Warsaw archbishop asks Vatican to defrock Polish priest charged with the killing of a homeless man
Prosecutors on Saturday charged the priest, only identified as Mirosław M. in line with Polish privacy rules, with murder with particular cruelty. He is being detained ahead of a trial and faces 15 years to life behind bars.
Investigators say the priest and the victim, Anatol Cz., were together in a car late Thursday when an argument broke out, according to Aneta Góźdź, a spokesperson for the Radom District Prosecutor's Office.
The fight stemmed from a donation agreement where the priest had agreed to provide lifelong assistance and care for the man, Góźdź said in a statement. The argument escalated over the homeless man's future housing.
The priest allegedly struck the victim on the head with an axe, doused him in flammable liquid and set him on fire, the spokesperson said. The priest then drove away when he saw a bicycle light approaching.
The bicyclist found the victim engulfed in flames and called for first responders, Góźdź said.
'An autopsy showed that the victim suffered burns covering 80% of his body and head injuries caused by a sharp-edged heavy object,' Góźdź said.
Warsaw Archbishop Adrian Galbas on Saturday requested the Holy See to dismiss the priest from the priesthood, the highest penalty in canon law for a cleric.
The Vatican did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Prosecutors have formally charged a suspect in the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staff members in Washington DC in May with hate crimes and first-degree murder. They say Mr Rodriguez researched an event on 21 May at the Capital Jewish Museum. Prosecutors allege he bought a ticket to the event, which was sponsored by the American Jewish Committee and attended by both of the victims. The event was described as a networking opportunity to bring Jewish young professionals and the diplomatic community Mr Lischinsky and Ms Milgrim left the museum, the assailant allegedly fired 20 shots and told police at the scene: "I did it for Palestine. I did it for Gaza." The Israeli Ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, said that Mr Lischinsky had just bought an engagement ring and was planning to propose to Ms Milgrim next week in say Mr Rodriguez wrote a document called "explication" in which he expressed his support for Palestine and claimed Israel was trying to exterminate Palestinians. In the charging documents, prosecutors also detailed Mr Rodriguez's eligibility for the death penalty, including that he was older than 18 years of age at the time of the shooting, that he allegedly intentionally killed the victims and did so after substantial planning.

Trump says National Guard coming to DC ‘very quickly' after teens beat ‘handsome' ex-DOGE staffer known as ‘Big Balls'
President Donald Trump said he could call in the National Guard to Washington, D.C. to help tackle crime following an alleged attack on a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer nicknamed 'Big Balls.' Trump has railed against what he called the capital's 'out of control' crime rate this week and said he would call Edward Coristine, the 19-year-old hired by Elon Musk, to check in on him after he was beaten by a group of teenagers. 'We just almost lost a young man…a beautiful, handsome guy, that got the hell knocked out of him the night before last,' Trump said at an Oval Office event Wednesday. 'I'm gonna call him now, wanted to give him a little recovery time…he went through a bad situation to put it mildly, and there's too much of it, we're going to do something about it.' Trump also repeated his threats to take the responsibility of law enforcement in D.C. away from the city and into the hands of the central government. 'The rate of crime, the rate of muggings, killings and everything else, we're not gonna let it…And that includes bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly too,' Trump added. Trump shared a photo of Coristine Tuesday evening on Truth Social, where he appeared bloodied and beaten following the attack. Coristine was with an unnamed woman in downtown D.C. at 3 a.m. Sunday when a group of juveniles approached their car, according to the police report of the incident. The report explains that the suspects approached the victims standing next to the vehicle parked on the 1400 block of Swann Street and demanded that they hand it over before assaulting one of the victims. During the attack, an MPD cruiser pulled up, prompting the attackers to flee. Two of the suspects were apprehended by the on-scene officers. At the same time, one of the victims [Coristine] was treated by emergency services personnel for injuries sustained during the assault. The pair arrested was two 15-year-olds, a male and a female, from nearby Hyattsville, Maryland. They were subsequently charged with unarmed carjacking. Coristine's iPhone 16, worth $1,000, was reportedly stolen during the incident. Marko Elez, a software engineer who also worked at DOGE, before he resigned over a racist social media post, said he took the photo of his friend following the attack. 'My friend Big Balls is a hero. I took this photo after Edward protected a young woman from an attempted carjacking by eight thugs near Dupont Circle,' Elez wrote on X. 'Violence like this in the heart of D.C. is completely unacceptable.' Musk also posted about the incident on X but likewise did not name Coristine. 'A few days ago, a gang of about a dozen young men tried to assault a woman in her car at night in D.C.,' Musk said Tuesday. Cops share new CCTV in hunt for killer of taxi driver Jesbir Singh Khela, 47, who was found dead in his front seat
POLICE have shared new CCTV images as they investigate the death of a taxi driver who was found dead in the front seat of his cab. It comes six months after the body of Jesbir Singh Khela, 47, was found on the morning of Thursday, February 6, in the driver's seat of his Skoda Octavia. 3 3 3 Known to many as Jessy, the taxi driver's vehicle was found burnt out just before 7.30am in a field off the B659 Langford Road, near Langford. The new CCTV image released by police was from the afternoon before the body of the man, originally from Hertfordshire, was discovered. The footage was captured at the Esso Petrol Station in Letchworth, at 1.22pm on Wednesday, February 5. The death was initially being treated as unexplained, but following inquiries, police opened a murder investigation. This included a forensic postmortem and full examination of the vehicle remains, as well as statements from the people who knew Jessy. Detective Chief Inspector Matt Inwood said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jesbir as this has been a very distressing time for them. "We are continuing to work hard to establish the circumstances around what happened and would urge anyone who may have any information to get in touch with us." He added: 'If you knew Jesbir and have information which could help, or if you witnessed suspicious activity on or around Langford Road overnight on Thursday 6 February, we want to hear from you. It has now been determined that the car left central London shortly after 1am on the morning of February 6, travelling towards Letchworth via the A41. At the time, police say the vehicle may not have been displaying the taxi sign on its roof. A man in his 30s was arrested in June in relation to the incident, but he has since been released on bail as enquiries continue. In a statement to social media, Bedfordshire Police wrote: "We remain committed to uncovering the circumstances that led to Jesbir's death and our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones as they continue to come to terms with their loss."
