Lib Dem councillor ‘took part in pro-Palestine protest at police station'
A Liberal Democrat councillor took part in a pro-Palestine protest at a police station, a court has heard.
Imran Latif, 45, walked into Cardiff Bay police station in June and chained himself to another protester at the front desk, a court has heard.
The councillor, who has sat on Cardiff council since 2022, pleaded guilty at Cardiff magistrates' court to locking himself to a person to cause significant disturbance at a police station. He was acquitted of one other charge.
Despite his conviction, he is set to continue his role as councillor for the Penylan ward.

The court heard the incident took place just hours after 50 to 60 people protested against the war in Gaza by walking through Cardiff city centre.
Protesters went to the police station over concerns about someone who had been arrested at the demonstration, the court was told.
South Wales Police said 16 people were arrested after the spontaneous protest at the front desk at 9.30pm on June 3.
'Fully realises the foolishness of that moment'
Nadeem Majid, representing Latif, said he was not part of the demonstration that had taken place in the city centre earlier that day.
Mr Majid said the councillor had attended the scene at the police station to find out what was going on.
He said Latif 'fully realises the foolishness' of that moment and added that 'to his credit, he has been fully transparent'.
Latif, who was suspended by his party after his arrest, was handed an 18-month conditional discharge by District Judge Mark Layton.
He was also ordered to pay a total of £776 at Cardiff magistrates' court.
A second charge of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause a disturbance was dismissed after no evidence was offered.

Mr Majid, of M&M Solicitors, said: 'The conclusion of the matter today, resulting in one of the two charges laid against him being dismissed, is a great weight lifted off the shoulders of councillor Latif, who has had this matter hanging over his head for some time.
'Councillor Latif is pleased with the outcome of his case and is grateful to his legal team for their assistance and will now continue to serve his constituents in his capacity as councillor.'
After the sentence, a Cardiff Council spokesman said: 'A conditional discharge by a magistrates' court does not preclude a Councillor from acting in the office of member of a Local Authority in Wales.
'In due course, it will be a matter for the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales to consider whether the actions of the councillor will meet the threshold of an investigation of a potential breach of Cardiff Council's Members' Code of Conduct.'
The Welsh Liberal Democrats said they will now review the incident that took place in June 2024 through their internal processes.

State Department Announces Pause on Visitor Visas From Gaza
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The U.S. State Department on Saturday announced a pause on any visitor visas for individuals from Gaza as the agency conducts a review of the "process and procedures" related to the issuance of a small number of those visas on a "temporary medical-humanitarian" basis. Right-wing activist Laura Loomer claimed on X that the pause was in response to her report that "unvetted Palestinians" were arriving in the United States. However, the State Department did not specify why it had decided to conduct the review. Newsweek reached out to the State Department by submission form outside of normal business hours on Saturday. Why It Matters Following Hamas' surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and Israel's military response, the situation in Gaza has faced several significant and rapid developments over the past month as a famine has gripped the enclave, drawing broad international attention and shifting public opinion on Israel's operations. At the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his intention to occupy Gaza City in seeming contradiction to his earlier statements in which he insisted Israel would not occupy the territory. Loomer has risen to prominence following President Donald Trump's victory in last year's presidential election and subsequent return to office. She has served as one of the loudest pro-Trump supporters in the political and media spheres and is seen as an influential figure in right-wing circles. Loomer was present alongside Trump at times during his 2024 campaign, and has been tied to Trump's decision to relieve national security adviser Mike Waltz of his post, even as officials denied she played any factor. What To Know On X on Saturday morning, the State Department wrote: "All visitor visas for individuals from Gaza are being stopped while we conduct a full and thorough review of the process and procedures used to issue a small number of temporary medical-humanitarian visas in recent days." Visitor visas have remained a contentious issue for the second Trump administration, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier this year announcing plans to more aggressively revoke and scrutinize student visas from China, which would ostensibly be in response to failures by college institutions to crackdown on student demonstrations against Israel. Pauses on visa issuance in narrowly defined circumstances can delay urgent medical travel and complicate humanitarian coordination involving U.S. hospitals, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and foreign governments. The announcement did not specify how many visas were affected, how long the review would last, whether pending appointments or already-issued visas would be canceled or resumed, or how the State Department would handle urgent medical travel during the review. However, Loomer on X took credit for prompting the review, writing in a post that the department announced its pause "following the release of my reports yesterday exposing flights of GAZANS arriving at airports all across the U.S." In her initial posts on Friday on X, Loomer took aim at the group Heal Palestine, a nonprofit founded in 2024 to "deliver urgent relief and long-term support to Palestinian children and families," according to the group's website. Heal Palestine says on its website that it has evacuated 148 individuals, including 63 children, from Gaza to receive care in the U.S. Loomer questioned how the Palestinians received their visas and further were able to leave Gaza, calling the entire operation a "national security threat" and demanding that whoever "signed off on these visas" should be "fired." Newsweek has also reached out to Heal Palestine by email outside of normal business hours on Saturday. "Who approved the visas? How many more are being given visas to come into the US, and why are [Gavin Newsom] [Greg Abbott] harboring Palestinian 'refugees' in California and Texas?" Loomer asked. She posted several videos of people from Gaza arriving in an airport which she claimed is in the U.S. while comments under the videos said it was in Europe, possibly Belgium. She therefore applauded the State Department's decision to pause its visitor visa program, writing: "This is fantastic news. Thank you @SecRubio for your prompt response to this invasion of our country by NGOS that have been accused of being pro-HAMAS," she wrote. "Hopefully all GAZANS will be added to President Trump's travel ban. There are doctors in other countries. The US is not the world's hospital!" Meanwhile, Representative Randy Fine, a Florida Republican, credited Loomer as the reason for the State Department's decision in a post on X on Saturday morning and wrote: "Massive credit needs to be given to [Laura Loomer] for uncovering this and making me and other officials aware. Well done, Laura." Loomer responded by thanking the congressman for "speaking out about this and sharing my report." Secretary of State Marco Rubio is seen in Washington, D.C., on August 14. Jim Watson/AFP via Getty Images // AFP via Getty Images What People Are Saying Right-wing activist Laura Loomer on Saturday wrote on X: "There are doctors in other countries. It's incredible isn't it how Qatar and Saudi Arabia rolled out the camels, Red and purple carpets and the most luxurious gifts and decorations for President Trump and his staff in the Middle East." "If the Arabs have money to get flashy with Trump, they have money to buy some prosthetics for GAZANS or import them to their own hospitals and luxurious towns. They constantly brag about how rich they are. They want to shame the West into accepting more Muslim invaders. They think their bribes and flashy bling will make the West turn a blind eye. The Arabs need to pay up or just put their money where their mouth is and take these GAZANS they want to force on the West." Representative Randy Fine of Florida wrote on X: "BREAKING: [Donald Trump] and [Marco Rubio] have immediately halted visas to Gazans that were being issued by deep state actors while we get to the bottom of how this national security risk was allowed. Massive credit needs to be given to [Laura Loomer] for uncovering this and making me and other officials aware. Well done, Laura." What Happens Next? The Department's post indicated a review was underway but did not provide a timeline, leaving the duration and operational consequences of the pause uncertain.

Liverpool fan arrested after allegedly yelling racist remarks at Bournemouth star in shocking situation
A 47-year-old Liverpool fan who was last seen in a wheelchair was arrested Saturday after allegedly shouting racial slurs at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo in a stunning scene that led to Friday's Premier League opener in England being delayed for several minutes. Meyerside police confirmed the fan was ejected from Friday's match and then announced his arrest one day later on allegations of a racially aggravated public order offense. He has been taken into custody to be interviewed. 'Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together. To my @afcbournemouth teammates who supported me in that moment, to the @LiverpoolFC players and fans who showed their true character, to the @premierleague officials who handled it professionally – thank you,' Semenyo posted to social media Saturday. Advertisement 'Football showed its best side when it mattered most. Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch. This is why I play – for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be. The overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together.' 7 Semenyo hearing the alleged remarks. @BPINewsOrg/X The uplifting message came after he previously posted to his Instagram Story a message sent to him with racially charged images, which he captioned: 'When will it stop……' Advertisement The shocking scene unfolded in the 28th minute of a scoreless game during the Premier League's opener in Liverpool. 7 Semenyo (second from right) while the game was stopped. AP While Semenyo waited to throw the ball in during the first half of the 4-2 loss, a fan wearing Liverpool gear moved to the front row and made animated gestures toward Semenyo before moving back. Reports stated the game was delayed for two to three minutes. The Premier League released a statement alleging 'discriminatory abuse from the crowd' that resulted in an investigation, while Liverpool condemned the fan's alleged behavior. 'The incident at Anfield will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs,' the Premier League said. 'Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. 'We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.' Semenyo responded by tallying both of his goals in the second half, and teammate Adam Smith told Sky Sports that Semenyo's toughness to handle it all showed his character. 'It shouldn't be happening,' Smith told the outlet, as transcribed by ESPN. 'I don't know how Ant's played on to be honest and come up with those goals. It's totally unacceptable. 'To be fair, the Liverpool players were very supportive as well towards Antoine and the rest of the team. It was handled in the right way but … so angry.' Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also spoke out in support of his opponent, calling it a 'disgrace.' 7 Semenyo celebrates during Friday's match. AFP via Getty Images Advertisement 'I can't believe it,' he told Sky Sports. 'These things shouldn't happen but unfortunately it does and it is an absolute disgrace in my eyes. 'First and foremost, these things should never happen in the world, not only football. But in general, racism is not of this world in my opinion, but if we are to be realistic, unfortunately, it still exists and that is the painful side of it. 'We have to deal with it in the here and now.' 7 Referee Anthony Taylor looks on with AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola and Liverpool manager Arne Slot after the game was paused due to a report of racial abuse from the crowd by AFC Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo. State Department halts visitor visa process for all Gazans
The far-right podcast host and presidential ally on Friday made several posts about alleged flights of Gazans to the U.S. with humanitarian aid group HEAL Palestine, which seeks to evacuate and provide medical assistance for injured Gazans — in particular children — wounded during Israel's ongoing offensive in the besieged strip. According to the organization's website, it has successfully evacuated 148 total Gazans, including 63 injured children, bringing them to the U.S. for medical care. Loomer raged against the program in a series of posts Friday and Saturday morning, demanding that 'the Trump administration needs to shut this abomination down ASAP before a family member of one of these GAZANS goes rogue and kills Americans for HAMAS.' Her posts caught the attention of some staunch pro-Israel Republicans. 'Deeply concerned about the incoming flights - including to Texas - allegedly filled with folks from Gaza as reported by @LauraLoomer. Inquiring,' Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) wrote on Friday. After the State Department made its announcement, Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) attributed the decision to Loomer's agitating, writing on X that 'massive credit needs to be given to @LauraLoomer for uncovering this and making me and other officials aware.' The administration's move comes amid an international reckoning over Israel's war in Gaza. An increasing number of the U.S.'s global allies — as well as members of President Donald Trump's MAGA circles — have expressed outrage over the dire conditions in the strip, and demanded that the U.S. reconsider its support for the country's government. But while Trump has made comments recognizing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, his administration has shown no sign of wavering in its support of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As a growing list of countries have come out in support of Palestinian statehood, the State Department last month sanctioned leaders of the Palestine Liberation Organization and Palestinian Authority, while top U.S. officials publicly embraced Israeli leadership.
