Ruben Amorim vows to turn around Man Utd after ‘disaster season'
United ended the campaign 15th in the standings after Sunday's 2-0 win against Champions League-chasing Aston Villa, which came thanks to Amad Diallo's header and a penalty from departing Christian Eriksen and was aided by a controversial disallowed goal for Villa.
Amorim took to the field with his players shortly after the whistle to address the Old Trafford crowd.
'I want to apologise for this season,' said the head coach, who succeeded Erik ten Hag in November. 'I know you are really disappointed with me and with the team.
'The second thing I want to say is thank you. We are very grateful for your support during the season and I know that was really hard.
'I know it was really hard to support us in many games but now we have to make a choice or we stay stuck in the past – because this season is in the past, it's over.
'We fight each other, or we stick together and move forward.
'Six months ago, in my first three games in charge, with two victories and one draw, I said to you 'the storm is coming'.
'Today, after this disaster season, I want to tell you the good days are coming.
"If there is one club in the world… that can overcome any situation, it's our club."

United bade farewell to Victor Lindelof, Eriksen and Jonny Evans ahead of a lap of appreciation – before heading straight to the airport for money-spinning friendlies in Malaysia and and Hong Kong.
United have to make money where they can to help fund Amorim's rebuild having missed out on Champions League qualification, and an estimated £100million windfall, by losing to Spurs in Bilbao.
Sweeping changes are needed to shape the side in the Portuguese's image three years after interim boss Ralf Rangnick warned the club needed 'open-heart surgery'.
Asked if things were still as drastic as that, Amorim said: 'No, I think we did a lot of changes as a club in this maybe six months.
'We changed maybe so many things that a normal club could do in three years. A lot of people leaving and in the day-by-day, the way we behave, who is in charge in Carrington, who decides things.
'That is really important. If you look in the past, I think that was a characteristic of this club, that the culture, the standards were really high.'
Pushed on how much the squad needs changing, Amorim added: 'It's hard to talk about that because we have the (financial) fair play rules and we are limited, especially this year, so we need to be patient.
'Of course, we are going to have changes. You saw three players today are leaving, and they are characters.
'We need that kind of characters here, but then we have to see the characteristics of the player to try to play in the different way, but we have to be patient because we have the limitation of fair play rules.'

Oliver Glasner believes Eberechi Eze has played his final Crystal Palace match
The Palace boss insisted Eze would start the Eagles' first leg against the Norwegian side at Selhurst Park – also their first foray into major European football – before Arsenal swooped in with a £60million deal. Jean-Philippe Mateta strike gives Crystal Palace victory
Palace's first foray into major European competition was overshadowed by the absence of Eberechi Eze – understood to be edging closer to completing a £60million move to Arsenal – from the team sheet. Eagles boss Oliver Glasner had initially insisted Eze would start, but told Channel 5 before the contest that the 27-year-old had phoned him on Thursday morning to say he did not feel well. Mateta finally nodded the hosts in front in the 54th minute, and the Frenchman's goal proved the winner after the Eagles could not capitalise on any further chances. Captain Marc Guehi, still linked to Liverpool, was in the starting line-up. After lifting the FA Cup in May, Glasner's men expected to be playing in the Europa League, where they would have qualified directly for the league phase. Enzo Maresca hopes Chelsea can improve their conversion rate to aid title hopes
The Blues have spent around £160million on attacking players, all of whom played some part in Sunday's lacklustre 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge. Their tally of 64 league goals was beaten by Brighton and Brentford and matched by 17th-place Tottenham, whilst champions Liverpool outscored Maresca's team by 22. 'I don't know if we (now) have more capacity (to score), but for sure if we've made changes it's because we think that with changes we could improve out attacking phase,' said Maresca. 'I was quite happy last year in terms goals we scored but with the amount of chances we created, I think we were one of the best in the league.' Strikers Liam Delap and Joao Pedro have been brought in to try and revitalise an attack which relied too heavily on goals from defence and midfield during the last campaign, though both players struggled to make an impact in the draw with Palace. Nicolas Jackson was the team's only senior striker last season but suffered a goal drought which lasted almost five months between December and May, whilst teenager Marc Guiu failed to score in the league. Both players also spent significant time out injured. Neither is set to play a role at Stamford Bridge this season with Jackson having been told he can leave and Guiu currently on loan at Sunderland. 'Hopefully also this season we can be a bit more lucky in terms injury,' said Maresca. 'Don't forget last season we lost Nico and Guiu. But if we are able to create the same volume (of chances) that we created last year I'm quite happy. 'Hopefully this season we can be more clinical when we need to be.' Maresca reiterated the club's position on Jackson, who scored just 10 league goals last season, and has been made surplus to requirements following the arrivals of Delap and Pedro. The 24-year-old, who was suspended for the draw with Palace, will not play in Friday's trip to West Ham and has drawn interested from Newcastle, who are waiting for a resolution to their stand-off with Alexander Isak before deciding whether to move. 'We've brought two strikers,' said Maresca. 'The player (Jackson) is open to leave. If there is any good solution, he is going to leave. 'It's very easy. It's not complicated. I've said already that Nico is a very good player. He can be even better.' On the new arrivals, the Italian added: 'Pedro probably in the small space gives us more than Liam. Liam probably gives us a bit more in terms of physicality and runs in behind. It depends on the gameplan. 'On Sunday it was difficult for any striker, but both are good and both are going to score goals.' Chelsea have accepted a £26million offer from Villarreal for defender Renato Veiga, the PA news agency understands. The Portugal left-back's departure would take Chelsea's total player sales this summer to over £250m. The Blues are poised to make a hefty profit on the 22-year-old having paid £12m for him when he arrived from Basel in July 2024. Veiga, who signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea, made just one Premier League start for them last season and six appearances off the bench. He spent the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Juventus, making 12 starts in Serie A. Chelsea have so far sold 10 players this summer and should Veiga complete his move, they will have recouped around £252m from 11 departures to offset the £277m they have spent on nine new players.
