Coronation Street's Sue Devaney reveals big decision over Debbie story: 'I don't want to know'

Yahoo05-04-2025
Coronation Street star Sue Devaney has explained the decision she made regarding Debbie Webster's dementia storyline.
Debbie has started to show signs of the memory loss disease, with the story set to culminate in her exit, despite fan outcry.
In order to more accurately portray real life, and to make things more exciting for her as an actor, Devaney has asked soap bosses not to let her known plot details in advance.
"I have decided that I don't want to know what is coming up for Debbie," she said. "I want to wait for the scripts because in real life you don't know what is coming. I think it's more interesting to play it like that."
She also explained what research she did for the storyline, stating that: "I've spoken to my friend who works with dementia patients. She's got a clinic where she sees patients with early onset dementia so I speak to her a lot.
"We have been working with Dementia UK, when we had our initial meeting they told me a lot about the tests you have to do and how you are diagnosed with it and where you go from there."

The actor added that Debbie feels incredibly scared when the specialist refers her to the memory clinic, after initially thinking she was just going through the menopause.
"It makes her think it's something more serious," she said. "Menopause is a scary time for any woman, with hormones all over the place and doing bizarre things. It changes your brain.
Related:
"I spoke to a support worker from Dementia UK, and she said many women think it's just menopause and don't get tested, even though the symptoms can be similar, like brain fog, but on a much bigger scale with dementia."
According to a press release, this storyline will unfold "over the coming months and years", so Debbie may not be going anywhere anytime soon.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.

WWE Drops Bombshell PLE, Waging War With AEW's Biggest Show

WWE Wrestlepalooza Credit: WWE WWE isn't playing games or pulling punches. On Wednesday, the promotion made a symphony of announcements and it feels like they're dropping a diss track targeting AEW. Here's the breakdown. For starters: WWE's move to ESPN has been expedited. Originally, it was set to begin in 2026, but the WWE has moved to have this agreement start in September. Guess what day? You guessed it. WWE is kicking off a "massive" new premium live event called WrestlePalooza and it will take place on September 20. If you're in touch with AEW's product, you know that's the same day as AEW All-Out, which is set to feature WWE Hall-of-Famer Adam Copeland aka Edge. That event will take place in Vancouver. WWE's WrestlePalooza happens in Indianapolis. TORONTO, CANADA - JULY 6: John Cena makes his way to the ring during Money in the Bank at Scotiabank Arena on July 6, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario. He'll be joined by Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, CM Punk, and Drew McIntyre on a card designed to showcase WWE's top champions and marquee names. The event begins at 7 p.m. ET and streams live on ESPN's new direct-to-consumer service which starts on August 21. This marks the official start of WWE's five-year, $1.6 billion partnership with ESPN. Subscribers to ESPN's unlimited plan will receive all Premium Live Events as part of the package, immediately positioning WWE programming in front of one of the largest sports audiences in the world. Paul 'Triple H' Levesque called it a defining moment, promising 'the biggest Superstars in WWE' on 'the biggest brand in sports media.' Indianapolis seemed like a strong choice, coming off a successful Royal Rumble at Lucas Oil Stadium earlier this year. Tickets for WrestlePalooza go on sale Friday, with presales beginning Thursday. The move adds more weight to WWE's fall schedule, which also includes Crown Jewel on Oct. 11 and Survivor Series on Nov. 29, both slated for ESPN platforms. Already facing sagging viewership and the pressure of negotiating a new television deal, All Out now goes head-to-head with a stacked WWE card on a mainstream network. AEW signed a new rights deal with Warner Bros. in 2024. However, the viewership has been down as has ticket sales. WrestlePalooza threatens to impact both important metrics. Analysts have called it a 'power play,' with WWE Hall-of-Famer Bully Ray suggesting the company is making sure 'nobody is ever in a position to become competition again.' I don't blame WWE for its moves. This is a highly competitive market and while shrewd, this is how companies give their product the best chance to increase its success in a competitive market. WWE is seemingly planning a stacked card that snatches away a large percentage of viewership from AEW on a key night. As a wrestling fan, it'll be exciting to see what WrestlePalooza becomes and how or if AEW responds to WWE's power move.

WWE getting early ESPN start with John Cena-led Wrestlepalooza — going head-to-head with AEW

WWE's first premium live event of the ESPN era is coming early and going head-to-head with its biggest competition. WWE announced the first-ever Wrestlepalooza will air Saturday, Sept. 20, from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, live on ESPN's new direct-to-consumer streaming service beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The event will run directly against All Elite Wrestling's All Out pay-per-view from Toronto's ScotiaBank Arena starting at 6 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime, regularly for $49.99 per show. WWE announced a five-year, $1.6 billion deal with ESPN earlier this month for the right to stream its premium live events, which was supposed to begin in 2026. Now it appears WWE's PLE deal with Peacock ends after Clash in Paris on Aug. 31. ESPN's new service, which launches on Aug. 21, will carry all WWE PLEs moving forward. Customers with the service's unlimited plan, which costs $29.99 per month, will be able to stream the WWE PLEs. There is also a Select Plan for $11.99 per month. 3 John Cena was announced for WWE's Wrestlepalooza show on Sept. 20. Getty Images Currently, those who have ESPN via DirecTV, Charter Communications, Hulu + LiveTV, FuboTV and Verizon Fios will have access to the WWE PLEs at no additional charge, according to an ESPN spokesperson. Wrestlepalooza, which is the name of a former ECW event, marks the first time WWE will run a main roster PLE directly up against an AEW pay-per-view. All Out is one of the company's four original PPVs. 3 ESPN's DTC streaming service launches Aug. 21. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Con WWE announced that John Cena will make a stop on his retirement tour at Wrestlepalooza, with the rumor being that it will be where he will clash with Brock Lesnar. WWE champion Cody Rhodes, current rival Drew McIntyre, World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins, CM Punk and Women's Intercontinental champion Becky Lynch were also announced for the show. 3 AEW and its world champion 'Hangman' Adam Page will also be running All Out on Sept. 20. Lee South/WWE WWE continued its attempts to counterprogram AEW by running NXT's Great American Bash show and a 'Saturday Night's Main Event' headlined by Goldberg's retirement match against Gunther, up against AEW's biggest show of the year, All In, in July. The move saw AEW president Tony Khan turn All In into the longest televised pro wrestling show in U.S. history at eight hours, including the preshow, to counterprogram WWE's counterprogramming All In still did an estimated 180,000 to 185,000, according to the Wrestling Observer.

The Rogue Prince of Persia is officially out for PC and consoles

Ubisoft and Evil Empire's long-awaited The Rogue Prince of Persia is finally out and available for purchase. It's been in early access on Steam for over a year and the developers have made plenty of changes during that time to get the game ready for a general launch. It's available for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. It's also playable in the cloud by using the Xbox Cloud service, Ubisoft+ and Amazon Luna. Nintendo fans will have to wait a bit longer. The game's coming to the Switch and Switch 2, but not until later this year. For the uninitiated, The Rogue Prince of Persia is a sidescrolling roguelike with plenty of fast-paced action and a graceful move set inspired by other games in the franchise. Co-developer Evil Empire is the company behind the iconic Dead Cells , which is also a sidescrolling roguelike. Since launching in early access, developers have added more biomes and a new story, in addition to refining the gameplay and character designs. If you've been hankering for a new roguelike with some light Metroidvania elements (just like Dead Cells ), this could be the game you've been waiting for. It costs $30.
