Arsenal and Chelsea dealt blow in pursuit of £49m transfer target
Arsenal and Chelsea have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, according to reports.
Both Premier League clubs are seeking wide attacking reinforcements in the summer transfer window and had earmarked WIlliams as a potential target.
Arsenal, in particular, were keen on on securing a deal, having failed with a move to sign the 22-year-old following Spain's success at Euro 2024
Andrea Berta, the club's new sporting director, had even met representatives to discuss a deal for the winger who has a €58 million (£49m) release clause in his current deal.
Williams enjoyed a solid season with Athletic, scoring 11 goals and seven assists in all competitions to help guide his boyhood club back into the Champions League.

And the Spain international could now be set to extend his stay with the club, with Ben Jacobs reporting that he has begun talks over renewing his contract, which is due to expire in June 2027.
While talks are still at an early stage, reports suggest that Williams could be offered a yearly salary of €10m (£8.5m) which would represent a significant increase on his current earnings.
A new deal would also come with an increased release clause, which could price potential suitors out of a deal.
Barcelona were previously interested in Williams' signature, but the Catalan giants have indicated that they will not look to sign the Spaniard this summer.
'He was one of the candidates we were looking at when we were evaluating options,' Barcelona president Juan Laporta told TV3 when asked about Barca's interest in Williams.
'We have a good profile of this player, who is an excellent player, but I think at this moment they are evaluating other options.' More Trending
Arsenal and Chelsea, meanwhile, could also turn their attentions elsewhere as they plot reinforcements for their respective squads.
Both clubs have been heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, although new manager Xabi Alonso has been keen to quash speculation linking the Brazilian with a summer exit.
Chelsea have also reportedly opened talks to sign Borussia Dortmund youngster Jamie Gittens.
The Englishman is keen on a move away from the Bundesliga club and could be available for a fee in the region of £50m.

Kevin Thelwell goes public with Rangers transfer promise to Russell Martin as recruitment vision laid bare
The new sporting director spoke for the first time following Martin's appointment as boss Kevin Thelwell says he'll never sign a new player for Rangers without gaffer Russell Martin's approval first. The Ibrox club's new sporting director spoke for the first time on Thursday as Martin was unveiled as Philippe Clement's successor. Thelwell recently left Premier League side Everton and has already made an impact at Rangers by bringing in Goodison Park recruitment guru Dan Purdy as Nils Koppen's replacement. The 51-year-old will oversee Martin's first transfer window this summer, as the club look to improve the squad's strength and quality. But Thelwell is adamant that he'll work together with Martin on signings and won't bring anyone to the club the manager isn't keen on. He said: 'Put very simply, we've got a head coach and a sporting director. 'Head coaches are responsible for the most important bit - preparation of the team, performance and fundamentally the results. 'My role is to try and make sure that all the support services that sit around Russell are as strong as they possibly can be to give us the best chance of winning. 'When we talk about recruitment, clearly it's going to be a collaborative approach. 'In this role, I've never signed a player for the first team that hasn't been supported by the head coach or the manager. 'So we'll talk a lot about how we want to play. 'We'll talk a lot about what profiles we think we need and what positions. 'Then between Russell and I, and the recruitment team, we'll sit down and identify players that we think can make us better very quickly. 'That's generally how I've worked and how we've discussed how it's going to work here. 'It's a good way of working so that we've got some clarity. 'But it's collaborative. We work together to get the best outcome.' From his time in England, Thelwell has watched Martin's teams at MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton. Gers' new boss has become renowned for a distinct style of play everywhere he's been. Even when it didn't work at Saints in the Premier League last season, which resulted in Martin being sacked, Thelwell saw enough to convince him that he's perfectly suited to Rangers. The sporting director said: 'We've got exactly the right candidate that's a perfect fit for Rangers FC. From my perspective, I've seen Russell's team play for many years. 'Particularly, if I look back at his Championship season - and also the Premier League season with Southampton - there was a lot to be proud of. 'There's a lot that fits Rangers going forward. Russell's explained quite clearly about what he thinks Rangers need in games. 'We need to be dominating in all moments of the game. I'm delighted that we were able to have those conversations and pleased that he's now sat next to me getting ready to work. 'We wanted to make sure we made as strong a decision as we possibly could. 'But we also appreciate there's now a pre-season on the horizon and European games coming thick and fast.' Martin is unlikely to get a settling in period at Rangers as fans demand success this season. But Thelwell is convinced the new Ibrox gaffer is ready to meet the challenge head on. He said: 'It was clear from the start to all of us that Russell was the outstanding candidate and we're delighted he's joined us. 'He's had a strong career, over 250 games both as a manager or head coach. 'Over the course of that journey, he's sharpened his approach, from a technical and tactical perspective - but also from a personal perspective. 'I'm very excited to see what he's going to bring to Rangers and the team is very much looking forward to working with him.'

Sarina Wiegman breaks silence on Millie Bright making herself unavailable for England's Euros title defence
Sarina Wiegman has spoken for the first time since Millie Bright ruled herself out of contention for England 's Euros squad. Bright confirmed she was making herself unavailable in an emotional statement on Wednesday due to not being able to give 100 per cent 'mentally or physically'. The 31-year-old, who played in every game of England's Euros triumph three years ago and captained the side to the World Cup final in 2023, became the third England player to drop out in eight days following the international retirements of Mary Earps and Fran Kirby. After naming her 23-player squad on Thursday, Wiegman was asked for her thoughts on Bright's situation and whether any more could have been done to help her. Wiegman responded: 'It's sad. It's disappointing. It's not nice...I just hope she feels well soon. 'We are in conversations, what we all tried to do is perform at the highest level, recover, and do that again. That's what Chelsea is in, and the players want to be involved in. You try to manage minutes and that is what Sonia [Bompastor] and we have been doing too. Bright captained Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses to the World Cup final two years ago 'What we try to do also is give all the support off the pitch, and you hope that players stay in a good place, and unfortunately, that is not the case at the moment for Millie.' Bright won a domestic Treble with Chelsea this season, but withdrew from England's squad for their recent Nations League matches with Portugal and Spain. Appearing on her podcast Daly Brightness with former England team-mate Rachel Daly last week, Bright revealed why she had chosen to step away from international duty for now. 'I think mentally and physically I'm at my limits, which is why I'm not at camp,' Bright told the Aston Villa star. 'That is a really hard decision but I think you know better than anyone as well - sometimes you just have to take that time for yourself. 'You need to value yourself and your mental health and body, and just say that no, right now is not the time for you.' Bright has won 88 caps for England since making her debut in 2016 and will leave a significant void at the heart of the defence this summer when the Lionesses head to Switzerland. England have been handed a tough group which will see them face France, the Netherlands and Wales. With Bright not in the picture, Wiegman opted to name five centre back options in her Euros squad - captain Leah Williamson, Alex Greenwood, Esme Morgan, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Maya Le Tissier - while Jess Carter can also play centrally or at full back.

Rising Man Utd star explains why he left Arsenal after Mikel Arteta criticism
Ayden Heaven decided to leave Arsenal for Manchester United earlier this year and he has revealed his main motivation was to secure more regular game time - while also being convinced by Ruben Amorim that the defender would be a good fit for his style of play Manchester United defender Ayden Heaven has revealed he left Arsenal because he felt he would get more minutes at Old Trafford and that Ruben Amorim 's style of play would suit him. The 18-year-old joined the Red Devils in February, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal and has already made his debut - playing six times in total under Amorim in the 2024-25 season. Heaven said that Amorim's eagerness to hand him opportunities - especially after a worrying injury crisis in the squad - was part of the reason he decided to leave Arsenal and make the move up north. He said he had done his homework on United, claiming that the club handed the most minutes to teenagers in the previous campaign and wanted to be part of the youngsters being developed. When asked what his main reason for moving to United was, he told MUTV: "The opportunities that the young players have got here in the past. I think United had the most minutes given to teenagers last season [2023-24]. "That convinced me to come here. And the people and the fans here are quite loving, and I felt that when I was playing. They're so supportive." On what Amorim told him to convince him to move, Heaven added: "He just said that our play style will suit me, because they play three at a back and I play on the left of the three, so that allows me to run with the ball. That's one of my strengths. And defending out wide is one of my strengths as well." Heaven made one senior appearance for Arsenal, playing in a Carabao Cup win over Preston in October. However, at United he has come on as a sub against Fulham in the FA Cup and against the Gunners in the Premier League. His first start came against Real Sociedad in the Europa League last-16 in March and he also started against Leicester in a 3-0 win in the Premier League the same month - before injury ruled him out for the season. Heaven did recover and was part of the group that travelled for United's post season tour of Asia, scoring for United in a 3-1 win over Hong Kong. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has sometimes been criticised over his reluctance to give youngsters a chance in the first team after both Heaven and Chido Obi opted to leave the Emirates for United - although he has appeared to change his policy after overseeing Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly's breakthrough seasons. But former players have hinted at their frustration with the lack of opportunities given by the Spaniard after Omari Hutchison's brother Oshaye urged Gunners starlets to be "freed". Hutchison was part of the Arsenal youth set up for seven years before leaving for Chelsea in 2022 and eventually joining Ipswich. "Some people owe my brother an apology," Oshaye said last year. "All the abuse and hate comments he received when he left Arsenal. I hope you guys are all seeing why! "Man City [youth] debut, Chelsea debut, Liverpool, Spurs youth played. Arsenal [did not]. I feel sorry for my Arsenal youth man. Free the guys." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
