
The Mesh Router Placement Strategy That Finally Gave Me Full Home Coverage
After years of testing mesh routers and traditional systems, one thing is clear: location matters. A central, elevated position with minimal obstructions delivers the strongest, most consistent Wi-Fi performance across your home. And while mesh systems give you more flexibility, placing nodes in the wrong spots—too close, too far, or near metal and concrete—can tank your speeds.
If you want faster downloads, smoother streaming, and fewer dead zones, don't guess. Here's how to optimize your router or mesh system placement for maximum internet speed and whole-home Wi-Fi coverage.
Still, location is everything when setting up your router and satellite extenders, which are also sometimes called nodes (or Points if you use Nest Wi-Fi). Their specific location significantly affects the system's performance. Internet is already expensive, with over 63% of US adults paying $195 or more on average, so if you've invested in a mesh router system, you should be getting the speeds you're paying for. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind as you go.
Where is the best location to place your mesh router?
Mesh routers and other Wi-Fi devices perform best when located out in the open and off the ground.

First, you'll want the main router, or the mesh device wired to your modem, to be located as centrally in your home as possible. That's the same approach you'd take with a single router, and the reasoning is the same: Routers put out Wi-Fi signals in all directions, so placing your router in a central location within your home will maximize your connection.
Locating local internet providers
That goes double for mesh systems, where the strength of the connection near your nodes will largely depend on the strength of the incoming signal from the main router. A stronger connection between the two will help ensure you're getting the fastest Wi-Fi speeds throughout your home.
Your options for moving the router might seem limited by the location of your modem and the incoming wiring for your home's internet connection, but an extra-long Ethernet cable can come in handy here, allowing you to move the router away from where the modem sits if necessary. If that's impractical or you'd prefer to keep the cables to a minimum, you'll at least want to move that main router out into the open, preferably as high off the ground as possible.

Move those extenders around
Once the main router is situated in the best spot possible, you'll want to pick out good spots for the extenders. With most systems, you can connect each device to the main router with an Ethernet cable for the fastest speeds possible, but most people prefer to connect everything wirelessly to reduce clutter. Since Wi-Fi is slower than Ethernet, you'll want to be extra strategic about where you place the extenders throughout your home.
Again, out in the open and off the ground is your best bet for a clear signal, but you'll also want to consider the layout of your home, as physical obstructions between the main router and the extenders can slow things down.
Generally speaking, a good rule of thumb is to try and keep the devices in your mesh setup no more than two rooms away from each other. The thickness and material of your walls can interfere with your Wi-Fi signal, especially if they're built with dense materials like brick or concrete, which can make it difficult for Wi-Fi signals to penetrate. You'll also want to watch out for electronic interference from TVs and other large appliances. If you're sticking a mesh extender in the kitchen, resist the urge to hide it on top of the fridge; move it away from your appliances altogether.
Most mesh systems come with apps that include placement guides, signal strength checks and other diagnostic tools to help you ensure everything is in the best spot possible.

Furniture can also block Wi-Fi signals, so if you have anything large or bulky between two of your mesh devices, consider relocating it. Aquariums are another classic antagonist for your mesh setup, as Wi-Fi has difficulty transmitting through water.
The best way to ensure that your mesh network is as well-connected as possible is to open its app and check the signal strength of each device, which is something most systems offer. You can also find system-specific guidance online at the links below:
Avoid these dead zones
If you've got a back corner of your home where the signal drops out, it might be tempting to stick a mesh extender smack in the middle of that dead zone to boost your speeds. In a lot of cases, that'd be a mistake.
Remember, like your phone or laptop, your mesh extenders need to connect wirelessly with the main router in your setup. If that back corner is a dead zone for your phone or laptop, it'll likely be a dead zone for your mesh extender too.
The better approach is to place that extender adjacent to the dead zone in a spot where it'll have an easier time connecting with the main router. In some cases, that might be halfway between the dead zone and the main router, but you might need to experiment a bit. Hit the sweet spot, and the Wi-Fi signal it puts out should be a healthy one, and one that'll extend into the dead zone to bring it back to life.
A speed test can help you see how your Wi-Fi is holding up from room to room.

Run a speed test
Apart from the diagnostic tools in your mesh router's app, the fastest way to check on your system's performance is to run speed tests. There are plenty of free services online that we recommend, any of which will tell you in a minute or less the upload and download speeds on whatever device you're using. However, our top recommendation is Ookla thanks to its consistency and reliability. This is also a tool that we often use to determine speeds offered by different internet providers. For the best intel, grab your laptop or phone and run multiple speed tests in each room of your house where you need a usable Wi-Fi signal. Ultimately, you should have a good ballpark sense of where speeds are the steadiest and where they dip. From there, you could try moving your extenders to try and balance things out, or you could consider buying an additional extender to fill in any gaps. Either way, your home should be all set with a strong signal wherever needed.

Other considerations for your mesh router
Just remember that your mesh router can only offer speeds that are as fast as what you're paying for from your ISP. If speeds are widely insufficient in your home, then it might be time to consider upgrading to a faster plan (and it might be worth seeing if your ISP will let you try a faster plan for a few days to see if that is, indeed, the problem). Your ISP might also be able to provide you with an updated modem that'll bring better, faster speeds to your mesh system to begin with. Can't hurt to ask.
If speeds still seem slower than you'd like, and your ISP isn't the answer, there are a few other things you can try. For starters, if your provider's modem is a gateway device that doubles as a router, you'll want to disable its Wi-Fi network so that it doesn't interfere with your mesh system's Wi-Fi network.
Speaking of interference, it's possible that a neighbor's Wi-Fi network is interfering with yours. To remedy that, hop into your mesh router's app and look for channel settings that let you tune your network to a different part of the Wi-Fi airwaves, potentially steering away from whatever channel nearby networks use. You'll also want to ensure that your mesh system's firmware is updates, which should be easy to check within its app.

Additionally, it supports the Apple Pencil USB-C and Apple Pencil First Generation, so you can also use it for taking notes, drawing, and more. Like all other iPads, the A16 model is very nicely built. It has a metal construction that is now iconic. It looks and feels great. And it comes in some really fun colors these days. Battery life stays the same at up to 10 hours, which isn't impressive anymore, but is still really good. While not an all-time low, the $299 discounted price gets pretty close to it. We've seen it go down to $279.99 in the past, but only once and for a hot second. A Single Poisoned Document Could Leak ‘Secret' Data Via ChatGPT
Aug 6, 2025 7:30 PM Security researchers found a weakness in OpenAI's Connectors, which let you hook up ChatGPT to other services, that allowed them to extract data from a Google Drive without any user interaction. OpenAI's ChatGPT can be linked to your Gmail inbox, allowed to inspect your GitHub code, or find appointments in your Microsoft calendar. But these connections have the potential to be abused—and researchers have shown it can take just a single 'poisoned' document to do so. New findings from security researchers Michael Bargury and Tamir Ishay Sharbat, revealed at the Black Hat hacker conference in Las Vegas today, show how a weakness in OpenAI's Connectors allowed sensitive information to be extracted from a Google Drive account using an indirect prompt injection attack. In a demonstration of the attack, dubbed AgentFlayer, Bargury shows how it was possible to extract developer secrets, in the form of API keys, that were stored in a demonstration Drive account. The vulnerability highlights how connecting AI models to external systems and sharing more data across them increases the potential attack surface for malicious hackers and potentially multiplies the ways where vulnerabilities may be introduced. 'There is nothing the user needs to do to be compromised, and there is nothing the user needs to do for the data to go out,' Bargury, the CTO at security firm Zenity, tells WIRED. 'We've shown this is completely zero-click; we just need your email, we share the document with you, and that's it. So yes, this is very, very bad,' Bargury says. OpenAI did not immediately respond to WIRED's request for comment about the vulnerability in Connectors. The company introduced Connectors for ChatGPT as a beta feature earlier this year, and its website lists at least 17 different services that can be linked up with its accounts. It says the system allows you to 'bring your tools and data into ChatGPT' and 'search files, pull live data, and reference content right in the chat.' Bargury says he reported the findings to OpenAI earlier this year and that the company quickly introduced mitigations to prevent the technique he used to extract data via Connectors. The way the attack works means only a limited amount of data could be extracted at once—full documents could not be removed as part of the attack. 'While this issue isn't specific to Google, it illustrates why developing robust protections against prompt injection attacks is important,' says Andy Wen, senior director of security product management at Google Workspace, pointing to the company's recently enhanced AI security measures. Bargury's attack starts with a poisoned document, which is shared to a potential victim's Google Drive. (Bargury says a victim could have also uploaded a compromised file to their own account.) Inside the document, which for the demonstration is a fictitious set of notes from a nonexistent meeting with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Bargury hid a 300-word malicious prompt that contains instructions for ChatGPT. The prompt is written in white text in a size-one font, something that a human is unlikely to see but a machine will still read. In a proof of concept video of the attack, Bargury shows the victim asking ChatGPT to 'summarize my last meeting with Sam,' although he says any user query related to a meeting summary will do. Instead, the hidden prompt tells the LLM that there was a 'mistake' and the document doesn't actually need to be summarized. The prompt says the person is actually a 'developer racing against a deadline' and they need the AI to search Google Drive for API keys and attach them to the end of a URL that is provided in the prompt. That URL is actually a command in the Markdown language to connect to an external server and pull in the image that is stored there. But as per the prompt's instructions, the URL now also contains the API keys the AI has found in the Google Drive account. Using Markdown to extract data from ChatGPT is not new. Independent security researcher Johann Rehberger has shown how data could be extracted this way, and described how OpenAI previously introduced a feature called 'url_safe' to detect if URLs were malicious and stop image rendering if they are dangerous. To get around this, Sharbat, an AI researcher at Zenity, writes in a blog post detailing the work, that the researchers used URLs from Microsoft's Azure Blob cloud storage. 'Our image has been successfully rendered, and we also get a very nice request log in our Azure Log Analytics which contains the victim's API keys,' the researcher writes. The attack is the latest demonstration of how indirect prompt injections can impact generative AI systems. Indirect prompt injections involve attackers feeding an LLM poisoned data that can tell the system to complete malicious actions. This week, a group of researchers showed how indirect prompt injections could be used to hijack a smart home system, activating a smart home's lights and boiler remotely. While indirect prompt injections have been around almost as long as ChatGPT has, security researchers worry that as more and more systems are connected to LLMs, there is an increased risk of attackers inserting 'untrusted' data into them. Getting access to sensitive data could also allow malicious hackers a way into an organization's other systems. Bargury says that hooking up LLMs to external data sources means they will be more capable and increase their utility, but that comes with challenges. 'It's incredibly powerful, but as usual with AI, more power comes with more risk,' Bargury says.

Until then, here are some key insights from the last results: AMD & Super Micro: Trump's trade policy is hitting the semiconductor sector What happened: Advanced Micro Devices and Super Micro Computer both reported earnings for the second quarter on Tuesday, with mixed results. AMD beat on revenue, but missed earnings estimates slightly. The chipmaker posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.48, a hair below the expected $0.49 a share. Lisa Su, AMD's CEO, said the firm's AI revenue declined on a year-over-year basis largely due to US export restrictions, which have prevented AMD from selling its MI308 AI chip to China. Shares were down as much as 8% on Wednesday. Super Micro, meanwhile, missed slightly on both earnings and revenue. The chipmaker said revenue came in at $5.76 billion, below the expected $5.89 billion, and earnings per share came in at $0.41, below the $0.44 Wall Street expected. The miss was partly fueled by the impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs, Charles Liang, the CEO, said on a call with analysts on Tuesday. Shares of the chipmaker were down 17% after the results. The US and China have until August 12 to strike a trade deal before higher tariffs kick in, another headwind that could rattle the market and semiconductor stocks in particular. "Industry-wide tariff impact is only now being felt and could result in headwinds for the entire semiconductor industry," Gadjo Sevilla, a senior analyst at EMARKETER, wrote in a note. McDonald's: US consumers are in a precarious position What happened: McDonald's beat on earnings and revenue expectations for the quarter, but voiced concerns about the health of lower-income consumers and the ability of Americans to keep spending. The fast food franchise said revenue came in at $6.84 billion for the quarter, above the $6.7 billion analysts expected. Earnings per share came in at an adjusted $3.19, above estimates of $3.15. "Re-engaging the low-income consumer is critical," Chris Kempczinski, the CEO, said on the company's earnings call, adding that low-income Americans were more likely to visit the chain than other income groups. "This bifurcated consumer base is why we remain cautious about the overall near-term health of the US consumer." What it means: Consumer spending is in focus for retail giants and for Wall Street, given the cumulative effects of inflation in recent years and Trump's tariffs. Economists say tariffs could stoke inflation, as companies can pass along the cost of import duties to consumers. For now, though spending remains fairly strong, even as concerns have risen recently around a pullback among both high and low-income households. Palantir: Hype for AI still strong What happened: Palantir blew past estimates for second quarter earnings. The data software firm revealed that its revenue surpassed $1 billion for the first time, reflecting a 55% year-over-year increase. Shares popped as much as 10% after its results, bringing the stock up 130% year-to-date. What it means: The AI trade is alive and well, with firms still benefitting from the hype for artificial intelligence. Wedbush Securities called Palantir the "Messi of AI" in a note to clients shortly after the firm reported earnings. In a separate note, analysts lifted their price target for the stock to $200 a share, implying 15% upside from current levels. "Palantir remains one of our top tech names to own in 2025 and this deal represents another opportunity for PLTR to capitalize on while continuing to generate unprecedented traction for its entire portfolio across the federal and commercial landscapes," analysts said. Microsoft and Meta: Mega-cap tech still dominates What happened: Microsoft and Meta both beat on earnings last week. Microsoft took in $76.4 billion in revenue and $3.65 in earnings per share, above estimates of $73.8 billion and $3.37 a share. The company also joined the $4 trillion club for the first time as its stock surged following its earnings report, with shares up 26% year-to-date. Meta, meanwhile, took in $47.5 billion in revenue and $7.14 in earnings per share, above estimates of $44.83 billion and $5.89 a share. The stock is up 27% year-to-date. What it means: Mega-cap tech is still dominating the market. Tech was best-performing area of the S&P 500 in July, with the sector up 5% in the month. The Nasdaq hit 14 record highs in July, causing Deutsche Bank to declare that "tech-ceptionalism" has resumed for the market. The strong outperformance of large-cap stocks accelerated, further widening the gap between small-cap peers. "We continue to favor US large cap Tech over its small cap counterpart, as it takes a highly speculative market (i.e. 2021) or Big Tech to fall out of favor (i.e. 2022, Q4 2024) for the latter to outperform," Nicholas Colas, the co-founder of the research firm DataTrek, wrote in a note.
