Illegal dog fighting busted, dogs rescued in La Paz
According to Jonathan Andal's report in '24 Oras' on Monday, authorities raided the arena by virtue of a search warrant following a tip provided by an informant. The police also arrested the person running the dog fight a certain alias "Akira."
With the joint forces from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Organized Crime Unit, Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), and the Animal Welfare Investigation Project (AWIP), three dogs were rescued in the raid.
Seven puppies were initially rescued after authorities bought them from the suspect to gian his trust. The puppies that are about eight-weeks old, were being trained for fighting, the report said.
'Pinapakagat nila 'yung tuta sa malalaking aso para maging mas ano 'to, mas wild, mas maging agresibo 'yung tuta habang lumalaki…nai-immune na siya sa mga kagat-kagat. Tapos pinapalo-palo nila,' said PAOCC executive director Gilbert Cruz.
(They let bigger dogs bite the puppies as part of their training to make them become wild and aggressive as they grow up…They also beat the puppies.)
'Generally, what happens is that they will use, for example, weighted collars, they will use poles with something on the end of it to train these dogs and condition these dogs. Generally, conditioning is for a long period of time. In this case, however, the individual just wanted to get to a fight. This is very, very unacceptable,' said Jacob Lloyd of AWIP.
Authorities also seized items used to train the dogs such as improvised wooden bite sticks, weighted collars, training pole, fight cage, healing oil, and other medicines for dogs.
The PAOCC is now investigating where the illegal dog fight is being streamed online as there are reportedly foreign bettors.
'Hindi lang peso ang pustahan diyan. Talagang may pumupusta ng mga dollars diyan o depende kung saang bansa,' said Cruz.
(The bets are not only in peso. There were people betting in dollars or other currencies depending on what country they are from.)
The rescued dogs are now under the care of the AWIP.
The suspect is detained at the PNP Criminal Investigation Detection Group for violation of the Animal Welfare Act. GMA Integrated News is trying to reach him out for comment.
Meanwhile, PAOCC will also run after other individuals behind the dog fight. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BAP, GMA Integrated News

Miss Gay winner stabbed 13 times in Lipa
A member of the LGBTQ community was killed after he was stabbed 13 times in Lipa City, Batangas. According to Nico Waje's report on "24 Oras," it was just in June when 25-year-old Jericho Elliorate won the Miss Gay title in Barangay Sampat in Tanauan. He was killed after midnight on Saturday after a get-together with friends who were also deaf. Investigation showed that it was during the party that he met the suspect, who invited him to go somewhere else. CCTV footage showed Jericho and the suspect alighting from a tricycle. The video didn't capture the actual stabbing, but it caught the suspect leaving and returning to the crime scene to take the victim's wallet. The CCTV led to the arrest of the suspect, who would not give any comment. Police said the suspect allegedly got upset because the victim touched him. "Hindi po kami naniniwala na hinipuan niya yung lalaki. Opo bakla po siya pero sensitive po siya. 'Yung lokohin nga po siya sa ibang lalaki nagagalit po siya e," the victim's sister Janine said. "Wala po akong masabi napakabait po ng anak ko. Wala po akong masabi diyan," his mother added. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Crime rate down 7.75% over 10-month period — PNP chief Torre
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said Tuesday the country's crime rate went down 7.75% from August 2024 to June 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year. In his speech during the 124th Police Service Anniversary celebration at Camp Crame attended by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., Torre said the number of crime incidents decreased from 192,677 to 177,735. "Crime incidents dropped by 7.75% with a total of 177,735 incidents from August 2024 to June 2025 compared to 192,677 from the same period of previous year," Torre said. "This significant decline clearly reflects the effectiveness of our intensified anti-criminality operations, especially our increased police presence across the country," he added. In the drive against illegal drugs, Torre said a total of 153,609 operations have been conducted from July 1, 2022 to August 10, 2025. Anti-drug operations resulted in 190,568 arrests and confiscation of contraband worth some P54.6 billion, according to Torre. "This represents a 258% increase compared to the same period of 2016 to 2019. A testament to our bloodless campaign that decisively targets both high-value and street-level offenders," Torre said. Torre said the PNP is also seeking to address cyber crimes, human trafficking, kidnapping, and even fake news. With regard to internal cleansing, Torre said that over the past year, a total of 3,413 members of its personnel were sanctioned. Under the PNP's newly implemented Five-Minute Response Policy, Torre said police responded to 94% of the 3,574 emergency calls within five minutes from June 2 to August 10. "As we mark our 124th year, the question before us is not what have we done? But what more can we do?" Torre said. "As the Chief of the Philippine National Police, I call on every officer and personnel to continue embodying the true spirit of public service. Let us be the police force that people not only respect but truly trust," he added. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: Walang lugar ang katiwalian sa kapulisan
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Tuesday vowed that his administration would never condone wrongdoings among police ranks, noting that rogue cops will be dealt with in accordance with the law. During the 124th Police Service Anniversary held at the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame, Marcos said part of the threat to national security are the police officers who had committed wrongdoings and abuse of power. ''Huwag din natin kalimutan na bahagi ng banta sa seguridad ang mga nasa hanay na bumabaluktot mismo ng ating layunin. Aanhin pa ang pinakamodernong kagamitan kung may ilang pulis pa rin ang umaabuso sa kapangyarihan?'' Marcos said during the 124th Police Service Anniversary. (Let us not forget that part of the security threats are the rouge cops who do not abide by their duty. What is the use of the most modern assets if there are some police scalawags?) ''We will continue to investigate and hold these people accountable within the bounds of the law. We do not condone wrongdoings among those who are sworn to uphold the law and to protect the citizens of our Republic. Inuulit ko, walang lugar ang katiwalian sa ating kapulisan (I repeat, corruption has no place in the police force),'' he added. Though the rate of crime incidents had gone down, Marcos said the figure alone could not allay public fear. He said the number of crime incidents from June 2024 to June 2025 decreased as compared to the preceding period. ''As public servants, we do not ask people to celebrate statistics if their experiences tell a different story,'' Marcos said. ''We must regain the trust of the public through more decisive and responsive actions. I believe the PNP is now on its right track,'' the President said. Further, Marcos said the government would continue to modernize the PNP as criminals, at present, use technology for their illegal schemes. So far, the police force has drones and other advanced technologies that complement police operations, enabling the cops' capabilities to protect, to monitor, and to respond with greater precision. ''But technology will never replace the importance of your presence on the ground. These tools are only effective as the men and women who wield those tools,'' Marcos said. ''Be assured that the government stands with you, behind you all – every hour of every day – as you continue to carry out your mission and build a safer and more peaceful Bagong Pilipinas,'' he added. —KG, GMA Integrated News
