UK Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan Opens New Chapter, Says British MP

Morocco World2 days ago

Rabat – Fabian Hamilton, Labour MP for Leeds North East and Chair of the British Group of the Inter Parliamentary Union, has emphasized the significance of the UK's recent decision to endorse Morocco's Autonomy Plan.
Yesterday, the UK announced its full support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan as a credible and pragmatic solution to the regional dispute over the Western Sahara.
The move was formalized in a joint press statement signed in Rabat by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
Addressing Moroccan media directly, Hamilton expressed his excitement and hope for a new chapter in relations between the two countries.
'I am very happy to be here in the Parliament of Morocco,' he said. 'Yesterday the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom declared that the United Kingdom government recognized and supported the Moroccan government's autonomy plan and the plan of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.'
He pointed out a growing consensus among the world's top powers: 'We now have three out of the five permanent members of the Security Council supporting the autonomy plan.'
This backing bolsters Morocco's position and signals growing international acceptance of its autonomy plan on Western Sahara. With the UK's new stance, it now joins other major global powers in supporting Morocco's territorial integrity.
For Hamilton, this recognition means more than just political alignment, as it opens real opportunities for collaboration. 'This is a door to future collaboration between Morocco and the United Kingdom,' he said.

He emphasized that the matter of Western Sahara is now settled between the two countries, clearing the way for work together in many fields.
'We believe now this issue is resolved between our countries and we're clear where we stand that we can now continue to the future with political collaboration, with collaboration on energy projects, on trade, on commerce, and on political and security issues too, as well as climate change.'
Hamilton's words reflected a vision where the two countries benefit from renewed partnership. 'This opens a gate for all of us, and the future for Morocco and the United Kingdom looks better than it ever has been,' he said with genuine optimism.
His final words carried a strong sense of unity: 'And I'm grateful to my government and the government of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco. The future is ours.'
Moreover, in yesterday's joint statement, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy acknowledged the weight of the Western Sahara issue for Rabat. 'The UK knows how important the Western Sahara is to Morocco,' he said.
'The time for a resolution is long overdue. We understand the urgent need to secure a definitive and lasting solution, one that delivers a better future for the people of the region.'
With the UK now on board, Morocco's autonomy initiative gains new momentum and a stronger foothold in negotiations and on the world stage.
Over 113 countries are now supporting the autonomy initiative as a serious and credible basis to resolve the dispute.

Poultry Prices Go Up Ahead of Eid Al Adha

Rabat – Moroccan markets have witnessed a notable increase in poultry produce just days ahead of Eid Al Adha, which will take place on June 7 in Morocco. Moroccan state-owned news provider SNRTNews reported today that prices of poultry in Casablanca markets reached MAD 23 per kilogram compared to MAD 17. Experts suggest that the notable change is due to the cancellation of the Eid al-Adha sacrifice ritual, which prompted a significant demand for poultry. In February, King Mohammed VI announced the cancellation of the sacrifice ritual, citing socio-economic challenges including drought. The climate challenges affected the livestock population, which saw a remarkable decrease. In response, the King stressed that the feast celebration could be enjoyed through performing Eid prayers and enjoying its spiritual significance, in addition to family visits and the atmosphere. Moroccans have in recent weeks taken to social media to comment on the high demand for meat products ahead of Eid Al Adha. This came as many Muslims are expected to enjoy the feast's culinary delicacies despite the absence of the sacrifice ritual. Some, however, have turned to buying fish and poultry products, as they fear that shops will be closed for weeks. Butchers traditionally close for several weeks during Eid Al Adha, knowing that most families have already secured more than enough meat through the sacrifice of goats or sheep. Butchers and markets selling poultry products have urged citizens to stock up on poultry provisions, warning against a similar scenario. Mohamed Aboud, president of the National Association of chicken farmers, told SNRTnews that the cancellation of the sacrifice ritual led many citizens to turn more heavily to poultry meat. He stressed that during Eid al-Adha, markets see a drop in demand for poultry initially. There is an exception this year, however, he said, noting that retail chicken prices now range between MAD 21 and 23 instead of their initial prices set at MAD 17. Mustapha Mountassir, president of the National Association of Poultry Meat Producers, echoed the same statement to the same source, noting that the price rise is due to demand outpacing supply. Eid al-Adha : Inmates can receive family visits but without meal baskets

On the occasion of Eid al-Adha, the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) announced that, starting the Monday following Eid, inmates in Moroccan penitentiaries will be allowed visits from family, friends, as well as representatives from diplomatic and consular missions for foreign detainees. However, these visits will not include the delivery of food parcels. Additionally, a special meal program will be provided to the inmates during this period, the Delegation stated in a press release on Wednesday. Given the deep religious and social significance of Eid al-Adha in Moroccan society, the celebration will take place within the prisons without performing the sacrificial ritual. This decision respects the royal directive to abstain from carrying out the Eid sacrifice, the statement added.

Italy Honors Royal Archives' Head for Promoting Morocco-Italy Cultural Dialogue

The Director of the Royal Archives of Morocco, Bahija Simou, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for her contribution to the promotion of heritage and Moroccan-Italian cultural dialogue. The insignia were presented to Simou by the Italy's Ambassador to Morocco Armando Barucco, on behalf of the President, on the occasion of Italy's National Day celebration. According to Barucco, this prestigious award—of which only ten are awarded each year—pays tribute to a remarkable and exceptional contribution to the promotion of Moroccan historical heritage, as well as to the significant development of scientific and cultural exchanges between Morocco and Italy. An internationally recognized historian, Simou has distinguished herself through her rigorous work on political and diplomatic relations between Morocco and Italy, as evidenced by numerous landmark publications. As a member of the Strategic Council of the Italian foundation Leonardo MedOr, Simou plays a key role in Euro-Mediterranean academic forums, actively working to preserve collective memory. On this occasion, she praised "the strong symbolism" of this award, emphasizing that her research on Italy highlights "the geopolitical importance of both Morocco and Italy within the Euro-Mediterranean space." She also recalled the historical depth of bilateral relations, which date back to the 12th century. After Italian unification, Morocco adopted a friendly stance toward Italy, which, following Morocco's independence, became one of the Kingdom's first economic partners. Italy was also the first European country visited by the late His Majesty Mohammed V. Simou noted that this award "does not only crown a personal journey, but also affirms a commitment to a living, inclusive history—one that resists oblivion and brings to light memories long kept in the shadows."
