KUANTAN - A man and his wife were killed, while their three children were injured when the car they were travelling in collided with a lorry at Batu 8, Lepar, here last night.
Pekan police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the crash, which occurred at about 10pm, involved a Proton Wira car carrying the family of five and a Mitsubishi Fuso lorry owned by Golden Green Farm. He said initial investigations found that the crash occurred when Jamal Azizul Samat, 44, who was at the wheel of the car, which was heading towards Segamat from Kuantan, was believed to have lost control of the wheel while overtaking another vehicle before entering the opposite lane and colliding with the oncoming lorry.
"As a result of the crash, Jamal Azizul and his wife, Lizawati Abdullah, 41, died at the scene due to serious injuries. Their bodies were sent to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA), Kuantan, for a post-mortem,' he said in a statement.
Mohd Zaidi said the three children, aged six to 17, suffered injuries to the head, face and abdomen, and were sent to the same hospital for treatment.
"The lorry driver Logesvaran Kandan, 31, did not suffer any injuries, while his two passengers, aged 24 and 37 respectively, suffered minor injuries,' he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - BERNAMA

For the first and second charges, the teenager is accused of causing the death of his 51-year-old mother and 21-year-old biological brother at No 7, Jalan RM3, Taman Rambai Mutiara, in the Melaka Tengah district between 5 and 5.30 am on June 12. Advertisement He is charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment for not less than 30 years but not more than 40 years, and if not sentenced to death, can be whipped not less than 12 strokes. No plea was recorded from the accused when the charge was read out in Mandarin by the court interpreter as the murder charge falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Meanwhile, for the third charge, the accused is charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to his 13-year-old younger brother by using a folding knife at the same location on the same date and time. He is charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous bodily harm which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine or whipping. The teenager, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Farah Nabihah Sofian while the accused was represented by lawyer Cassian Anthony, with no bail offered for all three charges. Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani set July 24 for the case to be mentioned again. On June 12, the media reported that a female teacher and her eldest child died while her youngest child was seriously injured, believed to have been stabbed by a teenage boy who was also the victim's second child at their home. The incident is believed to have occurred at around 5 am and the single mother and her son were found lying in a pool of blood in the living room. Johor Cops Bust 21 Drug Rings, Seize RM81 Mln In Drugs Since January
JOHOR BAHRU, June 18 (Bernama) -- Johor police have crippled 21 drug trafficking syndicates and seized illicit narcotics worth RM81.07 million in the first five months of this year. Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said the success of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) also led to the arrest of 58 syndicate members and asset seizures worth RM2.26 million. "Additionally, JSJN recorded an impressive performance, making a total of 10,794 arrests for various drug offences during the same period. They also seized drugs worth RM83.18 million and forfeited assets valued at RM7.49 million," he said in his speech at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters monthly gathering here today. Kumar said the Internal Security and Public Order Department also recorded seizures of illicit cigarettes worth RM48,000 and misappropriated subsidised palm oil worth RM1.11 million. Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department contributed by achieving a 59.64 per cent resolution rate for index crimes during the period. Kumar also said that 54 rape cases involving teenagers were recorded from 2023 until last year. "One of the primary causes is the easy accessibility of pornographic content on social media, the general lack of awareness about Malaysian laws concerning such crimes, and the breakdown of family structures. This situation results in teenagers missing out on attention, affection, and supervision from their parents," he added. To proactively address the issue, the Sexual Investigation Unit has visited schools to deliver talks and raise awareness among students about such crimes. He urged all parties to take these cases seriously, advising parents to express affection, raise their children with strong religious and moral values and stay vigilant about their children's activities and social circles.

Trailer lorry driver gets 8 years' jail, RM80,000 fine over death of family of four
TAIPING: A trailer lorry driver was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined RM80,000 by the High Court here on Wednesday (June 18) after he was found guilty of dangerous driving that caused the deaths of four members of a family in an accident in Sungai Siput five years ago. Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin dismissed the appeal by Y Vethri Vel, 31, and imposed eight years in jail and an RM20,000 fine for each of the amended charges. The sentences are to run concurrently from June 13, with an additional three months' jail if he fails to pay the fine. He is also disqualified from getting a driver's licence for three years from the conviction date, and the details of the conviction must be recorded on his driving licence. The father of two was found guilty on four amended charges under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) for driving recklessly, resulting in the death of Mohamad Faiz Bakhari, 28 and his wife, Nik Iedayu Nik Hassan, 30, the couple's baby Muhammad Faqih Irsyad, 16 months and Nike Iedayu's sister Nik Ifeka Nik Hassan, 27, at Kilometre 37 of the Ipoh-Kuala Kangsar Road at around 10.20pm on Feb 13, 2020. On Dec 14, 2023, the Sungai Siput Magistrate's Court found Vethri Vel guilty under Section 44(1)(b) of the same Act for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, resulting in death. The charges were amended to Section 41 (1) of the Act after the High Court found reasonable doubt regarding the accused's blood sample, as raised by the defence. Vethri Vel, represented by lawyers Ranjit Singh Sandhu and Faazil Rahman, appealed for a good behaviour bond, citing the soft tissue injuries he sustained in the crash. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Waffy Ismail requested the court to deliver a proportionate sentence, stressing that the accused's dangerous driving had resulted in the deaths of four people, leaving behind a three-year-old child who is now an orphan.
