Los Angeles (dpa) Authorities have declared the entire downtown Los Angeles area an "unlawful assembly" zone after a third consecutive day of clashes between protesters and law enforcement, sparked by the crackdown on immigration ordered by US President Donald Trump."You are to leave the area immediately," the Los Angeles police department (LAPD) wrote on X in the early hours of Monday. Over the weekend, 56 people were arrested in connection with the ongoing protests, according to police reports.
Police chief Jim McDonnell was quoted by US media as announcing that "the number of arrests so far is nothing compared to what is yet to come."

On Sunday, tensions spiked dramatically following Trump's order to deploy the National Guard and, controversially, mobilise regular military forces - despite opposition from local officials.Thousands of protesters flooded the streets in response to the unprecedented deployment. Law enforcement responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash bangs in an effort to disperse the crowds. However, the rest of the sprawling metropolis reportedly continued to function largely as normal, aside from isolated pockets of unrest in the downtown area. The protests began on Friday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers executed search warrants across the city as US President Donald Trump pushed forward with his goal of mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused the Trump administration of deliberately provoking the escalation and acting unlawfully in an effort to portray the president as a strongman leader.
The Democratic governor announced that the state would file a lawsuit against the federal government.

'We were kidnapped': Greta Thunberg gives first comment after Israel seized Gaza aid boat

Greta Thunberg on Tuesday accused Israel of kidnapping her and her fellow pro-Palestinian activists in international waters, saying she declined to sign a document stating she entered the country illegally prior to being deported. Speaking in the arrivals section of Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport after being deported from Israel, the Swedish activist said she and her team had broken no laws, and called for the immediate release of the activists still in Israel. "I was very clear in my testimony that we were kidnapped on international waters and brought against our own will into Israel," she said. She laughed off criticism from US President Donald Trump, who had described her as an angry person, saying: "I think the world needs a lot more young angry women to be honest, especially with everything going on right now." Thunberg, 22, arrived in Paris a day after the Israeli navy prevented her and a group of fellow pro-Palestinian activists from sailing to Gaza. Israeli forces boarded the charity vessel as it neared Gaza early on Monday, trying to break through a years-old naval blockade of the coastal enclave, and seized the 12-strong crew, including Thunberg. Thunberg denied her mission to deliver aid to Gaza by breaking through a years-old naval blockade of the coastal enclave was a PR stunt, saying a previous effort in a larger boat was ended after the vessel was bombed. She said she was now in desperate need of a shower and sleep. She admitted it was unclear where she would be heading next, telling reporters it could be Sweden.

Iranian lawmakers accuse US and Israel of planning nuclear talks trap

The United States and Israel are seeking to turn nuclear talks into a "strategic trap" for Iran, Iranian lawmakers said in a statement on Tuesday, days before a planned sixth round of Iran-US nuclear talks. "The US is not serious in negotiations at all. It has set the goal of talks as imposing its demands and has adopted offensive positions that are diametrically opposed to Iranians' inalienable rights," the statement from parliamentarians said. US President Donald Trump highlighted on Monday that the two sides remained at odds on the issue of uranium enrichment in Iran, which Iranian lawmakers say is a non-negotiable part of the country's nuclear programme. While Trump said the next round of talks would take place on Thursday, Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson said it was planned to take place on Sunday in Oman. Iran is to share a counterproposal to a US offer for a nuclear deal, which it says is not acceptable considering its position on enrichment and lack of detail on the lifting of sanctions. "The only acceptable deal is one that permanently lifts all sanctions with the aim of achieving economic benefits for Iran," lawmakers added in their statement.

VIDEO: Like Biden, Trump stumbles while boarding Air Force One

Former US President Donald Trump, 78, stumbled while climbing the stairs of Air Force One in New Jersey, in a scene reminiscent of former President Joe Biden's well-documented missteps on the same staircase. The incident occurred after Trump spoke to reporters. While ascending the steps to his presidential aircraft, he appeared to lose his footing briefly but managed to steady himself and continue the climb. At the top of the stairs, he turned to the media and raised his signature fist — a symbolic gesture signaling that everything was fine. Some commentators noted that Trump seemed to be dragging his feet, speculating that he might have been experiencing fatigue. During his time in office, President Biden has stumbled on multiple occasions while boarding Air Force One, prompting questions about his health and physical fitness. Trump has previously mocked Biden for those incidents — most notably in 2021, when Biden stumbled three times while climbing the aircraft's stairs — using them as a point of criticism during speeches and interviews.
