Seth MacFarlane calls for more 'hope' in TV dramas

Yahoo6 days ago
Seth MacFarlane has called for less "negative" stories on TV. The Family Guy creator explained he signed up for sci-fi comedy drama The Orville because he liked the fact it offers "hope", unlike so many other fictional dramas in the modern age. Speaking on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, he said: 'That's why I did The Orville … because when I was a kid, Hollywood was providing that voice in various forms. "There was a lot of hope, and some of the blame lies right here in this town. The dishes that we are serving up are so dystopian and so pessimistic. 'And yeah, there's a lot to be pessimistic about, but it's so one-sided. There's nothing we're doing that's providing anyone an image of hope.' Seth noted there are far more dystopian projects similar to The Handmaid's Tale than programmes like Star Trek, and he insisted the world "needs" uplifting tales. He said: 'They're certainly giving us a lot of cautionary tales, but where are the blueprints that they once gave us for how to do things correctly? 'It can't all be just, 'Here's what's going to happen to you if you f*** up.' 'You do need, 'Here's what you can achieve if you change your ways and do things right.'' The 51-year-old star believes that the popularity of The Sopranos - which aired from 1999 to 2007 - has convinced Hollywood "it's all about the antihero", and he thinks that needs to change because the industry should inspire people to want to be better. He said: 'That's the only thing really that Hollywood can do that's worthwhile because as we all learned from this election, nobody gives a f*** what celebrities think. 'We can tweet, we can talk. Like, people don't care. They don't care. What we do do well is tell stories. And we're not doing the best job right now of telling those stories in a way that gives people hope.'

This Week's ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Hid a ‘Doctor Who' Easter Egg in Plain Sight

The latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds planted the seeds for what'll eventually become classic Star Trek by giving James Kirk (Paul Wesley) time in the captain's chair. Along the way, it also decided to have a little crossover with Doctor this week's 'The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail,' Kirk and the Farragut crew have to rescue the Enterprise from the tendrils of a power-draining scavenger ship. Throughout the episode, the camera cuts to the wrapped up Enterprise, and each establishing shot features a tiiiiiiny glimpse at the Doctor's TARDIS on tendrils covering the ship's left engine. During the premiere of Ncuti Gatwa's inaugural Who season, the Fifteenth Doctor's companion Ruby compares his transporter technology to Star Trek, which he agrees with and suggests they go check out that universe sometime. Well, it happened here in 'Sehlat,' and after the Enterprise breaks free, the TARDIS has disappeared. For the Who heads who watched Gatwa's two seasons, this little Strange New Worlds cameo can be read one of two ways: either the TARDIS also got trapped in the tendrils and left once it could avoid the explosion that wiped out the scavenger ship, or it survived said explosion thanks to its shields and then left without anyone aware. It sounds like this Doctor would've let the scavenger crew perish, since they've been stealing power from ships and killing the crews within for centuries. During 2024's San Diego Comic-Con, then-Who showrunner Russell T. Davies and Star Trek architect Alex Kurtzman did a panel together, where Davies mentioned he'd love to do a Trek episode featuring the Borg. This probably won't lead to such a crossover, but when it does happen, this can be a fun mention made by the Doctor for audience members in the know. Want more io9 news? Taylor Swift Did This When Her Celebrity Friend Lost Her Pet Snake in Her House

Zoe Kravitz has shared a surprising story about her time as an unexpected houseguest at 's home during the Los Angeles wildfires. Speaking on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers,' the actor revealed that she, her mother, and her mother's pet snake stayed with Swift for two weeks. What began as a safe refuge in the singer's beautiful home turned chaotic when the snake escaped into the bathroom, leading to a frantic rescue effort and some unplanned damage to Swift's property. Zoe Kravitz says Taylor Swift was kind about her pet snake losing its way Speaking to show host Seth Meyers, Zoe Kravitz explained that the incident happened on her final day. While she was packing to leave for work, her mother remained upstairs. She then received a phone call from her mom. It was unusual because they were in the same house. 'Your voice is super high,' Kravitz remembered telling her mother. She then recalled how her mother admitted she was 'in a little bit of a pickle.' When the actor reached upstairs, she saw that her mother was inside the bathroom, crouched in a corner, clutching the snake's tail. Orpheus, which is the name of the snake, had discovered 'a little hole in the corner' beside a built-in banquette. The gap was barely visible, yet large enough for the snake to slip inside. 'Snake tails are all muscle,' Kravitz noted. 'They're very strong.' It was getting increasingly difficult for her mom to hold him. The situation escalated quickly. As the snake kept going deeper, Kravitz — all panicky — removed the drawers from the banquette. She wanted to check if they could locate him behind them. She said that the moment felt a lot like a scene from 'Jurassic Park,' describing the sense of losing ground with each passing second. Her assistant Caroline arrived but couldn't help. Swift's house manager stepped in, grabbing a crowbar to dismantle part of the structure. 'We were ripping up the tile, scratching the walls,' she recalled. Faced with either leaving the snake in the house or damaging the bathroom, 'The Batman' actor chose the latter. In the end, the bathroom was destroyed, but they managed to save Orpheus. Later, Kravitz, with a 'very high voice,' nervously called Swift to confess and said, 'Hey, I just wanted to talk to you about something.' Before she could even explain, Swift replied, 'Is it the fact that you almost lost a snake in our house and destroyed my bathroom?' Orpheus is currently safe and sound. Meyers and Kravitz ended the story with a joke, suggesting Swift's next album is titled 'Orpheus, obviously,' and how the snake will get 'like three songs.' 'Oh, Shoot, That's My Brother': Sophie Turner Didn't Hold Back While Explaining Just How Uncomfortable She And Kit Harington Were Playing Lovers

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. I'm so thrilled that Sophie Turner and Kit Harington are reuniting for an upcoming horror movie. However, I can't quite get over the fact that the Game of Thrones cast members are going to be playing lovers. It turns out, they hilariously couldn't either, as the Sansa Stark actress recalled just how uncomfortable she and the Jon Snow actor were filming their intimate scenes together. Sophie Turner spent the better part of her time on Late Night with Seth Meyers discussing various uncomfortable filming situations she's been in. While promoting her project on the 2025 movie schedule, Trust, she talked about working with rats and cockroaches. However, she also got real about the weirdness of making out with your former on-screen brother. Here's how her story about how this ended up happening in the first place began: I just got the script for an amazing gothic horror called The Dreadful. And I was reading through all the characters, and I'm producing it. So, the director was asking me 'Who do you think?' And immediately the first person I thought of was Kit. Well, that's really sweet. I love that the first person she wanted to work with was a fellow Stark, because any Game of Thrones reunion is a good one. However, things got weird when Turner and Harington realized that their relationship in this new movie would be totally different than the one they had on the HBO show. Explaining that realization, Turner said: And so I sent the script to Kit, and he kind of sent me a message back like 'Yeah, I'd love to, but this is going to be really fucking weird, Soph.' And I was like, 'What is he talking about?' And then I was reading it, and I'm like kiss, kiss, sex, kiss, sex, and I'm like 'Oh, shoot, that's my brother.' Listen, I realize that in the Game of Thrones universe, being in a romantic relationship with your brother or niece is not necessarily unusual. However, it's also never not weird. Plus, the Stark siblings – i.e., Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, Rickon and Jon – never participated in the incest. Plus, with GOT being one of HBO's shows that got the world talking, it's admittedly hard to separate the actors from their characters. So, all that considered, yeah, it's weird that Sansa and Jon's actors are playing lovers. I love that they found it odd, too. In fact, it was so weird for them, Turner claimed that they were both 'retching' when they had to lock lips on set: But it's such a good script that he was like, 'We kind of have to do it.' So, then we put it out of our minds. And then we get on set, and it's the first kissing scene, and we are both retching. Like, really, it is vile. It was the worst. Another really bad moment in my career. On top of this, earlier in the interview, she spoke about how 'foul' it was to work with cockroaches and rats on the same day for a different movie. She called that the 'worst day of my career.' However, a few minutes later, when they talked about The Dreadful, and Meyers asked if playing lovers with her GOT co-star was worse than the cockroaches, the actress said: Yeah. It was. HBO Max: Plans start from $9.99 a monthThe With Ads plan for HBO Max starts at $9.99 with three other tiers available. With this subscription, you can stream classics like Game of Thrones, The Sopranos and so much more. View Deal As someone who binged Game of Thrones with an HBO Max subscription, I will also have a hard time moving past this like they did. However, also like them, I'm going to do it. The fact that Turner and Harington were willing to work through the weirdness of playing lovers after playing siblings for years tells me that they're committed to this movie. So, you better believe I'm going to go see it. If they have confidence in it, I'll be thrilled to watch it, even if it means I have to work really, really hard to get over the fact that they played iconic siblings on Game of Thrones.
