Sulakshan Kulkarni appointed as Deputy Head Coach of Oman men's cricket team

The Hindu20-07-2025
Former Mumbai cricketer and coach Sulakshan Kulkarni was appointed Deputy Head Coach of Oman's men's national cricket team on Sunday.
'We're pleased to welcome Sulakshan Kulkarni as the Deputy Head Coach of the Oman Men's National Team! A seasoned coach with a wealth of domestic and international experience, Kulkarni brings depth and able leadership to our coaching setup as we prepare for the upcoming journey on the global stage,' Oman Cricket posted on X.
Kulkarni was Maharashtra's head coach last domestic season after spending a year tumultous year as coach of the Tamil Nadu team. His stint with Tamil Nadu ended on a bitter note after he pinned the blame of the team's Ranji Trophy semifinal loss to Mumbai on skipper R. Sai Kishore's decision to bat first on a seamer-friendly pitch.
The former Mumbai wicketkeeper-batter, who played 65 First-Class matches and 13 List A games, had guided Mumbai to its 40th Ranji Trophy title in 2012-13 as the team's head coach.

Duleep Trophy: Ishan Kishan To Lead East Zone; Md Shami, Akash Deep Included

India and Bengal fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been named in the East Zone squad for the 2025-26 Duleep Trophy, starting on August 28 in Bengaluru. Apart from Shami, the likes of Akash Deep, and Abhimanyu Easwaran have also been included in the East Zone squad, which will be led by wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who recently scored two half-centuries in two innings for Nottinghamshire in the ongoing County Championship Division One. The 34-year-old Shami was last seen in action in IPL 2025, where he picked up six wickets in nine matches at an economy rate of 11.23 for his new team Sunrisers Hyderabad. His last first-class game was for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy in November 2024. The veteran right-arm pacer last played for India in their victorious 2025 Champions Trophy campaign. Meanwhile, Easwaran, the right-handed opener who warmed the bench in the ongoing Test series against England, will be the vice-captain. Akash Deep, who picked a ten-wicket haul in India's 336-run win in Birmingham, and is in action at The Oval, will handle pace bowling duties alongside Shami, Mukesh Kumar and Suraj Jaiswal. Other prominent players include India all-rounder Riyan Parag and Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra. Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made heads turn with a 35-ball century in IPL 2025 for Rajasthan Royals and struck the fastest century in Youth ODIs on India Under-19's tour of England last month, is amongst the stand-by players. The Duleep Trophy will be held in the old zonal format of six teams and marks the beginning of 2025/26 domestic cricket season. East Zone will begin their campaign with a quarter-final clash against North Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground, with the game's winner set to meet South Zone in the semi-final. East Zone Squad: Ishan Kishan (c) (Jharkhand), Abhimanyu Easwaran (vc) (Bengal), Sandeep Pattnaik (Odisha), Virat Singh (Jharkhand), Denish Das (Assam), Sridam Paul (Tripura), Sharandeep Singh (Jharkhand), Kumar Kushagra (Jharkhand), Riyan Parag (Assam), Utkarsh Singh (Jharkhand), Manishi (Jharkhand), Suraj Jaiswal (Bengal), Mukesh Kumar (Bengal), Akash Deep (Bengal) and Mohammed Shami (Bengal) Stand-bys: Mukhtar Hussain (Assam), Aasirwad Swain (Odisha), Vaibhav Suryavanshi (Bihar), Swastik Samal (Odisha), Sudip Kr Gharami (Bengal) and Rahul Singh (Assam)

Vaibhav Suryavanshi ignored, Mohammed Shami returns as Ishan Kishan named captain in East Zone Duleep Trophy squad

Veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami returned to first-class cricket after nearly nine months, earning a spot in East Zone's squad for the 2025-26 Duleep Trophy. However, 14-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi, fresh off a record-breaking tour with India Under-19s, did not find a place in the main squad. India's Vaibhav Suryavanshi(Action Images via Reuters) The East Zone selectors unveiled a 15-member squad on Thursday, with Ishan Kishan named captain. Kishan has recently shown strong form for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship Division One, where he struck two half-centuries in as many innings. Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who has been part of India's Test setup in England, will serve as vice-captain. Shami, 34, last played red-ball cricket for Bengal in November 2024 in the Ranji Trophy. His most recent Test appearance was in the World Test Championship final in June 2023. His inclusion signals a potential return to long-format cricket, as he picked up six wickets in nine matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad during IPL 2025. While Shami's experience adds firepower to East Zone's pace attack—alongside Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep—the omission of young Vaibhav Suryavanshi from the main squad has raised eyebrows. The teenager stunned observers on India Under-19's tour of England last month by smashing the fastest century in Youth ODI history. Despite that, he finds himself among only six standbys. East Zone's selectors appeared to favour experience and domestic consistency, with Jharkhand duo Virat Singh and Sharandeep Singh—top run-scorers in last season's Ranji Trophy—retaining their places. Assam spinner Manishi, who claimed 22 wickets in the Ranji season, also features prominently. Notably absent from the squad is Sudip Chatterjee, Bengal's leading scorer in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, while his teammate Sudip Kumar Gharami has also been relegated to the standbys. The selection was made by a six-member zonal panel representing Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and Tripura, with Jharkhand's Saurabh Tiwary serving as convener. East Zone will open their Duleep Trophy campaign against North Zone in Bengaluru from August 28. The tournament returns in zonal format. The last time it was played in this format in 2023-24, South Zone were the winners. East Zone Squad for 2025-26 Duleep Trophy: Ishan Kishan (capt), Abhimanyu Easwaran (vc), Sandeep Patnaik, Virat Singh, Denish Das, Sridam Paul, Sharandeep Singh, Kumar Kushagra, Riyan Parag, Utkarsh Singh, Manishi, Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, Mohammed Shami Standbys: Mukhtar Hussain, Aasirwad Swain, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Swastik Samal, Sudip Kumar Gharami, Rahul Singh

The East Zone squad features notable players including seamers Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar , along with all-rounder Riyan Parag . Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is currently part of India's Test squad in England, will serve as the team's vice-captain. The tournament organizers have also named six standby players, including Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who recently made headlines by scoring the fastest century in Youth ODIs during India Under-19's England tour. Left-arm spinner Manishi, who took 22 wickets in seven games, and Jharkhand's top run-scorers Virat Singh and Sharandeep Singh are also among the standbys. The Duleep Trophy's format has undergone changes in recent years.
