‘I Didn't Decide To Be Born Brown': Indian Man Targeted By Teens In Ireland

News1818 hours ago
A 22-year-old Indian man shared on Reddit about facing racial harassment at a bus stop in Ireland. Teenagers in a car used racist slurs at him.
An Indian man claimed on Reddit about being a victim of racial harassment at a bus stop in Ireland. The 22-year-old man shared his ordeal on Reddit and stating that a group of teenagers teased him with racist slurs.
'I'm an Indian male, 22. After I left work and while waiting for the bus, a group of young teenagers in a car called me over. I naturally thought they were asking for directions or something. I went up to the car, and they called me 'hey sweet cheeks." I played along, matched their energy, and said thanks, really appreciated it," the user wrote in the r/IndiansinIreland subreddit.
'Finally, for the third time, they came up from the other side and shouted more racist slurs. They drove off, and when I was boarding the bus, those lads were still there, probably waiting for their next victim who'd give them the reaction they wanted, which I believe I didn't," the post adds further.
'I try to be stoic about things and not let them get to me, but I didn't decide to be born brown. There were two Irish people at the stop with me and another brown guy I don't know, and nobody spoke up. We are on our own when push comes to shove. Stay strong, people," Indian man concluded the post.
This is to be noted that no video or photo of the incident was shared and the information is based on the claims made by the Indian man on Reddit.
Amid incidents of harassment against Indians in Ireland, Irish President Michael D Higgins on Tuesday 'unequivocally" condemned the 'despicable attacks" against the community. The statement came after a spate of violent attacks on Indians in Dublin and other cities, which the Irish police (Garda) said was 'being fully and thoroughly investigated".
'The recent despicable attacks on members of the Indian community stand in stark contradiction to the values that we as a people hold dear," said Higgins.
'That any person in Ireland, particularly any young person, should be drawn into such behaviour through manipulation or provocation is to be unequivocally condemned," he added.

Ambergris worth more than ₹5 crores seized at Dapoli

Mumbai: The Dapoli customs division seized a little over 4kg of ambergris worth over ₹5 crore from Goa fort near Harnai beach at Ratnagiri's Dapoli village on August 12. Ambergris, also known as 'whale vomit' is a solid, waxy substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales, highly valued in the perfume industry as a fragrance enhancer. Ambergris trade is prohibited since the material is classified as a schedule I animal article under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, making this a rare and high value seizure by the Dapoli customs division. The Dapoli customs division seized a little over 4kg of ambergris worth over ₹ 5 crore from Goa fort near Harnai beach at Ratnagiri's Dapoli village on August 12. (HT) Following a tip off, officers of the customs department rushed to the Goa fort near Harnai beach where they found a viscous jelly like substance suspected to be ambergris. The material, highly sought after in the international market, was seized and samples of it were sent for chemical analysis. It was then handed over to the wildlife department. According to scientists, when whales, a species vulnerable to extinction according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, ingest indigestible materials like squid beaks, ambergris forms within their system as a protective way to expel these objects. After being expelled, the ambergris drifts across the ocean. Only two or three incidents of free-floating ambergris have been reported in the past five years across Indian coasts. 'There have been no sightings (of sperm whales) for quite a while on the Maharashtra coast,' said Mahi Manakeshwar, marine biologist at Coastal Conservation Foundation, who works with deep sea animals such as the sperm whale. He said that Sperm whales were deep sea creatures and ambergris, expelled far out at sea, reaches the coast depending on the currents. 'Fishermen know what ambergris looks like and usually report their findings,' Manakeshwar added.

Sensitisation drive after dad, son face language harassment at Noida hotel

1 2 Kolkata: The Indian multinational hospitality chain of leased and franchised hotels, passed on an internal message to all hotels under its platform to not discriminate against any guest on the basis of caste, creed, religion, language, or nationality. The internal message was circulated a day after TOI reported how a techie from New Town, along with his 14-year-old son — a national-level skater — in Noida for a skating championship, was allegedly denied hotel stay, which he booked through OYO, in Sector 44 after being mistaken for Bangladeshis. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee also reacted to the issue on Thursday, asking why BJP-ruled states were not respecting the Bengali language. "I got to know about an incident that a techie was not allowed to stay in a hotel in Noida with his son simply because he spoke in Bengali. If I respect your language, why will you not respect mine?" she said at a govt programme commemorating the 12th anniversary of the Kanyashree social welfare scheme. The family shifted to another hotel in Sector 49 while OYO apologised to the guest. Noida Police also denied issuing any such directives, stating only ID checks for Bangladeshi nationals with valid documents are required. "The moment we saw the video, we started an enquiry. We have asked the owner of the hotel Meera Eternity to give us proof of which police officer may have asked them to deny guests on the basis of the language or address. We believe the hotel already resold the room to some other guest and thus made up the story, taking advantage of the current language row. We have already taken strict action against them, and following the enquiry, we may de-roster the hotel permanently from our platform," said a senior official. "OYO does not promote any form of discrimination based on race, religion, language, region, or ethnicity. Such behaviour is a clear violation of our policies, the law, and the values we uphold. OYO remains committed to ensuring safe, respectful, and inclusive stays, and any partner found engaging in discriminatory practices faces strict action, including permanent removal from our network," OYO said in a statement. The incident comes amidst a political storm that erupted since the start of the month following a letter — allegedly from the Delhi Police Lodhi Colony station — requesting a translator for the "Bangladeshi language," igniting outrage across India, especially in Bengali-speaking regions. "I am glad the company has addressed the issue and hope no one else faces harassment and humiliation like I faced," said the software engineer. India's 7th rank in US scheme for children sparks fraud concerns

Ahmedabad: India is the seventh-largest source country in the US Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) programme, according to a US govt report on fraud and security risks published on July 23. Originally designed to protect abused or abandoned children, the programme has grown into a pathway increasingly used by older applicants. It is also the only non-western hemisphere country in the top 10, with most applicants concentrated in New York and California. The findings show that 82% of Indian SIJ petitioners were aged 18 or older and 90% were male, underscoring concerns about possible misuse of a scheme originally intended for abused or neglected children. The report titled "Criminality, gangs and program integrity concerns in special immigrant juvenile petition" was issued by US Citizenship and Immigration Services. The Fraud Detection and National Security Directorate of USCIS analysed SIJ petitions filed from 2014 to 2024 and flagged serious vulnerabilities. Nearly 1,98,500 petitions were approved between 2020 and 2024, with more than half filed by those aged between 18 and 21. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Over 500 suspected MS-13 gang members and at least 200 sex offenders gained SIJ approvals. Identity and age fraud were found to be widespread, while a small but concerning number of applicants had links to extremist groups. In the country ranking, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras dominated, reflecting Central American migration flows. But India stood at the seventh place, ahead of Afghanistan and Venezuela. This makes India unique as the only non-western hemisphere country in the top tier of SIJ petitions. The demographic profile of Indian applicants adds to concerns — 82% were 18 or older when they applied, and nine out of 10 were male. Most listed US addresses in New York (57%) or California (20%), two states with large immigrant populations and courts that often process SIJ cases. Analysts say this pattern suggests the use of irregular migration routes by Indian nationals, particularly through Latin America, to position themselves for SIJ eligibility. While India's numbers are modest compared to Central America, its ranking shows the global reach of networks exploiting humanitarian visa channels. The report noted rising SIJ applications from Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, countries with terrorism concerns. For India, this overlap with its wider neighbourhood has security relevance, requiring close monitoring. Another issue is the EB4 visa backlog. SIJs are processed under EB4, the same category used by Indian religious workers and certain professionals. The surge in SIJ petitions increases wait times for other applicants, indirectly affecting legitimate Indian cases. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
