Liverpool FC News: Underrated star SHINES as new animal unleashed

Liverpool have so many great players that it's easy for fans to underrate them.
When the Reds lost on penalties to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield, that's exactly what happened with one of Arne Slot's main forwards. The abuse he got online was horrific to be honest.

But as with most things, time is a great healer and on Friday night in Liverpool's Premier League opener against Bournemouth, all was forgiven after a moment of brilliance in the second half.

At long last, it feels right to only give the player his due credit. Cody Gakpo is a serious player. unleashed
Gakpo - A winger unleashed
Liverpool had an interesting dynamic at left-wing last season, as Gakpo had to share the position with Luis Diaz, even though the Colombian occasionally played as a centre-forward as well.
Nothing was how it should have been. Gakpo had times where he could shine, but in certain games, he'd be left on the bench to be brought on as a game-changer or shoehorned in as a striker.
To Diaz's credit, he could play the more central role. It didn't work all the time, but the match against Leverkusen in the Champions League where he scored a hat-trick. It was an imperious performance.
But now that the 28-year-old has moved to Bayern Munich, we're now in a situation where Gakpo will finally get his chance to be the main man on that left-hand side. In some people's minds, competition for places makes players better, but in my view, Gakpo deserves to trusted full-time.
Of course, Rio Ngumoha is now part of the first-team and the 16-year-old will be itching to make his mark on the side, despite his age and inexperience, but Gakpo will get most of the minutes.
Against Bournemouth, the Dutchman was at his best - running down the channel relentlessly, taking on players, cutting in and cutting out and winning countless duels to be a difference-maker in attack.
His goal in the 49th minute was quintessentially Gakpo, dribbling in from the left into the centre at the edge of the box before getting a shot away at goal, except this time, he placed it into the corner.
The fans are always going to be the players harshest critics, for better or for worse. His performance at the Community Shield wasn't great, let's not rewrite history. But no one really had their best game.
Right now, Gakpo is one of three senior forwards that Arne Slot has available and we need to back him whenever he plays for us, as we should with each of the players. The 26-year-old is a real talent and he's creeping into the territory of becoming underrated. Deep down, each of us knows that he's an unbelievable talent. Hopefully he finally get a chance to play a bit more in the limelight this season.

Leeds United continued discussions with Noah Okafor over the weekend, talks expected to continue this week

Leeds United opened talks with AC Milan attacker Noah Okafor last week and discussions continued between both parties over the weekend, according to journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs. Leeds want one more attacking addition as manager Daniel Farke looks to keep the Elland Road club up following promotion. The Switzerland international is a serious transfer target for the Whites, and talks are expected to continue between Leeds and his camp this week. They have yet to reach an agreement with Milan, but that is unlikely to be an issue as Okafor is not in their plans. The 25-year-old Leeds target spent the second half of last season on loan with Napoli, winning the Serie A title with them. An option of a permanent transfer was included in the deal but Napoli opted against activating it as manager Antonio Conte played him just four times. The Whites are now looking to bring him to the Premier League as they prepare for life back in the top-flight, and it appears he is open to the move. Okafor has nothing else to prove in the Italian top-flight having won the title after two seasons, and moving to England has always appealed to plenty of professional footballers. He will fancy his chances of playing regularly at Leeds given his versatility, quality and experience. Farke is convinced that the Swiss has what it takes to improve his attack. The West Yorkshire club kicks off their campaign tonight when they host Everton in their opening Premier League game of 2025-26, and they will be desperate to begin the season with a win. Leeds have bolstered their attack with the additions of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha so far this summer. They need more quality options in the final third to boost their survival chances, and signing Okafor will come in handy.

Lorient make enquiry for Leeds' Illan Meslier

Illan Meslier (25), after a difficult past two seasons, has lost his starting place in goal at Leeds United. The Frenchman was part of the side that earned promotion back to the Premier League last season, however, his season between the sticks was marked – once again – by some high-profile errors. As a result, Leeds sought out a replacement for Meslier this season and signed Lucas Perri from Olympique Lyonnais. As Leeds get their Premier League campaign underway against Everton on Monday, there is no doubt that it will be the Brazilian who wears the No.1 jersey. Demoted, Meslier could leave the Yorkshire club. He could make a return to his boyhood club, FC Lorient, understands. Les Merlus, back in Ligue 1, have made an enquiry to bring their academy product back to the club. The former France U21 international left back in 2020 and has since gone on to play 214 matches for Leeds. But he may have played his last. GFFN | Luke Entwistle
