe the delegation was around seven people.
'I have people asking me why pay for him. He is entitled to apply, but the decision rests with the sitting prime minister...and I decided to approve that RM486,000 for him to go to Japan.
'I just don't want anyone to misunderstand...I just don't want to take a negative attitude. Despite his daily criticisms of the government, we still approved his (travel) application,' Anwar told reporters here yesterday.
On May 30, Tun Dr Mahathir was reported to have attended and delivered a speech at the annual Nikkei Future of Asia conference, a platform he has regularly attended over the years.
On separate development, Anwar said he is giving time to two Cabinet ministers who recently submitted resignation letters, encouraging them to reconsider their decisions.
The Prime Minister said he received the letters from the two ministers applying for leave and resignation, but he had only approved the leave for now.
'...Let them think about it. Personally, I would prefer that they rejoin the Cabinet,' he said.
The ministers in question – Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad – reportedly submitted their resignations following defeats in recent party elections.
The Prime Minister was met after attending an organisational empowerment seminar and a closed-door meeting with PKR leaders here today.
Also present were two PKR vice-presidents Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, secretary-general Senator Fuziah Salleh, Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek, Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim and Hang Tuah Jaya division chief Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
During the seminar, Anwar called on PKR members to heal internal rifts and put aside dissatisfaction following the party polls last month.He also stressed the need for unity and maturity for the party's greater mission.
'Imagine this – I can work with Umno, even hugging it out. Surely we can move past our internal disagreements too. Let's move on for the bigger agenda,' he added. — Bernama

Zambry hopes RM5mil in federal funds will end varsity's water woes

PETALING JAYA : The higher education ministry hopes the Sabah government will be able to resolve the water disruptions at a university in the state with the funds provided by the federal government. Its minister, Zambry Abdul Kadir, said a total of RM5 million had been set aside to resolve Universiti Malaysia Sabah's (UMS) water woes to date, Bernama reported. He said part of the sum would be used to construct an underground pipe. 'There's no issue on UMS's side, but there could be other technical issues in terms of supplying a sufficient amount of water to the main pipes connected to the university,' he was quoted as saying. In May 2023, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the federal government would channel RM3 million to the state government to resolve UMS's water woes. In January 2024, Zambry announced an additional allocation of RM2 million to UMS for the same purpose. Last month, Zambry's deputy, Mustapha Sakmud, blamed the water disruptions at UMS on the tube well, which he said could only supply one million litres of water daily. The campus needs five million litres a day. The Sabah water department then urged the university to enhance its water pumping system as output from the well was sufficient to meet students' daily needs. A faulty indicator was blamed for the failing pumping system.

MACC secures RM4.5mil forfeiture linked to 1MDB from Swiss bank account

(AP pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has secured the forfeiture of US$954,299.58 (RM4.5 million) from a Swiss bank account linked to the misappropriation of 1MDB funds. MACC said the Kuala Lumpur High Court allowed the forfeiture today after the deputy public prosecutor informed the court that there were no objections or claims made by any party during the proceedings. 'Justice K Muniandy granted the application to forfeit the funds held in a BSI Bank account in Switzerland under the name of Derivale Ltd, whose beneficiary is Azlin Alias,' it said in a statement. The forfeiture was carried out under Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. According to MACC, this marks the first successful forfeiture of overseas assets without involving prosecution. It said the funds will now be transferred to the government as part of ongoing recovery efforts related to the 1MDB scandal. Last month, MACC chief Azam Baki said repatriating assets linked to 1MDB remained a difficult process as many of these stolen assets were located overseas. He said the complex nature of the case made international cooperation crucial, especially when it came to tracing and retrieving funds that were siphoned into multiple countries. Azam also said Malaysia lost an estimated RM277 billion to corruption between 2018 and 2023 – an average of RM55 billion a year – describing the amount as 'very alarming'.
