3 children orphaned after parents killed in car crash [WATCH]
PEKAN: Three children were left orphaned after their parents were killed in an accident at Batu 8, Lepar, near here yesterday.
Jamal Azizul Samat, 44, and his wife Lizawati Abdullah, 41, from Felda Chini Timur 1, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred at 10pm.
Their three children - two sons and a daughter, aged between six and 17 - who were also travelling in the same car, suffered injuries.
Pekan police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the accident involved Jamal Azizul's Proton Wira, which was heading from Kuantan to Segamat, and a Mitsubishi Fuso lorry travelling in the opposite direction.
"Initial investigations revealed that Jamal Azizul lost control of his car while attempting to overtake another vehicle, causing it to veer into the opposite lane and collide with the oncoming lorry.
"Both Jamal Azizul and his wife were killed instantly. The 31-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt, but his two assistants sustained minor injuries," he said in a statement today.
Zaidi said that the couple's three children, along with the lorry assistants, aged 24 and 37, were taken to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan for treatment.
He said a post-mortem is scheduled to be conducted at the Pekan Hospital forensic unit at 9am today.

Grandma receives heartbreaking call moments after fatal Pekan crash
PEKAN: One of the children whose parents were killed in a tragic road accident near Batu 8, Lepar, made a heart-wrenching video call to their grandmother moments after the crash, crying out in pain and pleading for help. Som Hamzah, 65, said she received the call from her granddaughter shortly after the accident, but the girl was too distraught to speak clearly. "As soon as I answered the call, I knew something was wrong. I could hear two of my grandchildren crying and begging for help in pain. "I didn't realise at the time that their parents – my son and daughter-in-law – had died in the accident," she said when met at the Pekan Hospital forensic unit today. Her son, Jamal Azizul Samat, 44, and his wife, Lizawati Abdullah, 41, were killed in the 10pm crash along Jalan Kuantan–Segamat, near Kampung Batu Lapan, Lepar. Their three children, aged between 6 and 17, sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) in Kuantan. Som said the family had been returning to their home in Muadzam Shah, Rompin, after visiting relatives in Taman Sepakat, Kuantan. "My son had gone to visit his younger sibling to enjoy pulut santan durian (glutinous rice with durian in coconut milk). He loved durian and had spent RM300 on the fruits. "During the gathering, Jamal Azizul also spoke about his plans to buy land and build a house," she said. A sombre atmosphere enveloped the forensic unit this afternoon when two of the couple's children – who are still undergoing treatment – arrived to pay their final respects at 3.15pm. Nursyamimie Jamal Azizul, 17, and Muhammad Syamril Alif, 15, were accompanied by relatives. Their youngest sibling, Muhammad Syakir Iman, was unable to attend as he remains hospitalised. The couple's remains were claimed by family members for burial at the Felda Chini Timur Muslim cemetery at 3.45pm.
