'He was a good son-in-law': Family mourns FRU corporal killed in crash

PARIT BUNTAR: The remains of Corporal Muhamad Akmal Muhamad, 35, were laid to rest at the Islamic Cemetery of Masjid Al-Mubarak, Kampung Telok Pial, Kuala Kurau, at around 7.30am today.
Earlier, the late Muhamad Akmal was brought from Surau Ar-Rahman at the Hilir Perak district police headquarters to Unit 5 of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) base in Sungai Senam for a final honours ceremony.
His remains were then taken to his in-laws' house at 6.15am before being brought to the mosque at 6.45am for funeral prayers and burial.
More than 100 residents and family members were present, and a sombre atmosphere enveloped the cemetery as the body was lowered into the grave.
He is survived by his wife and two young children, aged six and two.
His father-in-law, Mohd Hadzri Nafiah, 79, said the last time he saw his son-in-law was during Aidilfitri, when Akmal had brought his wife and children back to the village.
Hadzri said he was informed of the incident at 9am yesterday when a neighbour came over and asked him to sit down, recite istighfar, and brace himself.
"After being told what had happened, I was stunned and asked, 'Is this news true?'
"My wife and I immediately called our daughter (Akmal's wife) to confirm what had happened.
"Once it was confirmed, I contacted Akmal's parents in Kelantan. After some discussion, we agreed to have the burial here, as it is closer than bringing the body back to Kelantan," he told reporters when met in Kampung Telok Pial, Kuala Kurau, last night.
He added that the deceased was a good son-in-law and a quiet person, but his wish to celebrate Hari Raya Haji in Kelantan this year was not to be.
Akmal was among nine FRU members who died in an accident involving a lorry carrying stones on Jalan Chikus – Sungai Lampam yesterday.
The other victims were Sergeant S. Perumal, 44; Sergeant Mohd Roslan Abd Rahim, 46; Corporal Mohd Pozli Jaudin, 41; Corporal Nurit Pandak, 34; Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, 38; Corporal Mohamad Hilmi Mohd Azlan, 38; Lance Corporal Damarrulan Abdul Latif, 33; and Constable Akmal Wafi Annuar, 28.
Nine other FRU members are currently receiving treatment at Teluk Intan Hospital.

Permit applications drop but police to tighten firework monitoring

KOTA BARU: As Hari Raya Aidiladha approaches, the Kelantan police have noted a low number of permit applications from traders intending to sell fireworks and firecrackers - a stark contrast to previous festive seasons. Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said that despite the drop in applications, police would continue to monitor trading activities, especially in public areas such as roadside stalls, markets and night bazaars. "We remind traders with valid permits to strictly adhere to the conditions set. "Non-compliance could lead to legal action, including seizure of goods and possible revocation of permits," he said. Mohd Yusoff also advised parents to remain vigilant and monitor their children's activities during the festive season, especially to prevent accidents involving unauthorised or dangerous fireworks. "Public safety is our priority. While we want everyone to enjoy the celebrations, safety should never be compromised," he said. A check around several areas in the state today found that fireworks and firecrackers were already being sold, particularly in high-traffic spots such as the 24-hour Wakaf Che Yeh night market. During the previous Aidilfitri festive season, the Kelantan Health Department reported more than 30 cases of firework-related injuries, many involving children and teenagers. "Let's not repeat past mistakes. What may seem like harmless fun could end in tragedy," Mohd Yusoff added.

JPJ seizes lorry, investigates company over permit breaches in fatal FRU crash in Teluk Intan

KOTA BHARU, June 6 —The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has opened an investigation paper against the lorry company involved in the fatal accident which took the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel in Teluk Intan, Perak, last month. JPJ senior director (enforcement) Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the investigation was being conducted under Section 57 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010. 'JPJ has seized the lorry involved, and the investigating officer has been instructed to complete the investigation paper by the end of this month. 'Once completed, the investigation paper will be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action,' he told reporters after observing the Ops Hari Raya Aidiladha here last night. He said the initial investigation found that there was a violation of permit conditions involving the lorry company. 'The lorry company was found to have violated the permit conditions by carrying an unauthorised load, namely stones, while the permit approved was to transport coal. 'We are still investigating the case and appropriate action will be taken,' he said. On May 12, a lorry driven by a man collided with a truck carrying 18 FRU members on Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampan, Teluk Intan, while they were on their way back to Ipoh. As a result of the accident, nine FRU members were killed, while nine others were injured. — Bernama
