The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced an 18-member squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England. Shreyas Iyer was one of the most surprising omissions as he was expected to make the side with Virat Kohli now retired from the longest format. Iyer was expected to be a part of the middle order.
When asked about Iyer's exclusion, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir responded by saying, 'Main selector nahi hoon' (I am not a selector). But this comment didn't go well with many, including former India cricketer Atul Wassan. 'Gambhir doesn't select players; he only rejects,' Wassan said on OTT Play while taking a dig at Gambhir's remark.

Wassan explained that the coach always has some role in team selection and that selectors usually listen to the coach's opinion before finalising the squad. 'The coach has a role in team selection, and selectors also listen to them before naming the squad,' Wassan said.
Wassan, however, added that Gambhir deserves to select players on gut feeling because he is the coach right now. 'If Gambhir has been given this position, then I think he deserves to go with his feeling, whether it's right or wrong.'
Iyer's exclusion also became a hot topic on social media. Many fans and experts have criticised the decision and questioned if it was really based on performance or something else. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar recently said that the current leadership group picks players based on their own instincts rather than performance.
'Under Gambhir's stewardship and with Rohit not there anymore, I see a tendency in this management to pre-empt performances of individuals while making selections. As in, the dominating thought here is to apply their own view of the likely success and failure of players depending on conditions and opposition,' Manjrekar was quoted as saying by The Hindustan Times.
Manjrekar cited the example of Sarfaraz Khan, who was not selected in the playing XI after three-four poor games last year. He was taken to Australia but did not play a match there and now he has b been dropped from the team altogether.
'Take the example of Sarfraz Khan. Three fifties and a 150 at home in four Tests and failures in only four innings after that and Sarfaraz does not get a single game in Australia. For the England tour too, he has been left out despite his performances in recent times outweighing Karun Nair's completely. So, this non-selection is not about performance, it's about someone important in the leadership group thinking Sarfaraz will not get runs in England and Australia, and Karun Nair will,' he said.

Virat Kohli Asked To Reconsider Test Retirement Once Again: "Given The Fitness..."

Virat Kohli announced a shocking Test retirement last month. After a poor series in Australia, the player decided not to play the format anymore. Though he took a time of around four months before coming to the decision. Former BCCI treasurer and current chairman of Indian Premier League Arun Dhumal wants Kohli to reconsider his decision of Test retirement. Kohli's IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru has made it to the final of the 2025 season and Dhumal wants that Kohli should not retire even if his side wins the trophy. When asked if Kohli would retire if RCB win the title, Dhumal told PTI: "See neither do I think that, nor do I hope that." "Virat is the greatest ambassador for the sport (of cricket). And the kind of commitment he has shown over the last 18 editions, I would say Virat is to cricket what (Novak) Djokovic or Roger Federer is to tennis. So I would want him to continue playing IPL and I would rather want him to reconsider his decision of retirement from Test cricket. "Given the fitness that Virat has, he is probably fitter now than he was in the first season, after playing 18 editions of the IPL. And he still comes back with the same kind of energy and commitment to the game. Given his dedication in the first season and the next 17, he is going to come back with the same aggression and commitment. Even if RCB win, I would, and the whole country would want Virat to continue." RCB made it to the final of IPL 2025 after outplaying Punjab Kings by 8 wickets in Qualifier 1 game in Mullanpur. This is the fourth final that the side will be playing in the history of IPL. RCB are still in quest for a maiden title. They lost all the previous finals in 2009, 2011 and 2016. Internet calls Magnus Carlsen 'sore loser' for slamming table during loss to Gukesh at Norway Chess 2025: 'Pathetic behaviour'

In a dramatic sixth-round clash at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament, World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh pulled off a remarkable win over former champion and top-ranked Magnus Carlsen. This marks Gukesh's first-ever classical win against Carlsen, levelling their head-to-head score in the tournament at 1-1. The match saw Gukesh on the defensive for most of the game, but he showed incredible grit, holding on despite being in a clearly lost position. As Carlsen fell into time trouble, the game took a turn. A rare blunder from Carlsen gave Gukesh a slim opening, and the young champion didn't miss. He played accurately and calmly to convert the position into a win, sealing a historic moment in his career. Just a lucky day: Gukesh after defeating Mangus Carlsen Despite the importance of the win, Gukesh remained humble in his post-game comments. 'Well, there wasn't much I could really do; it was just clearly lost, so I was trying to make moves which kind of were tricky for him, and luckily he got into a time scramble,' the 19-year-old said. 'Yeah, one thing I learned from this tournament is that time scrambles can be too much out of control. 99 out of 100 times, I would lose. Just a lucky day!' He added, 'First classical win against Magnus—I mean, not the way I wanted it to be—but okay, I'll take it.' Gukesh:"99 out of 100 times I would lose. Just a lucky day!""First classical win against Magnus, I mean, not the way I wanted it to be, but okay I'll take it."#NorwayChess Magnus slammed the table in frustration But what captured attention online wasn't just the result; it was Magnus Carlsen's frustrated reaction to his loss. Carlsen, who has been openly critical of Gukesh's classical play in the past, especially under time pressure, looked visibly shaken after the loss. Shortly after being defeated by Gukesh, he was caught on camera slamming the table and offering what many interpreted as a reluctant fist bump. While he was soon seen shaking hands with Gukesh and patting his back, seemingly congratulating the Indian prodigy for his win, many found his table-slam moment in poor taste. The moment quickly went viral, with fans calling out the chess legend for poor sportsmanship. GUKESH BEATS MAGNUS CARLSEN. 🇮🇳- The frustration from Magnus after the defeat. 😲 Internet reacts: 'Magnus should've handled this with grace' Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was quick to react to the scene. Many praised Gukesh's calm demeanour and criticised Carlsen's apparent frustration. One user wrote, 'This is probably the biggest moment of Gukesh's life, and this pathetic behaviour by the world's No.1 is just disappointing. Magnus should've handled this with grace.' This is probably the biggest moment of Gukesh's life and this pathetic behaviour by the World's no1 is just disappointing. Magnus should've handled this with grace. Another said, 'This should not be allowed! Chess federation should address this issue.' This should not be allowed! Chess federation should address this issue. The reactions didn't stop there. Several fans took the opportunity to point out what they felt was a pattern in Carlsen's behaviour when things don't go his way. One user wrote, 'He doesn't think that Gukesh deserves to be world champion and that arrogance came out when he lost to him.' @Trollerguy1377 He doesn't think that gukesh deserves to be world champion and that arrogance came out when he lost to him. Another added, 'I am getting tired of Magnus's antics. After a loss, at least congratulate your opponent properly. What is this with banging the table?' They also referenced past criticisms of the world championship format and suggestions that Gukesh didn't truly earn the title. I am getting tired of Magnus's antics and after a loss at least congratulate your opponent properly. What is this with banging of the table? These men questioned the legitimacy of Gukesh's win at World championship, questioned the chess format user in World championship and to... While the chess world continues to debate Carlsen's sportsmanship, Gukesh continues to build his legacy, proving he's World Champion for a reason.
