Claire's France: The search for buyers is underway

Fashion Network5 days ago
In France, the Claire's discount chain is also looking for a new owner: placed in receivership by the Paris Commercial Court on July 24, the French subsidiary of the American accessories retailer is now the subject of an invitation to tender to attract buyers. Its parent company wishes to withdraw from the business, which is struggling worldwide.
According to the published document, Claire's France is home to exactly 239 stores in France, which employs 1,323 people (987 full-time equivalent positions).
Potential takeover candidates have time to prepare their bids: the deadline for submitting bids to the bodies involved in the procedure is September 19.
Claire's financial data is not so catastrophic. While sales have indeed fallen in one year, from 142 to 132 million euros between the 2022/23 and 2023/24 financial years (-7%), the projection for the current year (2024/25) is 166 million euros. Moreover, the company's net income is still positive, and has even risen from 800,000 to 1.3 million euros in 2023/24. Net income for 2024/25 is projected at 300,000 euros.
The document drawn up by the court-appointed administrators, Thevenot Partners and Solve, also states that the value of Claire's product stock at the end of June was valued at 9.5 million euros.
Who would be strong enough to acquire these assets, including a large number of stores and as many jobs? Recently, the bankruptcies that have led to takeovers have involved only a handful of outlets and a minority share of jobs, as in the Naf Naf (nearly 340 jobs threatened out of 600) and Jennyfer (a third of jobs maintained) cases.

Lyft and Baidu to launch robotaxis in Europe next year

American rideshare company Lyft said it is partnering with Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) firm Baidu to bring robotaxis to Europe next year. The partnership will see Baidu's sixth-generation Apollo Go autonomous vehicles (AVs) available for rides on the Lyft app in Germany and the United Kingdom 'pending regulatory approval,' Lyft said Monday in a press release. Baidu plans to scale up its fleet to 'thousands of vehicles' throughout Europe in the coming years, it said in a post on the social media platform X. The announcement comes days after Lyft announced it had acquired the taxi app FREENOW from BMW and Mercedes Benz for approximately $200 million (€172.8 million), expanding its operations to 180 cities across nine countries in Europe. Lyft, which has had very little presence in Europe so far, said it will prioritise Germany and the UK due in part to FREENOW's existing presence in these countries as well as their 'deep relationships with local regulators and taxi operators'. For Baidu, it's the latest in a series of partnerships to expand its reach outside China. Last month, Baidu partnered with Uber to bring its autonomous cars to markets outside of the United States and China, focusing specifically on the Middle East in cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi as well as Asia. 'Buckle up! Your driverless ride is on its way,' Baidu said Monday.

Kering in talks with Qatar for sale of Milan building, Corriere says

Gucci -owner Kering is in talks with a member of the Qatari royal family for the sale of a building in Milan's top shopping avenue, Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday. The deal could help the French luxury group cut its debt, which ballooned to more than 10 billion euros (11.58 billion dollars) in 2024, following a series of expensive acquisitions. Among them was the 18th century property in Via Montenapoleone, which the French group bought from Blackstone for 1.3 billion euros in April last year. Corriere said Kering was looking at selling a majority stake in the company through which it owns the building, based on a "similar valuation". It added that the buyer would be a vehicle linked to former Qatari Prime Minister and real estate billionaire Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani. Kering declined to comment on the report. It was not immediately possible to contact Al-Thani for a comment. In April, when Corriere first reported about a possible Qatari-Kering deal for the Via Montenapoleone property, the Qatar Investment Authority denied it had any interest. Kering, which appointed former Renault CEO Luca de Meo to lead the group from September, is under pressure to trim debt and revive declining sales, particularly at its top brand Gucci.

‘He likes Swiss watches!': Trump shocks horology with tariffs

The Trump administration jolted Switzerland with punitive new tariffs. Few seemed to be more taken aback than buyers and sellers of Swiss watches. Oliver R. Müller, a luxury watch consultant based in Switzerland, was indignant at the blow that tariffs will likely inflict on the country's watch industry, which has recently been relying on demand from the US to offset fading sales in China. 'It's another burden that comes on top of many others,' Müller said in an interview. The administration's 39% tariff on all Swiss imports, if passed along from sought-after brands like Rolex, Patek Philippe and Omega to distributors in the US, would likely lead to retail-price increases of 12% to 14%, Müller estimated. That would add about 1,000 dollars to the 9,500 dollar price of a stainless steel Rolex Submariner. Swiss watches are a longstanding signal of affluence, and over the years the president has been seen wearing various high-end timepieces, including a Rolex. Members of his family and his administration have also sported Swiss watches in public. For observers, that made the 39% levy all the more vexing. 'On top of it all, he likes Swiss watches!' Müller said. High-end watches have been drawing a growing American fan base in recent years, with obsessive owners showing off their collections on social media. The chain retailer Watches of Switzerland, which has locations in tony shopping areas across the US, said in a statement that it would 'continue to work closely with our brand partners to mitigate any potential impact.' Trump administration officials didn't seem to be focused on watches when they put the tariffs in place, instead citing pharmaceuticals as a driving force in the trade imbalance between the countries. The US has no large luxury-watch making industry of its own. Online watch enthusiasts have long clocked the make and reference numbers of the high-end watches of Trump officials. FBI Director Kash Patel has been spotted wearing a Breitling. Former DOGE czar Elon Musk has a TAG Heuer with the SpaceX logo. Secretary of State Marco Rubio- who in a previous political life declared that Trump, had he not inherited a fortune from his father, would be 'selling watches in Manhattan'- has worn a Rolex, too. There were already warning signs in the Swiss watch industry before Trump's tariffs. Exports fell 5.6% in June compared with a year earlier, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, a trade group. That was driven by 'significant declines' in sales in the US, as well as Japan and Hong Kong, the group said in a monthly report. Trump lent his name and signature to a line of MAGA-coded timepieces last year, including a 100,000 dollar 'Swiss-made' Tourbillon. The makers of the watch, a firm registered as TheBestWatchesonEarth LLC, didn't respond to a request for comment sent through an intermediary. The site states that the watches 'are not political and have nothing to do with any political campaign.'
