Sales of popular convertibles plummet across UK as drivers opt for practical and safe SUVs

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DRIVERS are no longer going topless – as the days of the convertible are numbered. Despite our terrible weather, this country was once the second- biggest market for the drop-top models in Europe. New sales of cabriolets have dropped by almost a tenth over the past couple of decades. There is so little demand for them that only 16 new car models offer a roof-down option. These symbols of motoring freedom have been replaced by safe and practical SUVs, which last year became Britain's best-selling car. It was all very different in the decadent 1990s when sales of convertibles took off, peaking at 94,484 in 2004. A racy Mazda MX5, BMW Z3 or VW Golf GTi Cabriolet were a common sight on the nation's roads. The glamour of Thelma & Louise's 1966 Ford Thunderbird or newly married Prince William and Kate waving to the crowds from their Aston Martin DB6 Volante have faded. Unwelcome luxury Last year, only 12,173 sales of new convertibles were registered here. Chris Knapman, from vehicle research and sales site CarGurus UK, said: 'Our latest annual Convertibles Report highlights more than just a drop in new car model selection. 9 Beatle John Lennon enjoying his Triumph Herald convertible in 1965 Credit: Getty 9 Elle Macpherson posing with the hybrid Fiat 500c 9 Barbie's Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in a Corvette Credit: Alamy 'It reflects a wider shift in the automotive landscape towards SUVs.' Rare Ford Escort Cabriolet 'Special Edition' goes under the hammer But we are not alone, as global sales of cabriolets were down 20 per cent over the past year. One of the problems is that manufacturers are focusing on electric cars to help governments hit Net Zero. At the moment, only two electric cars are available with an open top on this country's forecourts — the Fiat 500 and MG Cyberster The need to keep these vehicles energy efficient means that the juice used for lowering or raising the roof is an unwelcome luxury. At the moment, only two electric cars are available with an open top on this country's forecourts — the Fiat 500 and MG Cyberster. There is still, at least, a demand for cabriolets in the second-hand market. The latest figures from AutoTrader show that advert views for open-top cars hit 150,085 this summer, up from 133,329 in July 2023. And with well over one million convertibles registered in the UK, there is still a good chance of seeing motorists soaking up the sunshine with their shades on. 9 VW Golf GTi Cabriolet from 1985 Credit: Alamy 9 The Graduate's Dustin Hoffman in Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider Credit: Alamy 9 MG Cyberster is one of only two electric drop-tops on UK forecourts Credit: Supplied

My best moments have been in convertibles but sales are plummeting & there's a reason why

Driving with the roof down is the ultimate celebration of life... it's raw and immersive ERIN BAKER My best moments have been in convertibles but sales are plummeting & there's a reason why Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IN more than 25 years as a motoring journalist, I have tested all sorts of vehicles – from supercars to SUVs. I have been in all sorts of countries and on all sorts of circuits and roads. And it occurs to me that all the best moments have been spent in convertibles. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 What could beat cruising through London in a Bentley Continental GTC, roof down and V8 humming, as summer scents and city lights filled the warm evening air Credit: Handout 3 Mazda's MX-5 is the world's best-selling Credit: Getty Why is that? Well, it's nothing to do with performance or handling, given drop-tops come in all shapes and sizes. No, it's because driving with the roof down is the ultimate celebration of life – with the wind in your hair, the weather in your face, belting out songs at the top of your voice without a care in the world, your senses overwhelmed by the noises and sounds. It's raw, it's immersive. It's what driving is meant to be about. There was the time I found myself crawling up a closed ski slope in Chamonix, France, at the launch of one of the world's few convertible SUVs, the Land Rover Evoque (there's also the Jeep Wrangler whose roof comes off, or the Volkswagen T-Roc Cabrio, if you fancy the idea). It was a very strange and massively fun experience, surrounded by the high, chunky sides of this 4x4, tyres crunching through the snow, but with blue sky above me and the warm sun on my face. Shame no one else loved it as much as me and it disappeared from sale. Thing of beauty Then there was the drive through London one August evening in a Bentley Continental GTC (it's a tough job), with its smart tweed roof furled behind the embossed headrests, V8 engine purring quietly in the twilight heat, mellow sounds on the radio, the city smells of restaurants, perfume, cigar smoke and life drifting gently through the yellow pools of street light. And of course, right back in a world before children, when disposable income was a thing, and responsibility was not, my boyfriend and I had a two-seater Mazda MX-5 in London. It is the world's best-selling convertible, which we used and abused, as you do in your twenties, unclipping the vinyl roof on the move, throwing it back to land where it pleased behind our seats, before hurtling out into the countryside for yet another mini-break. Sigh. Recently, I had the pleasure of six months with one of the UK's two current electric convertible models on sale, the Abarth 500e (a hot version of the Fiat 500e). Ferrari releases NEW convertible with blistering 211mph top speed for £366,500 Electric convertibles aren't yet a thing because everyone has been concentrating on keeping the weight and price down and efficiency up for electric cars, to extend their range as much as possible, which means no drop-top. However, I hope we start to see more on sale as efficiency and cost improve, because driving along in silence with that little roof folded back was a thing of beauty. It sounds cheesy, but you really do feel at one with nature, breathing in air that you haven't polluted with tailpipe emissions It sounds cheesy, but you really do feel at one with nature, breathing in air that you haven't polluted with tailpipe emissions, listening to the birds calling in the sky above you, the blue stretching on forever. It beats an air-conditioned box any day.

A lifetime collection of classic cars, motorbikes, spare parts and tools belonging to a professional mechanic is to be auctioned off next month - with some of them expected to sell for up to £80,000. Other standout models include a 1967 Jaguar E-Type Roadster, once described by rival Enzo Ferrari as 'the most beautiful car ever made', as well as an 1956 Jaguar XK140 Roadster, Austin-Healey Lenham 100-4 and, bizarrely, a 2003 VW Golf R32. Jaguar enthusiasts will also find three Mk II 3.8 MOD saloon cars, all complete but covered in dust after years of storage. Other highlights include an Austin Healey 3000, owned since 1969 with high-standard bodywork needing finishing. Fans of iconic sports cars may also fancy a bid on a 1972 Lotus Elan S4, a project car owned for 35 years, or a 1975 Triumph Stag, last driven into storage nearly 20 years ago. For something unique, there's even a 1984 Talbot Auto-Trail Apache Motorhome, ready to be fixed up before it embarks on new adventures. The auction, set to take place on Wednesday, September 10, at the Charterhouse Long Street Salerooms in Sherborne, Dorset, will come after an official viewing to be held at the property near Dorchester on Monday, September 8 and Tuesday, September 9. The collection in total includes over 20 vehicles, two motorbikes and an extensive assortment of spare parts and restoration tools. The listing describes the vehicles as ranging from rare, complete originals to partially restored cars and those needing full restoration. Those keen to kid can turn up, register and bid at the auction salerooms, or name their price over the telephone, which is an available option for those unable to attend. £50m supercar collection for sale after icon's death - including rare classic Online bidding is also available for those participating remotely. A Charterhouse spokesperson said: "The owner, who is no longer able to look after and continue to restore his beloved vehicles, is offering his cars, spares, workshop and other tools, in the Charterhouse auction on Wednesday, September 10, with plenty of projects to choose from." This comes as a luxury Range Rover once driven by the late Queen Elizabeth II is set to go under the hammer – complete with its royal mascot and bespoke security features. The 2006 L322 model was exclusively used by Her Majesty between 2006 and 2008. And it's expected to fetch up to £70,000 when it goes on sale at the Silverstone Festival on August 23. The monarch famously took the wheel at events including the 2007 Royal Windsor Horse Show, with the vehicle specially kitted out for royal duties. It boasts enhanced internal wiring for security and communications, bespoke side steps, mud flaps, and even a made-to-measure dog guard – a nod to the Queen's lifelong love of dogs. Rear grab handles, since removed but with traces still visible, were once fitted to help her Majesty in and out.
