Shopping for a Toyota RAV4? Here's What Experts Say You Should Look At Instead
How popular is the Toyota RAV4? How about the fact that in 2024, it outsold the Ford F-150 pickup truck, 475,193 units to 460,915 units, according to Jato Dynamics? As Ford F-150 sales fell 5%, Toyota RAV4 sales grew 9% last year. Still, just because a vehicle is popular, doesn't mean it's good. Just ask someone who uses Salesforce software or makes coffee using coffee pods. Popularity does not ensure excellence.
So, perhaps you've looked at a Toyota RAV4 and decided that it isn't for you. There has to be something better, right? Well, there is; it just depends what you're looking for. After all, the compact SUV class is among America's most popular, alongside pickup trucks of course.
Given the plethora of compact SUV choices, you might want to look at some key competitors, all of which have far more personality. Here they are, in alphabetical order.
This overlooked, fun-to-drive compact SUV that's the identical cousin to the tonier and more expensive Alfa Romeo Tonale. Opting for the Dodge gets you the same equipment, but with a base price and destination charge anywhere from $5,350-to-$8,015 cheaper before any discounts. Does that get your attention? The Dodge differs from the Alfa Romeo in its hood, front-end clip, side cladding and rear lighting. But its overall shape is a dead-ringer for its Italian cousin.
Base Hornet GTs come equipped with a 268-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces a 0-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds. The upper-level Hornet R/T plug-in hybrid comes with a small 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor on the rear axle that generates 288 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 5.6 seconds, along with 30 miles of all-electric driving, the difference in performance is minimal at best.
The driveline is fairly smooth and you can easily tap its available power. Despite the somewhat light steering, it proves fun to flog through the twisties. And its a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster lend it a modern feel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. That said, its backseat legroom is fairly light and cargo space is less than competitors. But if fun matters to you, this is one to sample.
The smaller of the two Bronco models offered by Ford, the Bronco Sport shares its underpinnings with the Ford Escape and Maverick, but is truer to the original than its bigger brother due to the similar size.
A 181-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine and 8-speed automatic transmission come standard, although a 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder is offered on higher trims. All-wheel drive is standard as are Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, and Sand driving modes. Additional Mud/Ruts and Rock Crawl modes are available on some modes, along with 8.8 inches of ground clearance, giving this Bronco credible off-road chops. Still, it lacks a low range creeper gear or an electronically-detachable sway bar, and you can't remove its roof or doors. But there's enough here for most off-roading.
It quickly climbs a sand-covered hill or delivers the requisite suspension compliance to ensure a comfy ride along our deteriorating arteries. And while its 4x4 nature means you won't be able to indulge your inner Andretti, it pays off as an off-road warrior.
With a simple, square-jawed cleanliness that's emblematic of classic Honda design, the CR-V avoids the overwrought faux off-road attitude of the RAV4. It doesn't pretend to be something that it's not, while embracing its mission as a practical travel host. With two impressively roomy rows and a 36.3-cubic-foot cargo hold, there's more than enough space for everyone and their pile of stuff.
Choose the EX and EX-L CR-V, and you'll find a 190-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood. In contrast, Sport and Sport Touring Hybrid CR-Vs come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two motors that generate 204 horsepower and EPA ratings as high as 40 mpg. Either front-wheel or all-wheel drive is offered.
The CR-V's power is sufficient for its task, while its continuously variable transmission doesn't suffer from the indecisive power delivery typical of the breed. Its steering ratio is perfect, with well controlled body and a comfortable ride that render it modestly athletic, although it's not the track star that the Mazda proves to be. Still, it's more enjoyable to drive than anything that's so practical.
About the same size as a Porsche Macan, the Mazda CX-50 is a longer, wider CX-5 and sports a similar elegant silhouette outside and inside. Chrome accents, soft-touch surfaces, and subtle stitching secrete the indispensable upmarket atmosphere.
The simple, elegant instrument panel features commonly-used buttons, while a knob on the center console control the standard 10.3-inch infotainment display.
There's a choice of two 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines. Base CX-70s get the non-turbo version that generates 187 horsepower. With a turbo, the same unit produces 256 horsepower, or about the same as a base Macan, although it requires using 93 octane fuel. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. The CX-50's steering is quick and accurate. There's some body rebound, but the ride is generally firm. Still, the Off-Road driving mode provides some off-road ability, although it's meant more for light off-road duties. Overall, this is a hoot to drive, one that carries 30 cubic feet of lifestyle debris and can tow 3,500 pounds.
Not everyone wants a firm, sporty driving experience. For them, the Nissan Rogue is an ideal solution, especially in its top trim levels. Its cabin detailing has a chic flamboyance accentuated by semi-aniline leather and quilted stitching, although faux leather is available.
There's also a solid tech package with an 8-inch or 12.3-inch infotainment, depending on the model, a 10.8-inch head-up display, and wireless smartphone charging. Cargo space is 39 cubic feet, expanding to 74 cubic feet with the seats folded.
But its middle-of-the-road status is apparent once you put the car in gear. A 201-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder and continuously variable automatic transmission provide average acceleration, adequate handling, and a very comfortable ride. That's when you'll realize that its agreeable personality contradicts its name.
You don't have to follow the leader when it comes to compact SUVs and buy a Toyota RAV4. We understand that it's a safe choice, but the better choice is the Honda CR-V. Depending on who you are, the Ford, Mazda, or Nissan may be as well. There are plenty of strengths and weaknesses in all of these models, and their particular mix of traits means that one is sure to be your next ride.

A decade ago, choosing to focus on mass or niche markets was one of the key decisions a company would make. It was an 'either/or' choice that would propel a company in a definite direction. But when the era of big data began to dawn, the business landscape changed rapidly. Companies suddenly had the tools to play in both arenas. And as they crunched the numbers, they realized that becoming a 'both/and' company — mass and niche — gave them a greater capacity for growth. 'In today's attention-deficient, culture-whiplash marketplace, you can't just be one thing to one group — at least not if you want to scale,' warns Jared Navarre, founder of Keyni Consulting. 'You've got to be specific enough to mean something, and broad enough to matter.' 'If you're content being niche and boutique, great — build a tight cult and stay weird,' Navarre says, 'but if you're trying to play on a bigger stage, this dual-audience approach becomes essential. Brands that master this duality don't just survive — they take the field swinging, while everyone else is still defending their TAM slide.' Options for building brands that do both In many cases, brands keep both mass and niche market shoppers satisfied by strategically segmenting their product lines. For example, Ford does this by providing the F-150 for the masses while producing the Raptor for those who want to draw a crowd on YouTube. Porsche has a similar approach, with the Cayenne keeping the lights on while the 911 keeps the brand holy. 'A diverse product line, which includes both mass and niche options, democratizes entry while providing an aspirational ceiling,' Navarre explains. 'Nike balances shopping mall shelf ubiquity with niche cultural obsession. Apple sells to the masses but still whispers sweet nothings to filmmakers, musicians, and developers.' Companies also achieve the diversity needed to connect with mass and niche markets by building a cadre of brands aimed at different targets. Toyota, which provides reliability and accessibility to the mass market, uses Lexus to connect with smaller markets seeking a refined and luxurious option. 'VW Group has Volkswagen to get you there, Audi to get you there in style, and Lamborghini to get you there screaming,' Navarre says. The importance of bringing all stories under one narrative The key to succeeding with a 'both/and' strategy is understanding that segmenting does not mean separating. While a company's mass and niche offerings need to connect with unique customer sensibilities, they must still be seen as a part of the same brand narrative. 'Clear brand architecture, in which each tier has purpose, boundaries, and distinct positioning, is critical,' Navarre shares. 'Confusion kills trust, which can cause a brand to lose in all markets. Without discipline and clarity, a brand can be diluted into oblivion.' However, Navarre also says companies must find a way to build their strategy around a single strand of brand DNA. Segment-specific storytelling should make sense within the larger brand narrative. 'The essence should be consistent, even if the price tags aren't,' he advises. 'Your messaging needs to hit differently for each group, but should still feel like it came from the same soul. When messaging gets messy, you build a house of friction where operations, marketing, and product constantly step on each other's toes.' Using brand tension to gain an advantage Clarity can give way to complexity as brands strive to craft a strategy that appeals to both mass and niche markets, which can give rise to brand tension. Although the instinct is to find a way to resolve the tension, that can inadvertently limit a brand's potential for success. According to Navarre, the brands that endure and thrive are often the ones that learn to live in the in-between. 'One of the most overlooked dynamics in building a brand that straddles both niche and mass audiences is the productive tension it creates,' he says. 'When embraced rather than avoided, that tension becomes a long-term competitive advantage.' As they embrace tension, brands build a layered identity, adopting elements that some may see as contradictions. Apple, for example, strives for a level of simplicity that maximizes its accessibility while also providing powerful developer tools that require a professional-level understanding. Rather than seeing the layers as contradictions, savvy companies understand them as a way to create brand depth. 'This kind of brand strategy is harder because it requires more discipline, more nuance, and an internal culture that resists the urge to collapse complexity into something neat,' Navarre says. 'But in a world increasingly flattened by sameness, tension is a signal that invites curiosity, rewards exploration, and keeps a brand interesting long after the product alone would've lost momentum.' Indeed, making a play for both mass and niche markets increases potential, but also increases risks. Brands that make it work are those that avoid confusion, manage tension, and deliver authenticity. Ford Bronco, Bronco Sport missed top safety ratings for this reason
The Ford Bronco and Ford Bronco Sport SUVs failed to meet the marginal ratings to qualify for a top safety pick in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's latest safety ratings, with the institute noting there is a heightened risk for head and neck injuries in the rear seat of the Bronco Sport. On June 10, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety — a nonprofit group owned by auto insurers with the purpose of reducing injuries from car crashes — said it tested nine vehicles and awarded six models from four different brands a 2025 Top Safety Pick+ award. Three of the vehicles tested — the Volkswagen Taos, Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport — did not earn a top safety ranking, rather came as "adequate," due to subpar performance in one or more of the required tests, the institute said in its findings. The crash tests showed both Broncos put rear seat passengers at an elevated risk of chest injuries. The Taos got inadequate results in the front crash test and for its headlights and pedestrian crash avoidance system. A spokesperson from Volkswagen did not immediately respond to inquiries for comment on the results. Ford Motor Co. spokesman Mike Levine emailed the following statement to the Detroit Free Press: "The 2025 Bronco and Bronco Sport meet or exceed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) regulatory requirements. Both Bronco and Bronco Sport have earned overall 5-star NHTSA New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) ratings, and Bronco is currently the only vehicle in its segment to achieve a five-star overall vehicle score in NHTSA's testing." The insurance institute said to qualify for either Top Safety Pick+ or the lower-tier Top Safety Pick award this year, vehicles need good ratings in the small overlap front crash test. That test simulates a crash where a small portion of the front of the vehicle impacts another vehicle or barrier. Also, vehicles must get a good rating in updated side tests, an acceptable or good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation and acceptable or good-rated headlights across all trim levels. The institute said getting an acceptable rating in its updated moderate overlap front test is enough to qualify for Top Safety Pick, but a good rating is required to earn Top Safety Pick+. The moderate overlap test simulates a head-on collision where the vehicle's front overlaps 40% of a stationary vehicle's width at 40 mph. Its purpose is to measure rear-seat occupant protection. The 2025 models that did receive the Top Safety Pick+ ranking were: Hyundai Elantra, Kia K4 and Toyota Prius, all small cars; the Hyundai Sonata midsize car, the Toyota bZ4X electric small SUV, and the Nissan Murano midsize SUV. The institute said for some vehicles the Top Safety Pick+ award applies only to models built after the date when the manufacturer made improvements to rear occupant protection. For example, the award applies to Elantras built after October 2024, Sonatas built after November 2024 and K4s built after January 2025. The bZ4X award is for vehicles built after December 2024, when the headlights on its XLE trim were changed to the current good-rated ones. The insurance institute report said new ratings also are available for the Ford Bronco, Ford Bronco Sport and Volkswagen Taos, but "these models did not earn awards due to inadequate performance in one or more of the required tests." "The Bronco was disqualified from contention because of marginal ratings for its headlights, pedestrian front crash prevention system and moderate overlap crash performance," the institute wrote. "In the moderate overlap test, measurements taken from the rear dummy indicated an elevated risk of chest injuries, though the Bronco performed well by most other metrics." Ford's Bronco Sport also failed the same evaluation, but for different reasons. The institute said during the test, "the rear dummy's lap belt slid up onto the abdomen from the ideal position on the pelvis, which increases the chances of internal injuries. Measurements taken from the rear dummy also indicated an elevated risk of injuries to the chest and head or neck." The Bronco Sport earned the group's "acceptable rating" in the updated side test, primarily because of high injury metrics for the driver's pelvis. The institute said the 2025 Volkswagen Taos earned "only" an acceptable rating in the small overlap front test because the safety cage, which is designed to protect occupants, did not hold up well. It also fell short in the updated moderate overlap front test and earned subpar ratings for its headlights and pedestrian crash avoidance system. "Although Volkswagen added pretensioners and load limiters to the rear seat belts in the Taos in January 2025, chest injury metrics for the rear passenger remained high in the moderate overlap test," the report stated. Stellantis launches redundancy plan at Turin plant
Stellantis has initiated a voluntary redundancy scheme at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, targeting 610 workers as part of a broader workforce adjustment strategy across its Italian operations. The scheme, which has been introduced at other facilities in Italy, is designed to facilitate early retirement and alternative career opportunities for employees, reported Reuters. According to a company spokesperson, the Mirafiori plant will maintain a stable workforce from August to gear up for the production of the new hybrid Fiat 500. The production of the new hybrid model is slated to commence in full swing by November. The voluntary redundancy plan is part of Stellantis' efforts to reduce its workforce by up to 1,600 staff across Italy this year. Workers at Mirafiori can enrol in the programme until the end of July. Luigi Paone from Uilm, one of the unions that consented to the voluntary redundancy plan with Stellantis, stated that the scheme would primarily target workers nearing retirement. The plan 'should serve to pave the way for the hiring of young workers as we approach the production start-up of the hybrid 500," Paone added. In the last two months, Stellantis reached agreements for similar redundancy packages at other assembly plants in Italy, including Melfi and Pomigliano, leading to a total workforce reduction of up to 1,660 workers. The company's staff count in Italy has decreased from 55,000 in early 2021, when Stellantis was formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA, to fewer than 40,000. Reports suggest that Stellantis is also planning to implement up to 200 voluntary redundancies at its Termoli plant in central Italy.
