Voice of Oklahoma Football's biggest questions for the Sooners
The top of his list is probably the same as most people's: How do the pieces fit on the offensive line? Oklahoma was atrocious up front last year, finishing in a tie for last in sacks allowed, giving up 50.
"Not good at all a year ago, the o-line has been fortified, but where do the pieces fit?" Rowland said.
Most of the pieces from last year remain, though highly-touted freshmen Michael Fasusi and Ryan Fodje have been added to the mix. As to whether either freshmen are ready to start in the SEC, that's part of the question. The Sooners also brought in Derek Simmons from the transfer portal. Simmons didn't allow a sack last year, though that came playing at FCS Western Carolina. He's performed well in games against Arkansas and NC State over the last couple of years. He's penciled in as the likeliest starter at right tackle.
Rowland's second question is a matter of who steps up behind Deion Burks, who is firmly entrenched as the team's No. 1 wide receiver.
Arkansas transfer Isaiah Sategna earned plaudits from coaches upon arrival, and he caught 37 passes for the Razorbacks last year as a sophomore. Arkansas-Pine Bluff transfer Javonnie Gibson would likely step into a starting role if not for injury, leaving his immediate availability in doubt.
Injury was OU's bugaboo at the position last year.
"Keep the wideouts healthy," Rowland said. "We don't need to remind anyone of the disaster that room turned into a year ago."
Finally, the question of tight end ranked third. Not the most important position on the roster, but one Oklahoma would prefer to utilize more than it currently looks based on the roster makeup.
"This is the position that carries the most doubt going into the fall," Rowland said.
The most likely options are Kaden Helms, with his three career receptions, FCS transfer Carson Kent from Kennesaw State, Division II transfer Will Huggins from Pittsburg State, or converted linebacker Jaren Kanak. Not necessarily a blue-chip group to work with but the Sooners are simply hoping the tight end position provides a net positive to the offense in 2025.
That none of the biggest questions for this team are on the defensive side of the ball is encouraging, but the offense led by John Mateer and Jaydn Ott has a lot to prove in 2025.
Oklahoma begins its season August 30 against FCS Illinois State before Michigan visits Norman in Week 2.

Broncos roster: LB Drew Sanders (No. 41) competing for role on defense
Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at third-year linebacker Drew Sanders, No. 41. Before the : Sanders (6-5, 233 pounds) played in the SEC for the entirety of his college career. Sanders played two years at Alabama from 2020-21, and he knows what it means to come out on top; Sanders won a national championship with the Crimson Tide in 2020. In two years at Alabama, Sanders played in 23 games, recording 33 total tackles (16 solo, 17 assisted, three tackles for loss), three pass deflections and 1.0 sacks. Sanders transferred to Arkansas prior to 2022, and he immediately exploded in production. In 12 games with the Razorbacks, Sanders made 103 total tackles (40 solo, 63 assisted, 14 tackles for loss), 9.5 sacks, five pass deflections, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception. Sanders' breakout season in 2022 caught the eye of the Denver Broncos, who selected Sanders in the third round (67th overall) of the 2023 NFL draft. Broncos tenure: Sanders dressed for all 17 games in 2023, making four starts, totaling 24 total tackles (13 solo, 11 assisted, one tackle for loss) and one fumble recovery. After missing the beginning of the 2024 season while recovering from an Achilles injury, Sanders returned late in the year and appeared in four games (plus the Broncos' lone playoff game). In limited action, Sanders recorded eight tackles (four solo, four assisted, one tackle for loss) and 1.0 sacks in 2024. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Near certain. Earlier this year, coach Sean Payton specifically referenced Sanders as an "inside linebacker," giving him some position clarity after bouncing between roles over the last two years. The Broncos brought in Dre Greenlaw this spring, but Sanders will still get an opportunity to compete for significant playing time as Alex Singleton is coming off a torn ACL and will turn 32 this season. Sanders isn't a lock to start, but he feels likely to make the active roster and have a key role in 2025. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans. Where does Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium rank among College Football's best?
The SEC is home to some of the best college football venues in the sport. When OU and Texas made the move to the SEC back in 2024, they moved into a super-sized league. Texas had the largest capacity, and Oklahoma was No. 2 in the old Big 12. But now, they're in good company with some fantastic home environments. In a league that coined the phrase, "It just means more," the SEC puts that on display every Saturday on college campuses. The SEC is home to 11 of the top 20 stadium capacities in college football, which makes those gameday atmospheres incredible to witness. Oklahoma's Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium is the home to one of the blue bloods of college football and the backdrop for some of the best players to ever play the game. But where does GFOMS rank among the best stadiums in college football? USA TODAY Sports college football writers Blake Toppermeyer and Paul Myerburg ranked the top 25 stadiums in college football, and OU's home field came in at 11. A touch smaller than other SEC colossuses with a capacity of 80,126, the "Palace on the Prairie" still more than holds its own. (Seven national title banners hanging inside help deliver that message.) The Sooner Schooner cruising the field paints a scene fit for one of the nation's premier football conferences. - USA TODAY Sports The Oklahoma Sooners have won seven national championships and seven Heisman Trophy winners. They've won a lot of games in Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium. In 2024, the Sooner faithful showed the type of atmosphere they can provide in their first SEC home game against Tennessee, even though it was a loss, and in Oklahoma's huge upset win over Alabama in November. Tiger Stadium, home to the LSU Tigers, came in at No. 1 on the list. Oklahoma witnessed firsthand what that environment, especially at night, can do to a team. This year, the Sooners will play three away games in stadiums that made the list. Tennessee's Neyland Stadium came in at No. 6, Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium ranked No. 8, and South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium came in at No. 17. Much of Oklahoma's success in 2025 will depend on how they handle those road environments. Oklahoma, in turn, will provide a great home atmosphere for tough matchups against Michigan, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Missouri. Oklahoma one of 32 teams with a real shot at College Football Playoff
Oklahoma's odds of making the College Football Playoff are good. They're better odds than 104 teams who don't stand a chance to make it, anyway. That's according to ESPN's playoff predictor. The network's computers provide 32 teams with at least a 10% chance of making the playoffs. The number is higher than any since the company's tracking began. Oklahoma has the 23rd best odds as analytics tab the Sooners with an 18.4% chance to make the playoff and a 0.8% chance to win the national title. They're a fringe contender in desperate need of an offensive answer after finishing next to last in the SEC in scoring offense (24 points per game). With a new offensive coordinator and quarterback, and coach Brent Venables now calling the plays on defense, it's time to see if the overhaul pays off in Year 4 for Venables. - Heather Dinich, ESPN The five highest-ranked conference champions, not just in power conferences, will receive an automatic bid to the 12-team tournament. Remaining teams will be chosen by the selection committee, which, Dinich wrote, won't always see things the same way the computer does. FBS coaches have a different take, too. Texas A&M coach Mike Elko said only four or five teams have a shot to win the national championship. Alabama's Kalen DeBoer said eight. Oklahoma's SEC foes Texas (No. 1), Georgia (No. 2), and Alabama (No. 4) all cracked the top five. Also in front of the Sooners from the SEC are Tennessee, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, LSU, Auburn, and South Carolina. It's important to note that the ranking isn't the same as the betting odds. OU is in front of South Carolina and Auburn, while with the same odds as Tennessee. The Sooners open their 2025 season at home against FCS Illinois State on August 30. Michigan, which is ranked 14th on ESPN's list, follows in Week 2. Contact/Follow us @SoonersWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Oklahoma news, notes, and opinions.
