Dedicated hotline proposal to report gas cylinder hazards
The Muharraq Municipal Council has called for the establishment of a dedicated hotline for residents to report unsafe gas cylinder storage and other potential hazards, ensuring a faster response than the general emergency number (999).
While the existing 'Tawasul' system allows the public to file complaints, officials argue that a specialised emergency contact would enable authorities to take swifter action in high-risk situations.
The tragic loss of eight workers in a fire linked to unsafe housing has renewed concerns over the handling of gas cylinders in shared labour accommodations and commercial areas.
In response, the Muharraq Municipal Council met with Civil Defence representatives to go over existing safety measures, enforcement gaps, and ways to strengthen oversight.
Council Acting Chairman, Engineer Saleh Bu Hazza, said poor coordination between licensing authorities made it difficult to track residential and commercial activities, delaying early warnings about risks. He called for stricter penalties and clearer rules to ensure gas cylinders are stored and used safely.
Shortage of inspectors
He also pointed to a shortage of inspectors, saying authorities needed more boots on the ground to monitor housing and businesses regularly.
Past inspections, carried out by the council with Civil Defence, had not delivered the intended results due to a lack of follow-up, he added.
A rethink of regulatory bodies and an expansion of their powers to issue violations and enforce penalties was needed, he said.
The meeting touched on the role of property owners, with officials warning that some landlords were knowingly renting unsafe housing to workers.

Twelve violating and irregular workers were detained, and 125 violators were deported following 1,077 inspection campaigns and visits carried out by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) between 25 and 31 May 2025. Joint coordination The Authority affirmed the continuation of joint coordination with government agencies to intensify inspection campaigns in all governorates of the Kingdom, and to address any violations or practices that negatively affect the stability and competitiveness of the labour market or harm economic and social security of the Kingdom. The renewed its call on all members of the society to support the efforts of government agencies in addressing illegal labour practices, by reporting violations via the electronic form on the authority's website or by calling the authority's call centre on 17506055 or via the government's Suggestions and Complaints System (Tawasul). New Civil Defence Centre Inaugurated in Riffa
His Excellency General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Civil Defence Council, officially inaugurated the new Civil Defence Centre in the Riffa area this morning. The Minister was received by Chief of Public Security Lieutenant-General Tariq bin Hassan Al Hassan, Southern Governor His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Khalifa, and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior Shaikh Nasser bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa. Honouring Leadership's Vision for Safety Upon arrival, the Interior Minister unveiled a commemorative plaque, marking the official opening of the facility. He praised the continuous support of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the follow-up by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in advancing the Ministry's development strategy. The Minister emphasized that the new initiatives and integrated safety programs are part of a modern security framework designed to protect the public and enhance national preparedness.
