NDTV3 days ago
Kolkata:
Just hours after the Delhi Police issued a statement calling a video shared by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee "baseless and fabricated", the Trinamool Congress brought the migrant family seen in the video to the party office in Kolkata from Delhi to counter the Delhi Police directly.
Seated between Trinamool MP Mausam Noor, MP Samirul Islam, Minister Firhad Hakim and leader Kunal Ghosh, the family from Malda who have been residing in New Delhi for over 25 years now levelled allegations against the Delhi Police of harassment, threat, torture and seeking ransom.
"Four people in plain clothes came to my house and asked for my Aadhaar and asked where my husband was. I was called Bangladeshi, taken to Mangalam Hospital and slapped, they asked me to say Jai Sri Ram and kicked me in my stomach. They demanded Rs 25,000 and then next day the police picked us up and tortured us and made us sign many papers," said Sajnur Parveen, the woman seen in the CCTV shared by Mamata Banerjee.
On July 27, the Chief Minister of West Bengal claimed "linguistic terror" being unleashed on Bengali Migrants in Delhi.

A day later, DCP East Abhishek Dhania said the police conducted an enquiry and after examining CCTV footage and interrogating the Malda family, they had told the police, that their relative with political links had asked them to record this video and share it with local media.

"During the interrogation, she mentioned that her relative, who lives in the Malda district of West Bengal, is a political worker, and on his request, she made this baseless video and shared it with him. Later, he circulated the video in the local media... After a thorough investigation and inquiry, we have concluded that the entire video is baseless and fabricated. This video has been deliberately circulated on social media to tarnish the image of the Delhi Police," said DCP Dhania.
The BJP in the meantime have filed a complaint against the West Bengal Chief Minister with Delhi Police Crime Branch for sharing a "fake and communally provocative" video seeking an FIR against her. BJP MP Soumendu Adhikari submitted his complaint on 29th July. The Trinamool Congress has said they will file a FIR against Delhi Police in Kolkata urging the Kolkata Police to investigate the allegations made by the Malda family against Delhi Police.
"We will rehabilitate the family, provide fresh documents that have been seized by the police, even their mobile phones that were taken away. We will ensure they go back to Malda safely," added minister Firhad Hakim.

Kharge criticises ECI, says poor and minorities ‘deliberately' excluded in SIR

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI), calling the draft voters' list released during the special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral roll a 'deliberate' move to disenfranchise the poor, marginalised and minorities. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was speaking at the Annual Legal Conclave organised by the Congress in New Delhi. (PTI photo) Speaking at the Annual Legal Conclave organised by the Congress in New Delhi, Kharge said, 'If 6.5 to 10 million voters are being excluded in a state of 70 million, it's not an error, it's a calculated decision to remove the marginalised from the democratic process.' Kharge asserted that accountability will follow for those in the poll body. 'Whether they are serving or retired, ECI officials won't be spared if they break the rules. They're in a dangerous position – lying for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – and that cannot go on unchecked', he said. Referring to the Supreme Court's directive allowing Aadhaar, Voter ID or ration card for voter verification in the SIR process, Kharge claimed the ECI ignored it deliberately. 'They knew that if more people were allowed to enrol, the votes would go to Congress,' he said. 'Microphones are switched off the moment we try to speak,' he said. Kharge also spoke on the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar claiming that the BJP ousted him when he showed signs of independence. 'The moment he accepted the motion to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma, they saw him as a threat. They pressured him to withdraw or resign', he said. The 2003 Bihar SIR data was published days before the ECI launched the fresh exercise to revise the electoral roll on June 28 as a reference point for the submission of identification documents. Nearly 60% of the total electorate were not required to submit any documents. They had to verify their details and submit enumeration forms.

PM Modi launches ₹2,200 crore projects in his constituency Varanasi, says ‘Anti-development govts mislead...'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi on Saturday, August 2, and launched multiple development projects worth around ₹ 2,200 crore. While addressing the public, he accused SP and Congress governments of spreading rumours and misleading people. As he launched the 20th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme he said, 'Our government is working tirelessly for the welfare of farmers. The earlier governments did not even fulfil one scheme they had promised. BJP government delivers what it promises. PM Kisan Samman Nidhi has become an example of the strong will and intentions of the government.' With plans to benefit over 9.7 crore farmers across the country, the scheme aims to offer direct financial assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Charging at the opposition, he said, 'The anti-development governments like SP and Congress would spread rumours and mislead people in all ways possible.' According to PIB's press release dated August 1, ₹ 3.69 lakh crore has been transferred to farmers' accounts through 19 instalments since the scheme's launch in 2019. "This is very unfortunate for the country that a hopeless opposition is living with these false hopes. All they can do is lie to the farmers and mislead them... PM Kisan Samman Nidhi has been ongoing without a break since its inception. So far, ₹ 3.75 lakh crore have been credited into he accounts of beneficiary farmers... Farmers of Kashi alone have received ₹ 900 crores," DD News quoted the Prime Minister as saying. The development projects aim to nurture and boost infrastructure, education, healthcare, tourism, urban development and cultural heritage sectors. The prime focus of the allocated funds would be to 'preserve culturally significant water bodies,' progressive work on 'water purification and maintenance works at various kunds including Ramkund, Mandakini, Shankuldhara and others.' Striving to achieve holistic urban transformation with improved road connectivity and power infrastructure, significant investment will be made on 'widening and strengthening of the Varanasi - Bhadohi road and Chhitauni- Shool Tankeshwar road; and Railway Overbridge at Hardattpur.' Educational projects in focus include upgradation of 53 school buildings within the municipal boundary, the construction of a new district library and the rejuvenation of Government High Schools at Jakhini and Lalpur, among others. From inaugurating Animal Birth Control Centre and an associated Dog Care Centre, PM Modi facilitated inauguration of advanced medical equipment installations, including robotic surgery and CT scan facilities.

Congress, CPI(M) leaders slam the national award for Kerala Story

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress have condemned the national award for Kerala Story, an allegedly Islamophobic movie, which purportedly broadcasts a negative depiction of Kerala as a fertile ground for radical Islamists to trick Hindu women into marriage for recruitment to the jihadist cause. Culture Minister Saji Cherian termed the award the latest salvo in the socio-economic and cultural war the Sangh Parivar-backed Central Government has unleashed against secular and progressive Kerala. 'The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre has strangulated Kerala financially. It has unleashed Governors to scuttle the autonomy of State-funded varsities to saffronise Kerala's secular and progressive higher education system. Now the BJP has subverted the national film awards to malign Kerala,' he said. Malayalam cinema wins four honours at National Film Awards; Urvashi and Vijayaraghavan get best supporting actor awards Mr. Cherian said the BJP-ruled States gave tax breaks to the movie, which he stated claimed malevolently that thousands of Hindu women in Kerala fell prey to 'Love Jihad.' He said the Sangh Parivar had injected the phrase into Hindu majoritarian rhetoric to falsely accuse Muslim youth of tricking Hindu women into marriage for conversion to Islam and subsequent radicalisation to fill the ranks of Islamist fighters in Syria and Yemen. Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal said forced conversion conspiracy theories propagated by the armada of Hindu rightwing groups have caused an uptick in attacks on minorities in BJP-ruled States. 'We saw in Chhattisgarh how the Bajrang Dal lynch mob ambushed two Kerala nuns on the false charge of spiriting out tribal women to Agra for conversion to Christianity. The BJP government in the State played second fiddle to the conspiracists. It arrested and incarcerated the nuns on charges of human trafficking,' Mr. Balagopal said. Excise Minister M.B. Rajesh stated that the BJP had perverted the national film awards to demonise Kerala. He said the BJP had repeatedly leaned on the ill-made movie's false and malicious narrative to sow communal divisions in the State. All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary (Organisation), K.C. Venugopal, MP, said the movie's distorted messaging has helped Hindu rightwing groups to whip up hate against minorities in BJP-ruled States and sow communal divisions in Kerala. 'The national award for the xenophobic movie is the BJP's payback to secular Kerala for shutting the door on the Sangh Parivar,' he said.
