One dead, six wounded in Indianapolis shooting
The shooting occurred around 1.27am (1.27pm Malaysian time) as officers were investigating disturbances, deputy police operations chief Tanya Terry told a news conference.
One was pronounced dead at the scene. Five wounded people were taken from the scene to hospital for treatment, while a sixth walked into a medical facility in a stable condition.
Three of the victims were juveniles, including the person who died, Terry said, without providing the ages and conditions of the other victims.
Police recovered several firearms at the scene and detained around seven people for questioning.
Indianapolis police chief Chris Bailey condemned recurring violence in the city's downtown area, particularly involving young people.
'A kid is dead tonight,' Bailey told reporters. 'It's unacceptable.'
The police chief said officers made about 20 arrests throughout the night and recovered guns from minors, including 'an assault rifle stuffed in the front of his pants.'
Bailey criticised parents for allowing 'hundreds of unsupervised kids' to roam the downtown area at night.
'We are not your children's keeper. You are,' he said. 'Parents and guardians have got to step up.'
The chief said thousands of people had come downtown for fireworks and left peacefully, but others stayed and 'caused trouble.'
The shooting marked the second weekend of violence in downtown Indianapolis, according to the police chief.
Serious gun violence is common across the United States, where many states have few barriers to the purchasing of firearms, despite widespread support for greater gun control.
There have been 189 mass shootings in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive—which it defines as four or more people shot. — AFP

SUNGAI PETANI, July 6 —Police have arrested three men believed to be the masterminds behind the sale of fake medical certificates (MCs) in the district over the past two years. Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said the group's modus operandi involved issuing MCs without the need for any medical consultation or treatment. He said the case came to light during a probe into a breach of integrity involving a low-ranking police personnel who had frequently submitted MCs. 'This led to the discovery of the group selling fake MCs,' he told a press conference at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters here today. According to him, during a raid on a premises in Taman Songket Indah near here at 4.30 am on June 26, police seized various items, including about 20 fake MCs, tablets, rubber stamps bearing the names of doctors, A4-sized paper, a laptop and a printer. Hanyan said the three unemployed suspects, in their 30s and 40s, sold fake MCs for RM25 to RM30 a day, targeting civil servants as their primary 'customers'. He said the main suspect was found to be a heart patient currently receiving treatment at a hospital. 'During each hospital visit, the suspect would note down the attending doctor's name and later use it on rubber stamps. Most of the names belonged to actual doctors, but the job titles were inaccurate,' Hanyan said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 468 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

2 men killed in shootout with cops in Jitra

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Two men, suspected to be criminals, were killed in a shootout with police in Jitra, Kedah, today. The incident happened on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) entrance road at 8.05am. Kedah police chief Fisol Salleh said policemen patrolling the area approached a four-wheel drive vehicle, with its occupants looking suspicious, and ordered it to stop, Bernama reported. 'The two men opened fire on the police vehicle. In the shootout that ensued, both were killed. 'Police found two firearms – a revolver and semi-automatic pistol – several bullets, a parang, and other tools for carrying out criminal activities in the car,' he told reporters at the scene. He said a background check on one of the men, aged 41, revealed that he had a criminal record for more than 40 offences. The identity of the other suspect was still unknown as he did not have any identification papers on him. 'We believe the two were part of a larger group commiting violent crimes across the country, including drug trafficking, gangsterism, factory break-ins and armed robberies. This gang is believed to have been active since 2020. 'The police forensic unit found three bullet casings at the scene,' he said. The bodies were sent to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar for an autopsy. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department acting director Fadil Marsus, who was also present at the scene, said the two men were believed to belong to a criminal gang that had committed serious crimes. 'We are investigating whether they were linked to a criminal group in Klang, Selangor. The group is believed to have more than 30 members,' he said.
