Suresh Gopi-Anupama Parameswaran's ‘Janaki V Vs State of Kerala' gets OTT release date. Here's when and where to watch the film:

The Hindu2 days ago
The makers of Janaki V Vs State of Kerala, the controversial Malayalam film starring Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran, have announced the film's OTT release. The Pravin Narayanan-directed courtroom drama will premiere on ZEE5 on Independence Day, August 15.
ZEE5 unveiled a new trailer of the film to announce the news. 'Janaki, a woman silenced by society, rises with unshakable courage to take on the state itself. As the courtroom turns into a battlefield, her truth begins to shake the foundation of law and order,' reads the logline by the streamer. Anupama plays Janaki Vidhyadharan, a sexual assault survivor, while Suresh plays her counsel, David Abel Donovan.
Janaki V Vs State of Kerala, which was released in theatres on July 17, made headlines for several weeks ahead of its release. The film courted controversy after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) demanded that the makers change the title as well as the name of the titular character of Janaki, apparently because the name also refers to the Hindu goddess Sita.
Later, the revising committee of the CBFC also rejected certification for the film. The decision led to a political uproar in Kerala, with many film bodies organising protests against the censor board. Stating that films bearing similar names had been released earlier, the Kerala High Court sought an explanation from the CBFC and asked whether the changes suggested were a challenge to the freedom of creative expression.
The CBFC later cleared the release of the re-edited version of film, which was re-titled as Janaki V. v/s State of Kerala.
Also starring Divya Pillai, Sruthi Ramachandran, Askar Ali, Madhav Suresh Gopi, and Baiju Sandosh, the film has music scored by Gireesh Narayanan and background score by Ghibran. Renadive is the cinematographer, while Samjith Mohammed is the editor. J Phanindra Kumar produces the film under the Cosmos Entertainments banner.
The Hindu's review of the film read, 'For a courtroom drama, there is hardly any scene that makes an impact. As if to excite the audience lulled by the sluggish drama, there is an unnecessary jump scare sequence, which seems inspired from a B-grade horror movie. Songs further drag down the narrative. With its insensitive take on an important issue, Janaki V Vs State of Kerala becomes a film as pointless as the letter 'V', which was added to Janaki's name to satisfy the whims of the censors.'

Mothevari Love Story's Anil Geela credits Vijay Deverakonda for ‘push' towards cinema: ‘Played huge role in my career'

Almost a decade ago, when the people of Lambadipally, Telangana, decided to share bits of their lives on the YouTube channel My Village Show, little did they know their world was about to change. Staggering views, love from celebrities and fans alike, and a lot of exposure later, Anil Geela is playing the lead actor in the Zee5 web series Mothevari Love Story. Incidentally, it's directed by Burra Shiva Krishna, who is also an alum of the channel. In a candid interview with Hindustan Times, Anil talks about playing the lead, his love for acting, how the Deverakonda brothers supported his career and more. Anil Geela acted with Vijay Deverakonda in the 2020 film World Famous Lover. My Village Show alum goes places Anil says the spark for acting began even before he could've dreamt of seeing himself on the big screen. 'Whenever I would act on YouTube, it would spark a deep interest in me. Soon, people approached me for cameos in star-driven films. And when I saw myself on the big screen, I knew I could move beyond playing small roles and maybe even play the lead some day,' says Anil. Some of his co-stars from the YouTube channel – Gangavva, Raju, Chandru, Anji Maama and others – have also forayed into films, bringing visibility to the whole team. 'Our work brought us recognition, and it's all the more special because people from our region rarely get a chance to act in films. All this was only possible because we believed in creating quality entertainment which brought us closer to the audience,' he says. The making of Mothevari Love Story Mothevari Love Story sticks to Anil's roots by telling the story of two youngsters from rural Telangana who decide to elope, only to find themselves in odd circumstances. 'This web series was created with today's audience in mind – people who are caught up in stressful jobs and busy lives. We wanted to bring them some fun, laughter, and a break from daily stress. The series uses pure Telangana slang and reflects real village life,' explains the actor. It helped that the series' story is based on real-life drama that Anil says happens in many rural households. He also says that all the actors who acted in it are from Telangana and fluent in the dialect, making it all the more authentic. 'We're proud to represent our region with honesty,' he says, adding, 'Right now, films and series rooted in Telangana culture are getting a lot of appreciation, and we feel lucky to be a part of that. We've been creating Telangana-based rural content for a decade, so this comes very naturally to us.' Anil also cannot believe that the channel evolved from something simple to producing content like Mothevari Love Story today. 'Many of our team members acted in it, our writer is now the director, our production manager is the producer. What more could I ask for?' he says. The Deverakonda brothers' support Anil and the rest of the My Village Show crew might all be self-made, but the actor says acting in Vijay Deverakonda's 2020 film World Famous Lover boosted his confidence. It also made him decide that he is looking to play strong characters that support the story, be it as a lead or otherwise. 'My focus is not just on being the lead, but on acting in roles that suit me and allow me to grow. I want to continue acting and take on meaningful projects,' he says. His YouTube channel has hosted numerous stars promoting their films over the years, and Anil believes that 'goodwill' is now helping him. 'I want to give a big thanks to Anand Deverakonda, Tarun Bhascker, Priyadarshi, and many others who supported us by sharing posts and stories of the series on social media,' he says, adding, 'But the biggest push came from Vijay Deverakonda anna. He gave me my first big opportunity in cinema. It played a huge role in my career. Later, when we approached Anand Deverakonda to release our series' poster, he agreed to do so. Their support has made a major impact on my journey, and I'm truly thankful to both of them.'

Bachi Karkaria's Erratica and its cheeky sign-off character, Alec Smart, have had a growing league of followers since 1994 when the column began in the Metropolis on Saturday. It now appears on the Edit Page of the Times of India, every Thursday. It takes a sly dig at whatever has inflated political/celebrity egos, and got public knickers in a twist that week. It makes you chuckle, think and marvel at the elasticity of the English language. It is a shooting-from-the-lip advice column to the lovelorn and otherwise torn, telling them to stop cribbing and start living -- all in her her branded pithy, witty style. LESS ... MORE One more absurd 'cause' for rape 'Attending late-night parties could invite rape or gang rape,' screamed posters plastered on Ahmedabad road dividers. Bet, many passers-by nodded sanctimoniously. However social media outrage over such sexist nonsense forced police to pull down what they themselves had green-lighted. Two senior officials red-facedly admitted that they'd given permission for an NGO's 'traffic awareness' campaign — but had failed to check its content. So once again women get the 'challan' for their violator's out-of-control libido – and leave the actual menace free to rape again The rare instances of men being told to refrain equally trivialise this grave and continuous crime. Haryana khap panchayat member Jitender Chhatar made the remarkable medical discovery that 'chowmein leads to hormonal imbalance evoking an urge to indulge in such acts'. So MSG actually stands for 'male sexual glutamate'? Wow! CPI leader Atul Kumar Anjan's finding was equally awesome. At a UP rally, he thundered that the 'condom ad featuring Sunny Leone will unleash more rapes'. He got his come-uppance: he 'kept vomiting' after watching porn, 'only for one-or two minutes' and, of course, 'only for research purposes'. Sometimes ''Tis not in ourselves, but in our stars, that we are …' Endorsing Shakespeare, a Bangalore astrologer concluded that 'Aries women are likely to be raped in the bathroom' and a Capricornian victimised by 'father, mother or colleague'. Sort of agreeing, the 94-year-old shankaracharya of Dwarka Peeth said women 'should stop all their drum-beating' over visiting the inner sanctum of Maharashtra's Shani Shingnapur temple. 'Worshipping Shani will bring ill luck to them and give rise to crimes against them like rape.' A day later, he blamed honeymooners and picnickers for the 2013 Kedarnath flash floods in Uttarakhand, warning that such a 'polluting' of sacred Hindu sites would lead to more disasters. So now we know that women only are to blame for 'wearing tight clothes' and not obeying such important rules. They never get raped because they belong to wrong caste, creed or class. Who asked them work in a powerful politician's house or public hospital; go on assignment to deserted mills; or take a late bus home? What's rape got to do with our indulgently saying 'boys will be boys'? Then, Sir, girls can also be girls, no? Imtiaz Ali defends Shah Rukh Khan's National Award win for Jawan: 'If the country has honoured him...'

In response to the controversy surrounding Shah Rukh Khan's recent National Award win for the movie "Jawan," filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has publicly defended the actor, telling IANS that it was a proud moment while speaking on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai. 'No, no. If the country has honoured him, it's obviously a big thing. I would like to congratulate Shah Rukh Khan and all the people who got this big award. Thank you," he stated, sending his best wishes to each and every recipient. Shah Rukh Khan's performance in the movie "Jawan" earned him his first National Award for Best Actor on August 1. Urvashi, a South actress, started the controversy by quietly casting doubt on SRK's National Award victory. Urvashi pointed to the jury's unfair decisions while accepting the Best Supporting Actress award for "Ullozhukku." She allegedly questioned what made Jawan deserving of Best Actor honors, without specifically mentioning Shah Rukh, while veteran Malayalam actor Vijayaraghavan's stirring performance wasn't even taken into consideration for the lead category. Online discussion was sparked by her comments. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They were so beautiful before; look at them now; number 10 will Surprise you Undo However, some internet users were shocked to understand that Shah Rukh Khan had won the National Award for "Jawan," wondering why it had taken him 33 years to receive this honor. Many noted that he was not given credit for some of his most famous roles in movies like "Devdas," "Swades," "Veer Zaara," and "Chak De! India." The actor's victory generated discussion regarding the jury's selection criteria and timing. Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna defended Shah Rukh Khan in the face of increasing criticism over the actor's National Award victory. "People who are saying that Shah Rukh Khan should not have received the award for this film (Jawan) but for Swades—remember A. R. Rahman received the Oscar for 'Jai Ho' and not for the various beautiful songs he created in the past," he informed IANS. "Shah Rukh has been working hard for the past 40 years now—so what is wrong if he has received a National Award?"
