Running back Ashton Jeanty has high expectations placed on his shoulders. The Boise State product is coming off an electric final season in college and is expected to help the Raiders turn their fortunes around even as a rookie.
Jeanty nearly set all-time records at Boise State in 2024. He played in 14 games and ran for 2,601 yards with 29 touchdowns. Jeanty was on the heels of Barry Sanders' record of 2,628 yards in a season but fell just 27 yards short. His 29 touchdowns were eight shy of Sanders' record of 37.
Even though the Raiders are just starting the preseason, there is pressure for Jeanty to show that he was worth the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft off rip. Las Vegas traded for quarterback Geno Smith this offseason and hired former Seattle head coach Pete Carroll to try to right the ship. While there are still plenty of upgrades on both sides of the ball that the Raiders need to explore, the hope is that the offense runs through Jeanty all season, and that starts on Thursday night in the preseason opener against Seattle.

Here's a look at how Jeanty fared in his first taste of NFL game action.
Grading Ashton Jeanty's rookie debut
Grade: C
Unfortunately, there wasn't a ton to grade. Jeanty was on the field for two drives, but the Raiders weren't able to move the ball on either. Jeanty had only three carries and amassed -1 yard from his workload. The offensive line could not provide any protection for him, and after an initial gain of three yards, he was dropped in the backfield.
He picked up a few blocks on routine passing plays, but ultimately, he did nothing notable in the passing game either.
As mundane as this performance was, Jeanty should be fine in the long run. The rookie will almost assuredly lead the team in touches and will get ample opportunity to show what he can do throughout the rest of the preseason and regular season. This first preseason game, though? He will have to have the mind of a goldfish and instantly turn his attention to the team's game next week.
The lone reason that he didn't get a "D" or an "F" for his debut was that he had a sweet, spur-of-the-moment spin move to avoid a tackle before the offensive line collapsed and allowed him to get taken down in the backfield.

Ashton Jeanty debut stats
Carries: 3
Yards: -1
Touchdowns: 0
Targets: 0
Receptions: 0
The first play of the game was a fake to Jeanty. The rookie's first carry went for three yards. That was the only action he received on his first drive. Seattle took out Geno Smith for the second drive but left Jeanty in. The rookie got a carry on second down. He hit a nice spin move but was tackled in the backfield as the offensive line didn't provide much support.
After a first down, Jeanty got a carry and picked up a few yards. There was a penalty for offensive offside, but it was declined to bring up second down. Jeanty was then subbed out, and the Raiders couldn't convert a first down on the next two plays and had to punt.

Dub Hub: Warriors docuseries ‘First in 40' highlights Steve Kerr's coaching debut

In today's Dub Hub: Warriors release Episode 1 of First in 40: The Story of the 2014–15 Warriors. Warriors rank 7th in latest Western Conference power rankings. Celtics and head coach Joe Mazzulla agree to multi-year contract extension. The Golden State Warriors have officially released Episode 1 of First in 40: The Story of the 2014–15 Warriors—a three-part documentary chronicling the franchise's first NBA title run in 40 years. The premiere episode, titled 'Foundation,' pulls back the curtain on Steve Kerr's early days as head coach, stepping into a talented but unproven roster and introducing a brand-new offensive system built on movement, spacing, and unselfish play. Having said that, the offense didn't click right away, and some players were skeptical of these new changes. But as Draymond Green recalled Kerr saying, 'The ball will find the guys who are supposed to get the shots.' That approach would become the foundation of the Warriors' dynasty and eventually reshape how the NBA was played for years to come. From building on the groundwork laid by Mark Jackson to the early buy-in that changed the team's identity, Episode 1 captures the moment the Warriors started to believe they could be champions. Watch the full episode on the Warriors' official YouTube channel: For more on this and other news around the NBA, here is our latest news round-up for Friday, August 8th: Warriors News: It has never been tougher to build an NBA dynasty | ESPN But since the Warriors won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018, the NBA has seen seven different champions hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy, the longest stretch of parity in league history. There have been 11 different finalists in that span, another league record. And in each of the past six postseasons, the defending champion has failed to reach the conference finals. The last time the NBA had a similar period of parity was in the late 1970s, when there were six different champions from 1975 to 1980 with eight different Finals teams. Likely Jonathan Kuminga reunion with Warriors could create unwanted spectacle | NBC Sports Bay Area 'He's a (scoring) monster at the four,' a former NBA player-turned-analyst, referring to Kuminga, tells NBC Sports Bay Area. 'But that's Draymond position. I hate Draymond's game. Hate his game. But his IQ makes him a Hall of Famer. It's through the roof. And that team needs it.' Seth Curry recalls an on-court trash talk moment between him and Draymond Green Offseason Power Rankings: Thunder clear favorites to repeat in West | NBA Even if Kuminga were to stay (via the qualifying offer or a new contract), there will still be four or five additional roster spots to fill. Al Horford and Gary Payton II will reportedly fill two of those spots, giving the Warriors a good chance to remain in the top 10 defensively. Taking some of the offensive burden off Curry may be a tougher task. Butler got to the line a ton, but had an effective field goal percentage of just 50.4% over his 42 games (regular season, SoFi Play-In and playoffs combined) with Golden State. Damion Lee recalls story of Steph Curry reading hate comments at halftime NBA News: Celtics sign Joe Mazzulla to contract extension | NBA 'We are very excited that Joe has agreed to extend with the Celtics,' said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens. 'He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans. He's worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach – including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics.' Malik Beasley, subject of gambling probe, evicted from apartment | ESPN Malik Beasley, an NBA player under investigation in a federal gambling probe, was evicted from his high-rise apartment in Detroit on Wednesday, according to court records. Beasley's landlord sued him twice this year in Michigan's 36th District Court for a total of $21,505 in unpaid rent, the records show. The first case was dismissed in March, but the court issued an eviction order in the second suit — for $7,355 — after Beasley failed to respond. The eviction order was first reported by the Detroit News. Hawks' Dyson Daniels breaks down his best defensive plays from last season In case you missed it at Golden State of Mind: Should Jonathan Kuminga start for the Warriors if he re-signs? So now we're left trying to fit Kuminga into a lineup of Curry, Green, Butler, and a center, likely Horford. Could that work? The spacing would be clunky as hell. The four non-Currys in that lineup can all make a three, but none of them are exactly weapons from deep. Defensively, however, it would be fascinating. Green, Butler, and Kuminga could feasibly switch one-through-five against most lineups and Horford, even at the tail end of his career, remains a comfortably above-average defender, both on and off-ball, and against both traditional bigs and more modern ones. It's a lineup I'd be extremely intrigued by, but it's also a disaster waiting to happen that they probably shouldn't start the game or the season with. A tweet to end the week:

Panthers to debut starters in preseason game against Browns

The Carolina Panthers will take the field Friday night for the team's first preseason game. They will face the Cleveland Browns at Bank of America Stadium in Uptown. The game is primetime preseason viewing for multiple reasons. Much of the NFL world will be watching to get a better look at Browns' quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who is fourth on the depth chart. READ MORE: Shedeur Sanders set to start against Panthers in Browns preseason opener However, that is not the Panthers' focus. Head coach Dave Canales already said that he will be playing starters Friday night, which is something he didn't do last year. Bryce Young and the first-team offense will take the field for one or two series. We're also getting a look at the Panthers defense, specifically along the defensive front where they spent a lot of money during free agency. Last year, this defense finished among the worst in the league. Canales said he won't be calling plays, which means offensive coordinator Brad Idzik will. 'Really, he's been calling all of training camp,' Canales said. 'In our practices, we're scripted out that way and I trust Brad. We've been together forever.' Canales added, 'When he calls a practice like that, it really allows me to be engaged on both sides. Some of my mentors challenged me, make sure the defense can feel you. Make sure special teams can feel you. They need what you have to bring.' The same goes for the defense, he said. They'll have two of the position coaches calling games during the preseason Canales said they want to develop the coaching staff, too like his mentors did for him. Detroit Tigers promote reliever Codi Heuer from Triple-A Toledo, replacing Luke Jackson

A new reliever has entered Comerica Park. The Detroit Tigers promoted right-handed reliever Codi Heuer from Triple-A Toledo on Friday, Aug. 8, before the opener of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels. The Tigers acquired Heuer from the Texas Rangers at the July 31 trade deadline for cash considerations, then assigned him to Triple-A Toledo. Heuer has not given up a run in two appearances with Triple-A Toledo. SHAWN WINDSOR: Riley Greene is talented but streaky. Detroit Tigers desperately need more consistency To crate space for Heuer, right-handed reliever Luke Jackson was designated for assignment. Removing Jackson opened a spot for Heuer on the 26-man roster, but Heuer was already on the 40-man roster. The 40-man roster is now at 39 players.
