Tourism Appreciation Month kicks off, TDC funding threats loom
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Bay County officials are excited about a number of events they have planned for Tourism Appreciation Month. However, they can't ignore the state legislative threats looming over the local destination marketing industry. House bills 7033 and 1221 would force 75% of tourist development tax revenue to be used to implement local property tax cuts. That's the money the TDC uses to fund tourism promotion and marketing, and build and maintain tourism facilities. It could even dissolve local tourist development councils. 'The TDC, we focus on how we continue to support tourism in bay county, I mean it's a 3.1-billion-dollar industry, and without destination marketing, the number of visitors who come to Panama City Beach every year and across Bay County would likely go down,' Bay County TDC executive director Dan Rowe said. Not only do local marketing efforts increase tourism, but they also influence the demographics of visitors. Mayor-elect Allan Branch talks future of Panama City Bay County's TDC helped PCB move away from the spring break reputation. 'Panama City Beach is a great place to go 12 months out of the year. We started this, you know, 15 years ago just to make sure that we were marketing it on a year-round basis, so we have less need for business, college spring break business, quite frankly, because the revenues were coming other times of the year,' Rowe said. The TDC also helps fund major local events like Beach Home for the holidays, the New Year's Eve Beach Ball Drop, UNwineD, Mardi Gras, and more. House members have already passed House Bills 7033 and 1221, which would require voters to renew bed taxes every eight years. The Senate is still debating its two companion bills, 7034 and 1664. Visit Panama City Beach is hosting tourism appreciation day next Wednesday at the county Panama City's event is Monday at 11:00 at the Panama City Marina. Both events are free and open to the public. New must-visit Downtown Panama City businesses
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – If you look past the construction, Downtown Panama City is as cool and creative as ever. You can complete every item on your to-do list without leaving downtown. Starting with a coffee. 'So my wife is the herbalist, and she's the green thumb plant lady. That's her passion. She's the one who really makes the shop look cool. I'm into coffee and food, and she's into everything else. So, together, I think we make a really good team, and we're just excited to bring our passion here to downtown,' Wild Root owner & operator Eric Marcus said. With another shop in Lynn Haven, Wild Root owners are excited to have some roots in the downtown community. Panama City Beach's 7th annual UNwineD event offers food and fun 'We're trying to do things a little bit different. There's a lot of offices here, so we're trying to do a grab-and-go on the menu. We had this item on the menu called Bob Marley, of all things. It is sourdough bread with cottage cheese, apricot jam, a little balsamic glaze, and mold on salt on top of it. It's great,' Marcus said. While Marcus says there's risk any time you open a business, he's confident the neighborhood's coffee, plant, and food lovers will support the aesthetic shop. Now that you're caffeinated, it's time to run some errands. 'It's a neighborhood pop-in. It's a place you can go in and grab a roll of toilet paper or some WD-40 or a gift for a baby shower. We have fresh produce, we serve beer and wine, heavy focus on local,' Revival House owner & operator Rachel Davis said. The Revival House general store opened on March 15th and has already become a go-to spot. Davis says she hopes the revival house will be a space you can stay for either five minutes or five hours. 'We want it to be a place that people can come in and grab something quick and head to the house or head to a dinner party or had to work or you can sit down and work. You can grab a cup of coffee, you can grab a nice cold beer at the end of your day if you like to,' Davis added. At this point, you may have enjoyed a draft beer at Revival House and thought, I want another. The Local 115 has local beer, local sports, and oysters. Owner Kyle Vandergrift says the restaurant and bar pays homage to athletes and coaches who have made a difference in the community over the last 70 years. Stolen cattle gates lead to arrest of man in Jackson County If you're looking for some fine wines and more of a gourmet experience, all you have to do is walk around the corner. Upon entering Somethin's Cookin' Downtown, you'll feel like you just stepped into the pages of a cookbook. 'We're going to actually start opening Friday and Saturday for dinner. We're basically a lunch place now, but we do cooking classes, we've got plenty of wine, we do our homemade breads, we got soups, we do wine tastings, probably spring night like every other Thursday night, but Friday and Saturday nights like it just gives you a new opportunity for something else deep in between Ferruccis and a sports bar you know, kind of kind of fit the bill in the middle,' Somethin's Cookin owners & operators Ted & Beth Holland said. Medical Academy students gain hands-on experience at Ascension Sacred Heart Bay
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – When Dr. John Wade retired from medicine 12 years ago, he wanted to create a program for students to learn about healthcare. That's when the Medical Academy at Mosley High School was born. 'They do human biology, human anatomy. And then we do internships where they rotate into clinics and hospitals. They meet doctors, they do procedures. We have premium morning where they meet every morning at 7:00 and they have to do dissection,' Mosley High School Pre-Med Director Dr. John Wade said. But Dr. Wade says this is more than just teaching medicine; it's about building future leaders. JCSO arrests suspect after shots fired from vehicle near Grand Ridge 'Not only have we become really proficient in medicine and anatomy and health care, but also in leading groups of people and being empathetic about our leadership and helping engage others,' Mosley High School Senior Chase Peterson said. 50 of his students visited Ascension Sacred Heart Bay Friday. They toured the cath lab, where they saw doctors inserting catheters into a heart attack patient. They saw doctors reading and using x-rays in radiology. Students learn how to perform CPR at the Regional Educational Lab, and they saw how they treat trauma patients in the emergency room. 'It was really cool. Just like seeing in person, like, you know, all the stuff you just see on TV and like seeing it in real life,' Mosley High School Senior Yva Toole said. The in-person experience helps students decide if a career in medicine is in their future, and it helps Ascension connect with future employees. 'They are truly our workforce, they're our future. They're the ones that 10 years from now will be staffing the hospital as a nurse, x-ray tech, cardiovascular tech, surgical tech, and even on a path to medical school. So it's so important that we invest in them and their future,' Ascension Sacred Heart Bay President & CEO Robin Godwin said. Panama City Beach's 7th annual UNwineD event offers food and fun 'I've already saw two of our students are already working in the hospital who was in our program,' Wade said. The Medical Academy has grown from the original 10 students to more than 150 today. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
