Tourism Appreciation Month kicks off, TDC funding threats loom
House bills 7033 and 1221 would force 75% of tourist development tax revenue to be used to implement local property tax cuts. That's the money the TDC uses to fund tourism promotion and marketing, and build and maintain tourism facilities.
It could even dissolve local tourist development councils.
'The TDC, we focus on how we continue to support tourism in bay county, I mean it's a 3.1-billion-dollar industry, and without destination marketing, the number of visitors who come to Panama City Beach every year and across Bay County would likely go down,' Bay County TDC executive director Dan Rowe said.
Not only do local marketing efforts increase tourism, but they also influence the demographics of visitors.

Bay County's TDC helped PCB move away from the spring break reputation.
'Panama City Beach is a great place to go 12 months out of the year. We started this, you know, 15 years ago just to make sure that we were marketing it on a year-round basis, so we have less need for business, college spring break business, quite frankly, because the revenues were coming other times of the year,' Rowe said.
The TDC also helps fund major local events like Beach Home for the holidays, the New Year's Eve Beach Ball Drop, UNwineD, Mardi Gras, and more.
House members have already passed House Bills 7033 and 1221, which would require voters to renew bed taxes every eight years.
The Senate is still debating its two companion bills, 7034 and 1664.
Visit Panama City Beach is hosting tourism appreciation day next Wednesday at the county pier.Destination Panama City's event is Monday at 11:00 at the Panama City Marina. Both events are free and open to the public.

For the first time since Hurricane Katrina, an Amtrak conductor in New Orleans shouted "all aboard!" as passengers loaded up a Mobile-bound train on Saturday. Why it matters: The Mardi Gras line links New Orleans with four other Gulf Coast towns between it and Alabama, a move that city and state officials will boost tourism and business opportunities along that stretch while, they hope, proving regional rail can thrive in the Deep South. What's next: Local leaders and Amtrak officials hope the long-promised train route between New Orleans and Baton Rouge soon becomes a reality that leads to a rail expansion between metro areas across the state. The needed replacement of a trestle bridge over the Bonnet Carre spillway remains a sticking point, Harris says. "We need to use this as a launching pad to get the rail to Baton Rouge and to Shreveport and across North Louisiana," Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said Saturday. "We've got an incredible opportunity. ... If we can't get it done with (House Majority Leader) Steve Scalise and (Speaker of the House) Mike Johnson, it'll never get done."

2 Americans drown at Carnival Cruise's private resort in the Bahamas
(NEXSTAR) — Two Americans are dead after separate drowning incidents at a multi-million dollar 'exclusive' vacation destination in the Bahamas, according to authorities. The drownings happened on Friday on the island of Grand Bahama, about 100 miles off the coast of Florida, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a release. Both occurred at Celebration Key, the $600 million tourist space opened by Carnival Cruise Line earlier this summer. The first drowning happened just before noon, according to police. A 79-year-old man was snorkeling at the beach when he was found unresponsive. A lifeguard pulled him from the water and performed CPR, but the man was ultimately pronounced dead. In a statement to Nexstar, a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Lines confirmed the guests were traveling with their families on different ships, Mardi Gras and Carnival Elation. The former typically sails out of Port Canaveral in Orlando, according to the Carnival Cruise Lines' website, while the latter has routes out of Jacksonville, Florida. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families and our Care Team is providing assistance,' the statement added. Celebration Key officially opened in July and features five main areas comprised of lagoons, pools, a swing bar, a shopping space, and more, according to Carnival Cruise Lines. The company expects roughly two million guests will visit Celebration Key each year. Come 2028, that number is expected to double.

Two Carnival cruise passengers drown hours apart at newly opened private Celebration Key resort
Two American tourists drowned hours apart at Carnival's private Bahamas resort on Friday, less than a month since the cruise line opened the $600 million Caribbean getaway destination. Carnival officials told the Post that the 'water emergency incidents' involving guests traveling on two different ships happened at Celebration Key on Grand Bahama Island. 'Carnival lifeguards and medical teams working at the resort responded to both incidents, one occurring in the lagoon and the other at the beach,' a Carnival Cruise spokesperson said.
