Ben Healy third behind Tadej Pogačar in prestigious Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic
took one of Ireland's best-ever performances in the prestigious Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic on Sunday, finishing third after a stellar performance.
The race was won by a dominant
Tadej Pogačar
, who struck out on the climb of Côte de la Redoute with 35km remaining and soloed to the finish line. The Tour de France winner and current world champion has taken seven wins in 14 race days this season, furthering comparisons with the legendary Eddy Merckx.
Healy went over the summit of the climb in third place and was part of a small chase group behind Pogačar. He later pushed ahead with the Italian rider Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) and the duo finished 1:03 behind.
Ciccone took the sprint for second, with Healy admitting he 'bottled it', doing too much work in the final kilometre to fend off the next group behind.

Seán Kelly won the race in 1984 and 1989, while Dan Martin triumphed in 2013. Stephen Roche and his nephew Martin were runners-up in 1987 and 2017 respectively.
Healy took fourth two years ago and the result marks his continued evolution as a top rider.
'I am really, really happy with it,' he said of the result. 'We had a plan today and just tried to set a pace on La Redoute and let Tadej do his thing. Maybe we would have reeled him in, but he was a lot stronger today than he was in Amstel [the Amstel Gold Race].
'I had good legs and was able to follow favourites. I made it into Roche aux Faucons [climb] with a bit of a gap and still had the legs to go.
'Over the top then me and Giulio just fully committed to the line. I am super happy with the podium.'
Liège-Bastogne-Liège is one of cycling's five Monuments, the most prestigious of the one-day classics.

So Ivanka reached out to me, and her and I started talking about the possibilities, where it would be and, you know, I put together all the renderings." White isn't ruling out the possibility of McGregor returning, but he wants to see real commitment from the Dubliner. "I mean, if you see, he's been posting videos of himself training, he's back in the pool now, he wants the White House fight," White told Pardon My Take. "Listen, if he starts getting in shape and starts training and stays the course, that's the fight he wants, he keeps telling me he wants that fight so we'll see how it plays out over the next few months."

Matt Healy dreams of ECL group stage and Ireland's call as Hoops turn to FAI Cup
Matt Healy came home to experience the big European group stage nights that Shamrock Rovers revelled in last season. The in-form midfielder has his eyes on the prize after last Thursday's emphatic ECL third round second leg victory over Vikingur in Tallaght. And Healy believes that if Rovers can stay in the play-off first leg against Portuguese outfit Santa Clara - who finished fifth in the Primeira Liga last term -then Hoops can finish off the job again at home. "All eyes on next week," he said. "It'll be a difficult game in Portugal. They'll be a decent side as well, but hopefully we can get a result and bring it back to Tallaght, like Thursday night, and put on another performance. "I've only been here six months, but over the last few years, it's a very difficult place to come. So if we can bring a result back to Tallaght, it'll be very difficult for them." Jannik Sinner ends Atmane's dream run to reach Cincinnati final
Top seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner, playing on his 24th birthday, ended French qualifier Terence Atmane's dream run at the Cincinnati Open with a 7-6(4) 6-2 win on Saturday to reach the final of the US Open tune-up event. Sinner won a remarkable 91% of his first-serve points, did not face a single break point during the 86-minute match and converted two of five break points in his first career meeting with world number 136 Atmane. "Very, very tough challenge," Sinner said on court after being serenaded with "Happy Birthday" by the crowd. "Every time when you play against someone completely new it's very difficult. "I knew that I had to be very, very careful and my mindset today was in a good spot. I feel like I handled situations on the court very well." The Italian world number one had his hands full throughout a tightly contested first set which featured an imperious serving display from both men and not a single break point opportunity for either player. Sinner, who lost just three points on serve in the opening set, held to love for a third consecutive game to force the tiebreak where Atmane gifted his opponent the opening point with a double fault and from there the Italian never looked back. The reigning US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon champion opened the second set with a nine-minute hold of serve, then held to love before finally breaking Atmane for a 3-1 lead that gave him the cushion he needed. Sinner followed that with another hold to love to go 4-1 up and all but end any hope for Atmane, who beat top-10 players Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune en route to his maiden ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. With Atmane serving at 2-5 and looking to stay in the match, Sinner quickly jumped ahead 0-40 before sealing the win on his third match point when the Frenchman sent a forehand into the net.
