Russell's Reserve Has Brought Back Its Fan-Favorite 13-Year-Old Bourbon—and It's the Strongest One Yet
Russell's Reserve, a whiskey brand produced at Kentucky's Wild Turkey Distillery, is known for its affordable, high-quality range of bourbons and rye whiskeys. The core bourbon expression carries a 10-year-old age statement and can usually be found for around $50 per bottle, an indisputable bargain in a world of whiskey inflation. In 2021, the brand launched a 13-year-old version, and though it was just a few years older it immediately skyrocketed in price on the secondary market. Well, that bourbon is back, but this time it's bottled at a much higher barrel proof than previous releases.
According to the brand, previous releases of Russell's Reserve 13 were 'batched' at a barrel proof of 114.8—in other words, that is the barrel proof of a bunch of barrels that were blended together. This year's release is nearly ten proof points higher, clocking in at 123.8 proof—the highest to date—which puts it more in the range of Booker's or Elijah Craig Barrel Proof. The whiskey's higher ABV is based on the location of the barrels that master distiller Eddie Russell and his team selected for this new release. Certain parts of each rickhouse are hotter or dryer than others, which leads to higher rates of evaporation yielding barrels with more alcohol and less water inside—especially after 13 years.

'This release of Russell's Reserve 13 Year Old is special to me not only because it celebrates our legacy, but because it represents a new chapter in the evolution of this bourbon,' said Russell in a statement. 'This one carries the signature profile the 13 is known for, but with enhanced cola notes that bring a new depth of flavor. I'm excited to share this new iteration with our fans because I think they're going to love drinking it as much as I enjoyed making it.' We were not able to sample this new bourbon yet, but the official tasting notes detail aromas of vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, baking spice, and 'the distillery's signature dusty funk' on the nose. That's followed by cola, molasses, dark fruit, fruit cobbler, and butter cream on the palate, with mature oak, char, deep oak spice, and a hint of black pepper on the finish.
This release comes after last year's Russell's Reserve 15 Year Old, an amazing bourbon that the distillery said is a one-off (it topped our 50 Greatest Bourbons list). Russell's 13, however, is an ongoing release, but no word if the proof will stay at this level or if it might change again in the future. Russell's Reserve 13 Year Old will be available starting later this summer (SRP $200, hopefully you can find it for close to that) at select retailers and at the Wild Turkey visitor's center. Stella's Grocery is opening in the Museum District. Basically.
Stella's Grocery has taken over the cafe inside the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, the museum announced Monday. Why it matters: The collaboration brings many of the offerings from the beloved neighborhood market to the Museum District, and just a block outside of the Fan. State of play: The Commonwealth Cafe, as it's dubbed, is now open inside the VMHC and serving up Stella's Grocery staples (hello, Greek salads and hummus), alongside a coffee bar. Plus, inside the cafe, there's a "tribute to the late Stella Dikos," the foodie matriarch of the Giavos family's restaurants, which include Sidewalk Cafe, Kuba Kuba, The Continental and, of course, Stella's. The tribute includes some of Stella's "cherished objects, including her handwritten recipe card and her mortar and pestle," Constantine Giavos, her grandson and the family business' creative director, wrote on Instagram. On the menu: Grab-and-go prepared food, including salads, sandwiches, soup and dessert, wine and beer, plus Baltik's Bagels, Flour Garden Bakery items and Nightingale ice cream sandwiches. The cafe is open daily, 10am-5pm. What's next: Stella's story, her journey from a young bride in Greece to becoming the matriarch of Richmond restaurant royalty, will be included in VMHC's next big exhibition in honor of America's 250th anniversary, "We The People."

Mike Lynch's Sailing Yacht Has Been Recovered One Year After It Sank
Mike Lynch's ill-fated sailing yacht is finally out of the water. The 184-foot Bayesian—which capsized off the coast of Sicily last August, killing the British tech mogul and six others—was pulled from the ocean on Saturday, according to the Associated Press. Salvage recovery crews in Italy slowly raised the sloop from the seabed over three days using one of Europe's most powerful floating sea cranes. The yacht was transported from the fishing village of Porticello to the town of Termini Imerese on Sunday, according to The Guardian. It will be stored in a specially manufactured steel cradle so that British and Italian investigators can examine it as part of an inquiry into the cause of the sinking. Lynch and Bacares took their 18-year-old daughter and a group of friends to Sicily on the yacht last August. It is believed they were celebrating Lynch's recent acquittal: He had just been cleared of fraud charges relating to the purchase of his company Autonomy by Hewlett-Packard in 2011. That celebration ended in tragedy. Bayesian was struck by a severe thunderstorm on August 19. The yacht, which was anchored just offshore near the port of Porticello, was hit by violent 80 mph winds that caused it to flood within seconds, according to the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB). A total of 22 people were on board; Lynch, his daughter, and five others died. Chairman of Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer and attorney Chris Morvillo were among those killed when the vessel sank, with a search and rescue mission later recovering the bodies of the seven people. Fifteen others—including nine crew members and six guests—scrambled into a life raft as the yacht began to capsize. Bacares was among those who were rescued. Investigators are hoping that the salvaged yacht will help them determine the cause of the sinking. They will now carry out a forensic examination to work out whether one of the hatches remained open and whether the keel was improperly raised. A number of experts have speculated that water entering through the top via open hatches could have caused the sinking. Italian prosecutors have opened an inquiry into suspected manslaughter and culpable shipwreck. Captain James Cutfield, engineer Tim Parker Eaton, and sailor Matthew Griffith have been placed under investigation, according to The Guardian. This does not imply guilt or mean that formal charges will necessarily follow.
