Wisconsins Cheese Makers ask USDA to release funding, and they do
MADISON, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – After WI Proud and Fox 25/48 reported that the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA) was asking for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to release funding for Dairy Business Innovation grants, that is precisely what the USDA has done.
USDA froze DBI grant monies last week, triggering grave concern for hundreds of dairy farmers and processors, and sparking a national advocacy push.
'The release of this critical grant funding comes as an enormous relief to dairy farmers and processors who had earned grants and needed reimbursement from USDA for business improvements already made,' said Rebekah Sweeney, WCMA Senior Director of Programs & Policy. 'We want to express our thanks for USDA's expedited review of this program and today's decision, and thanks to the dairy leaders who pushed to secure all committed funds, and to the members of Congress who championed our cause – in particular, Senator Tammy Baldwin and Representative Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin.'
This week, WCMA led a comprehensive advocacy campaign for the release of DBI funds, with staff and dairy processors meeting with Congressional leaders in Washington DC, joined by partners from the International Dairy Foods Association. WCMA directly communicated with USDA leadership and coordinated a letter to the agency from 120 businesses in 29 states.
There are four DBI centers across the country, housed in California, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin to serve dairy farmers and processors regionally, supporting them with technical assistance, market analysis, research and development, as well as direct-to-business grants. All four DBI centers have now been notified of the USDA release of funding, and reimbursement requests from businesses may resume immediately. A total of 420 dairy farmers and processors were impacted by the freeze of $28.6 million in awarded monies.
'The targeted, small-dollar investments in dairy businesses provided through DBI have helped to stabilize and strengthen our nation's food supply chain and rural economies,' said Sweeney. 'We're grateful for the opportunity to continue this important work, and will push for increased DBI funding in the year ahead, alongside our allies in industry and in Congress.'

An Open Letter to the President: Addressing our Debt
Donald J. TrumpThe Mar-a-Lago Club1100 South Ocean BoulevardPalm Beach, Florida Dear President Trump: I voted for you in all three of your presidential campaigns. The first time, I cast my vote with cautious optimism. The third time, with enthusiasm. And I contributed financially to your campaign. You have achieved what few thought possible - a triumphant return, driven by a deep-seated belief among millions of Americans that only you can effectively challenge the entrenched political establishment. Your first 100 days were extraordinary, but if your presidency is to be remembered not just as bold but also historic, one challenge must rise above all others: - the national debt. The national debt, currently $37 trillion, is the result of pervasive fiscal irresponsibility, accumulated over many decades. Our annual interest payments now exceed $1trillion - more than we spend on our national defense. This is not just a financial burden. It is a threat to the survival of our country as a democratic republic. Without immediate, decisive action, the consequences are predictable: more credit downgrades, more increases in interest rates, and crippling obligations to service the debt. What would happen to our great country if annual interest payments exceeded not just our defense budget but also Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare? Mr. President, if we are to remain a vibrant nation, this exploding national debt has to be attacked immediately and significantly. That will not happen without your leadership. Sadly, the Republican Party has shown that it is not a reliable ally. Even before Republicans regained control of the House, they held a secret vote. By a margin of 158 to 2 they brought back earmarks - the very same pork barrel spending practices that Speaker John Boehner put to bed. Since then, the Democratic Congress never dared to bring back earmarks. House Republicans did. The results were predictable, and immediate: $16 billion in earmarks. More than 7,500 pet projects. In the Senate, eight of the 12 largest earmarkers are Republicans. In the House, 48 of the top earmarkers are Republicans. Here are the largest earmarkers: Sen. Susan Collins of Maine (population 1.4 million) secured $870 million in earmarks. Sen. Lisa Murkowski grabbed $851.1 million in earmarks. Sen. Mitch McConnell took nearly $500 million in earmarks. My own congressman, Brian Mast, walked away with $437 million in earmarks. Obviously, eliminating pork barrel spending wont, by itself, address the structural problems in Washingtons budget process - or make the "big, beautiful bill" currently being debated in Congress deficit-neutral. But if members of Congress cant even control themselves, what kind of example do they set for the American people? How can politicians ask their fellow Americans to sacrifice when they wont do it themselves? Actions speak louder than words. Fiscal irresponsibility dominates the culture within Congress, within our government. That culture, obviously, will not change on its own. It can be changed. But only with your leadership. Mr. President, fortunately, today you have a tool to attack waste, fraud, duplication, and incompetence. Because of the cloud, Big Data, and the Freedom of Information Act, you can deliver every government expenditure to every citizens cell phone, iPad, and computer. You can bring a new era to government, i.e., transparency. Mr. President, you can be the launch pad for transparency. Imagine a government where every single taxpayer dollar that government spends is tracked and reported to the public. Imagine the cultural shift from secret votes, from wasteful spending to one where every government official knows their budgets will be scrutinized in detail. Mr. President, here are several all-encompassing, culture-changing, deficit-attacking actions you can announce tomorrow: Lead by example: Cut White House expenses by a defined percentage. Report the savings to the public every quarter. Challenge Congress: Ask every member to cut their office and committee budgets. Suggest at least 10%. Publish a quarterly report on every senator and representative. Eliminate pork-barrel projects: Call on Congress to abolish earmarks. Shine a light on every remaining earmarker until they fall in line. Mobilize the bureaucracy: Instruct all agencies to focus on rooting out waste, fraud, duplication, and incompetence, and report the progress quarterly. Say explicitly that you will monitor progress and report the bold and expose the complacent. Bringing transparency to government can do more than clean up wasted taxpayer dollars. It can rebuild trust. It can remind the American people that the government can still work for them. It will solidify your legacy as the chief executive who did not just talk about draining the swamp, you did it. Imagine our country if we did not have to spend $1 trillion each year on interest payments. That is the future Americans deserve. Mr. President, you have been given a historic mandate. You can leave office with a legacy as the president who did not just promise to "Make America Great Again," but who actually did it. America cannot be made great again without addressing the greatest threat to our countrys survival as a democratic republic - the exploding national debt. Respectfully, Thomas W. Smith Thomas W. Congress Is Working on a New Crypto Bill. Here's What Investors Need to Know.
Stablecoins have exploded in popularity, and are now a $250 billion industry. Washington lawmakers are in the process of delivering a final piece of stablecoin legislation before the end of the summer. New legislation should make it more attractive for cryptocurrency investors to get exposure to stablecoins. 10 stocks we like better than Circle Internet Group › In June 2020, the value of the crypto stablecoin industry was $10 billion. Five years later, it's now a $250 billion industry. That makes stablecoins one of the fastest-growing areas of the crypto market right now. In fact, stablecoins have grown so fast and have become so popular that they have attracted the attention of Congress, which is looking for ways to regulate them. There are now two competing pieces of legislation, one in the House and one in the Senate, and the goal is to have a final bill passed before the end of the summer. For crypto investors, this new legislation could have important consequences. In theory, it should make stablecoins much more approachable for the average investor. And it will help to define how stablecoins fit into the world of traditional finance. If Congress is interested in this new stablecoin trend, then you need to be aware of it as well. Before digging into the new stablecoin legislation, it's important to understand what stablecoins are, and how they work. Most stablecoins are pegged 1:1 to the value of the U.S. dollar. As a result, many refer to them as "digital dollars." In theory, you can always exchange $1 worth of stablecoins for $1 in cash. That's what makes them so valuable: They are the easiest way to move between the worlds of traditional finance and blockchain finance. Right now, two stablecoins -- Tether (CRYPTO: USDT) and USDC (CRYPTO: USDC) -- account for approximately 85% of the value of the stablecoin market. But there are plenty of new, up-and-coming stablecoins, including one that has been issued by World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture affiliated with the Trump family. To give you an idea of just how big stablecoins have become, of the top 50 cryptocurrencies (as ranked by market cap), five of them are now stablecoins. The easiest way to spot them is by looking for cryptos trading at a price of exactly $1. In order for stablecoin legislation to be signed into law by President Trump later this summer, congressional lawmakers need to settle their differences about what should be included in the final bill. At the beginning of this year, this seemed like an easy thing to do. But if you've been following all the ruckus around the "Big, Beautiful Bill," it is now obvious that getting the House and Senate to agree on anything these days is challenging. When you add in the fact that a Trump-affiliated crypto venture (World Liberty Financial) is now an emerging player in the stablecoin industry, things get even more complicated. According to Rep. French Hill (R-Ark.), the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, there are three major points of contention around stablecoins that need to be ironed out between the two chambers. The first involves the oversight of foreign issuers of stablecoins. Legislators want firm assurances that foreign stablecoin issuers will be held to the same strict standards as U.S. stablecoin issuers. This is important because Tether, the world's largest stablecoin issuer, is not based in the United States. The second involves who has the authority to regulate these stablecoins at both the state and federal levels. Just a year ago, the obvious choice at the federal level would have been the SEC. But it now looks like another regulatory body might get the nod. The third involves who has the right to issue stablecoins. Historically, there has been a firm dividing line between banking and commerce in the United States. Banks and other financial services firms should be able to issue stablecoins, right? But can Silicon Valley tech companies issue stablecoins? And can entities affiliated with political figures issue stablecoins? If you are interested in investing in stablecoins, there are several potential strategies to pursue. The most straightforward approach is to invest in stablecoin issuers themselves. The obvious choice here is Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL), which went public on June 5. Circle is the company behind USDC, the second-largest stablecoin in the world. Or, you might decide to focus on publicly traded companies that are moving aggressively into stablecoins. For example, in August 2023, PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) launched a new stablecoin called PayPal USD (CRYPTO: PYUSD), which is currently valued at $1 billion. You could also decide to focus on cryptocurrencies with "companion" stablecoins. For example, Ripple, the company behind the XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) token, issued a companion stablecoin called Ripple USD (CRYPTO: RLUSD) in December 2024. The goal was to spur activity on the XRP blockchain, thereby boosting demand for the XRP token. And, of course, you could invest in stablecoins themselves. This might sound a bit odd at first. Why would you take $1 and invest it in an asset that will always trade for $1? However, new stablecoin yield strategies are exploding in popularity. As a result, you might be able to earn more on that "digital dollar" than on dollars sitting in your bank account. While stablecoins might sound confusing, they are now one of the fastest-growing areas of the crypto world, and can no longer be ignored. With new stablecoin legislation scheduled to be signed later this summer, it should create even more momentum for the top players in this emerging space. Republicans may need an AI boom to have any hope of paying for their 'one big, beautiful bill'
President Trump is promising blockbuster economic growth that spans the entire coming decade in part because that is what's needed to make his "big, beautiful bill" make fiscal sense. Even wary economists say there is one long-shot way it could happen: an AI-fueled boom. The fight over the price tag for Trump's multitrillion-dollar reconciliation package has complicated its progress in the Senate as the White House makes a case for why the bill will actually pay for itself. The administration's case hinges on expectations of 3% annual economic growth for the next 10 years. So perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that Trump aides are touting the boost that artificial intelligence could provide to the nation's gross domestic product in the coming years. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent brought up AI multiple times as he testified to Congress on Wednesday, saying at one point, "Given this gigantic AI spend that we're seeing, the productivity increases from that may hit the US economy within the next 12 to 24 months and could accelerate our GDP growth." He said the technology could lead to growth above the already aggressive projections from Republican lawmakers of 2.6% in the decade ahead. David Sacks, Trump's czar for AI and crypto, went even further while speaking to an Amazon Web Services summit in Washington on Tuesday. "I could see AI driving our growth rate to something like 4% or 5%," he said, acknowledging that AI could present some challenges, but that it will be "a huge economic tailwind for us." It is perhaps one of the few areas of tentative agreement between Trump's team and economists, who have an $11 trillion gap in how they see Trump's fiscal agenda playing out. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has been raising alarms about the price tag of Trump's bill from the start. Marc Goldwein, the group's senior policy director, spoke to Yahoo Finance recently and called the White House projections "ridiculous," saying of potential economic growth, "If we did maybe every single policy right, and we got an incredible amount of luck, maybe we could get into the high twos." He added that there is a very outside scenario where things go higher. If that happens, though, he says, it would "have very little to do with this tax bill [and be because] AI creates a massive productivity surge, things like that, that are unrelated to this and it wouldn't be sustained." Indeed, the bill itself, as currently written, has very little to do with AI, but some academic studies suggest there is potential for AI to lead to at least some additional economic growth. As a recent Congressional Research Service compilation put it, "estimates of the effects of AI on U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) in the short and long run vary but are typically positive." Goldman Sachs (GS) has pegged the possible additional GDP at up to 0.9%. A recent MIT paper offered a similar conclusion. But nearly every study is also quick to note that the effects of AI are highly uncertain and also come with some less appealing effects — especially for workers who may lose their jobs. The comments from Sacks this week addressed those concerns from what he called "the doomer cult," saying job dislocations could be possible, "and I don't want to minimize that ... but I think it's going to be a really bright future." Bessent also suggested during his testimony this week that in addition to a "productivity breakthrough," AI could also save the government money. In the case of the Internal Revenue Service, he said, "I think that we are at the dawn of being able to greatly increase individual and experienced auditor productivity via AI."
