Indian hurdler Yarraji undergoes surgery for ACL tear, doubtful for World Championships 2025
Yarraji, who won gold at the Asian Athletics Championships with a time of 12.96 seconds, had suffered an injury during a training session.
'I'm happy to share that this Friday, I successfully underwent a successful surgery to repair an ACL tear on my right knee with Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, she shared on Instagram.
'The past few weeks have been tough for me, as this injury has stopped me from doing what I love the most,' said Yarraji, who is now unlikely to feature in the World Championships later this year.
She remained in contention for a spot in the Worlds via ranking despite falling short of the automatic qualification mark of 12.73.
Currently ranked 12th among athletes eligible through the ranking quota, she would have needed to compete in more events before the August 24 deadline to maintain her position.

Reliance Foundation athlete Gulveer Singh added the 3000m national record to the 5000m and 10000m national records which already stand in his name in an imperious display on Tuesday (August 12). Gulveer clocked a time of 7:34.49s at the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest, a Continental Tour Gold meet to finish fifth. This was the first time that Gulveer was competing in this discipline in Europe. He broke Surendra Singh's record that had stood since 2008. Athletics, Gyulai Istvan Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix: Gulveer Singh obliterates his own NR in the men's 3000m at the WACT🥇level meet in Budapest with a timing of 7:34.49 mins.. Placed 5th in a very strong field Incredible performance from Gulveer yet again..👏🇮🇳💪 — Vishank Razdan (@VishankRazdan) August 12, 2025 Earlier this year, Gulveer Singh also pocketed the men's 3000m indoor national record and the Asian 5000m short track record at an athletics meet in Boston. In March 2025, Gulveer bettered his own men's 10,000m national record, clocking 27:00.22s at The Ten 2025 athletics meet. The 26-year-old shaved off 14.66 seconds to better his own national record of 27:14.88, which he set at the Hachioji Long Distance 2024 event in Japan. Coincidentally, Gulveer broke the 10000m national record for the first time at The Ten last year, finishing with a time of 27:41.81. This performance surpassed Surendra Singh's previous record of 28:02.89, which had stood since 2008. Gulveer later improved his record at the Hachioji Long Distance event in Japan. The Hangzhou Asian Games bronze medallist's time at The Ten, a World Athletics Continental Tour silver-level meet, was also agonisingly close to the automatic qualifying standard for the World Athletics Championships 2025, which stands at 27:00.00 – just 0.22 seconds faster than Gulveer's finish. However, he breached the entry standard for the Asian Athletics Championships 2025, which is set at 29.33.26s by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Top guns set for Asian Championship with Worlds in mind
CHENNAI: Indian shooters will be the centre of attention in the coming days. With the Asian Shooting Championship (ASC) in Kazakhstan knocking on the door, the country's elite shooters will be hoping to maintain their good season so far. More importantly, the event could act as a springboard ahead of the World Championships, which is scheduled to be held in Cairo in November. Currently fine-tuning their skills at the Dr Karni Shooting range in New Delhi, as many as 182 shooters from the country across rifle/pistol and shotgun categories (both Olympic and Non-Olympic events) are set to feature during the continental event. The Indians, who finished third during their most-recent assignment — the Munich World Cup in June — will be testing their skills against the cream of the sport in the continent. World Record holder Wang Zifei from China, who has had a season to remember so far, will be one of the top contenders. Suruchi Singh, Saurabh Chaudhary, Manu Bhaker, Mehuli Ghosh, Sift Kaur Samra, Chain Singh are some of the top guns from the country who'll be part of the competition which is scheduled to be held from August 16 to 30. "This is an important competition for us. We are looking forward to this. Things are looking good at the moment and this event will also act as a good preparation for the World Championships," Deepali Deshpande, national rifle head coach, assessed. The shooters have been part of the preparatory camp in the national capital since the start of August. The shooters had mostly done the hard work last month. The Delhi camp was predominantly about polishing their skills. "We had a productive camp last month in Dehradun. The range is new there and the weather was also much better as compared to Delhi. The shooters got a good opportunity to train. There was no pressure as there was no competition nearby. We focussed on all fronts including sports science and also worked on technical training. It was a step-by-step process," Deepali, who is in charge of the shooters from the rifle category, said. Reigning champion Akhil Sheoran, who will compete in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions, will be hoping to defend his crown while Sift will be aiming for the same, having captured silver in the last edition. The shooters will be leaving for the event in batches.
