Death Valley: does it deserve a welcome in the hillsides?
I can imagine the pitch meeting only too well.
'So, what do you have for us?'
'A murder mystery.'
'Sounds quirky. Always risky, quirky, when dealing with death. Unless it's Only Murders in the Building, that's genius. Is it like Only Murders in the Building?'
'Well, the central character is a retired actor who used to play a detective on TV, and he solves cases with a kooky young woman Detective Sergeant, so it is a bit like Only Murders.'
'Kooky. That's as bad as quirky. Where's it set?'
'Vale of Glamorgan, hence Death Valley. Plenty of local actors involved, including Steffan Rhodri, aka Dave Coaches from Gavin and Stacey, and Gwen from Gavin and Stacey plays the mum of the young woman DS.'
'Gavin and Stacey, eh? That's more promising, but I still think it would be more at home in a sleepy afternoon slot rather than Sunday evening. So sorry, it's a no.'
'Did I mention we've got Timothy Spall, bona fide national treasure, lined up to play the retired telly detective?'
'Talk about burying the lead, mate! We'll have six episodes and don't stint on the scenery.'
Given the series' reliance on Spall, the first episode takes too long to introduce his character. Police have been called to the home of a property developer who appears to have shot himself. As forensics officers gather evidence, there's a telly on in the background showing old re-runs of Caesar, starring John Chapel (Spall) as the crime-cracking supremo with a literary bent.
Turns out Chapel lives in the village, and the officer in charge of the shooting investigation, DS Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth), is his number one fan. But Chapel is a recluse and doesn't want to help. Then he does want to help, but now Mallowan has cooled on the idea of having a civilian involved.
In short, a monumental amount of faffing goes on before we can get down to business, by which time the Janie character has become seriously annoying. It is a pity because under other circumstances, Kirstie Allsopp-lookalike Keyworth would be a likeable sort. And perhaps the gentle humour would land better. Are jokes about star signs still a thing?
Spall is incapable of a duff performance, and his delightfully hammy Chapel/Caesar is reason enough to keep watching. But national treasure or not, the national patience has its limits.
With the full series on iPlayer now, the better news for writer Paul Doolan is that Death Valley settles down and starts to grow on you, and a couple of starry guest appearances liven things up no end. This, however, was a patchy start.
One of the highlights of the weekend (apart from the Bob Servant night on BBC4 on Saturday), was the documentary Liza: a Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story. The 101-minute film lived up to its title, with the standout turn Mia Farrow passing judgment on all who had crossed Minnelli's path, for good and ill. A portrait of Farrow next, please.

Selena Gomez Just Teased Her Bridal Style
Congratulations are in order for a bunch of Hollywood A-listers. Georgina Rodriguez just said 'yes' to Cristiano Ronaldo's jaw dropping proposal, Charli XCX has officially tied the knot with The 1975's drummer George Daniel, and now, we're counting down the days until Selena Gomez walks down the aisle to become Mrs. Benny Blanco. The Only Murders in the Building star announced her engagement to the singer-songwriter last December with an Instagram post captioned 'forever begins now'. Over the weekend, Gomez hosted the launch party for Rare Beauty's debut Eau de Parfum - a milestone moment in her new beauty empire - and while the fragrance may have been the star of the evening, her outfit was impossible to ignore. Dressed in a white, fringed Cult Gaia gown with a slinky silhouette and light shimmer, she subtly semaphored 'bride'. The dress paired with Cult Gaia's signature bamboo-heeled sandals and silver earrings felt like it could easily transition from fragrance fête to rehearsal dinner. ©@selenagomez, JC Olivera, Jess Albano It's worth noting that Selena's style often leans into approachable high-low dressing. Think Mango co-ords, sleek leather boots, and Missoma jewellery, making her choice of such an iridescent dress all the more telling. Modern bridal fashion often involves an entire wardrobe of white looks from courthouse chic to afterparty sparkle, and stars like Charli XCX have embraced the idea ofre-wearing bridal-adjacent outfits, who recently recycled her afterparty dress from the We Love Green festival in France. Selena's launch party look could very well be part of that same multi-outfit-multi-purpose narrative. With her September nuptials reportedly on the horizon, every public appearance doubles as a potential style clue. If this Cult Gaia moment is anything to go by, we may have just caught our first glimpse of the bridal energy she'll be serving on the big day and it's as polished, playful, and cool as you'd expect. 1. EastEnders legend disowned by entire family in early BBC iPlayer release
This article contains spoilers for tonight's episode of EastEnders, which airs on BBC One at 7.30pm or can be streamed now on iPlayer. The floor has fallen from beneath Suki Panesar-Unwin's (Balvinder Sopal) feet as Avani Nandra-Hart's (Aaliyah James) pregnancy was exposed to their family. It's been a whirlwind few weeks, ever since Avani got a positive test and confided in best mate Barney Mitchell (Lewis Bridgeman) about her desire to have an abortion. She was terrified by the prospect of raising twisted Joel Marshall's (Max Murray) child, but her attempts at researching a clinic were spotted by Suki. Despite asserting that it could be Avani's only chance to have a child, the teen remained firm on her decision, and was prepared to open up to mum Priya (Sophie Khan Levy) and dad Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) about her ordeal. However, at the abortion clinic, Suki dealt a troubling offer – she would raise the child alongside wife Eve (Heather Peace), despite not consulting her about the matter. When Eve found out, she was furious but eventually warmed to the idea of being a parent, something she hadn't considered before. However, she could also see how much the pregnancy was already starting to have an impact on Avani's physical and mental health. She knew that Suki was pressuring her into giving birth, and wanted the decision to be Avani's. After a heart to heart, she had an abortion. The two then revealed all to an enraged Ravi and Priya – just as Suki walked in. In today's episode, Ravi implored his daughter to tell him who the father was – though Priya knew what problems that could cause and reassured their daughter that Joel needn't know if she didn't want him to. Suki desperately tried to build bridges with her family, telling Ravi that she was prepared to remortgage the Slaters' house to pay off the debts he owed at Walford East. But for once, Ravi was speechless. He had absolutely nothing to say to his step-mother, other than comparing her to his wicked, late father Nish (Navin Chowdhry). Regardless of Suki's offer, it seemed to be too late as an order to wind up the restaurant had already been issued. She then tried to turn the tables on Eve, saying that it was irresponsible of her to take a child to have such a major procedure without her parents' knowledge. Avani recently celebrated her 16th birthday on screen. She had lavish ideas for her party, which Ravi promised her despite his monetary issues. When Kojo Asare (Dayo Koleosho) flushed 50k worth of drugs that Ravi planned to deal down the loo, Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) stepped in with some damage control. He promised Ravi that Avani could have exclusive use of the nightclub – something which seemed to work. However, that night, Ravi told Harry that he had to repay his debts by pushing the narcotics on his behalf. Despite Avani being 16, actress Aaliyah James is a lot older. She turned 25 on 26th June. In response to Suki's desperation, Priya swanned into the room and slapped her, branding her 'poison'. She then chased after Ravi, who was on the warpath to find Joel. In their absence, Avani began to bleed, and Suki had to take her to the hospital. There, she confessed that she felt her ill health was a punishment from God for having a termination. Meanwhile, a blissfully unaware Ravi launched a verbal attack on Joel. When his dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) suggested that Avani may have slept with someone else – or multiple people – Ravi saw red. Ross' only saving grace was the fact news reached Priya that Avani had been hospitalised, and the two left. Later, Joel branded her 'weak and stupid' for making the decision without him. At the end of the day, Suki came home and found Eve, son Vinny (Shiv Jalota) and grandson Nugget (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury) packing their bags and leaving. They were so disgusted by her behaviour that they couldn't bare to be under the same roof. For Eve, she said that Suki had opened her up to the hurt of believing that she could one day be a mother, and she doesn't know what they have left in their marriage. Is this the end of Sukeve, and what will Suki do without her family? This could well be leading up to somewhat of an absence for Suki, in the wake of losing her clan? We know that Balvinder Sopal is heading to the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom this autumn, though she has confirmed that she will still be in Albert Square.
