'No One Showed Interest:' Pagani Customers Don't Want An Electric Hypercar
Pagani doesn't have trouble selling its cars. With around 50 produced every year, buyers are content to wait for an extremely long time to get their very own hand-built Italian supercar. That is, unless it's electric. In an interview with CarBuzz , Pagani spokesperson Sebastian Berridi revealed past plans for an all-electric performance car from the brand. But when the company showed this idea to customers, there was absolutely zero demand. So the idea was scrapped. The Utopia's AMG-sourced twin-turbo V-12 engine. Photo by: Sevian Daupi / Motor1 "When we started the development of the Utopia eight years ago, we dedicated a team to a fully battery-electric model," Berridi told CarBuzz . "The idea was to launch an electric Utopia and [a] combustion version. We never thought of a hybrid because we believed it was very complex. The technology was not at its peak in that period." Pagani Had Plans for an EV, But No One Was Interested Despite investing what sounds like a significant sum into the electric Utopia's development, Pagani ultimately had to drop the car from its future lineup, simply because people didn't want one. "We showed the idea to our dealers and our customers, but no one showed interest," Berridi said. "We are a family-owned company, so we had to abandon the battery-electric vehicle. It's a shame because we invested a lot in research and development. We were very close to suppliers for Mercedes-AMG. They were at the peak of technology. We had to cancel it. We have to make a sustainable company, and we can't go against our economic interest." Right now, Pagani has no plans to move away from the V-12, at least for the near future. That's thanks to AMG, which has made the engine viable until the early 2030s in the US. "AMG homologated the engine until 2030 in Europe and 2032 in California, and we are confident that the homologation will be extended," Berridi told CarBuzz . "It's very confusing because the legislation changes a lot. The V-12 is a celebration; to be able to homologate a manual with a V-12. The mechanical engineering is a cerebral celebration that the customer needs. There are no plans to move away [from the V-12]." Other Supercar Manufacturers Face Similar Hurdles Pagani isn't alone in its struggle to sell EVs. Christian von Koenigsegg told Top Gear the appetite for electric hypercars is "extremely low" right now. Mate Rimac admitted his company still hasn't been able to sell out all 150 units of the Nevera, despite it holding numerous acceleration and braking records. Maserati recently canceled plans to build an all-electric version of the MC20. Lamborghini delayed the launch of its first EV, and also pushed back the reveal of an all-electric Urus. Even Ferrari has reportedly delayed its second upcoming electric car over "zero" demand. While these manufacturers offer superior design and exclusivity, similar performance can be found in vehicles for a fraction of the price. Just look at the numbers behind cars like the Tesla Model S Plaid and the Lucid Air Sapphire. The tech just isn't there to differentiate the exotics when it comes to performance, at least right now. 'Back in love': MotoGP champion Martin stays with Aprilia
Reigning MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin said on Thursday he would stay with the Aprilia team for the 2026 season, dispelling doubts about his future. "In life we have to take some decisions and now the decision is to stay here in Aprilia for one more season," Martin said at a press conference ahead of the Grand Prix of Czechia. The 27-year-old Spaniard has been at odds with Italian manufacturer Aprilia after initially saying he intended to activate a release clause in his contract at the end of the season. Martin is returning to competition after being sidelined for nearly four months by injuries. After missing the first three races of the season following two pre-season crashes, he started in Qatar in April but crashed on lap 14, suffering injuries including 11 broken ribs. He said he started to have doubts about his plan to quit while recovering in hospital and not knowing if he would race again. "From that point I had to to fight for what I thought was the best for me... I'm not an idiot and I see that we together have a lot of potential. We can do really a lot and hopefully I am really prepared for what's coming," Martin added. He said he could understand that Aprilia were fighting "for their rights" and appreciated how the team "helped me to be in a safe place". - 'Happy to be here' - "I think in relationships it's like a roller coaster. You can get in love, then you have some fights, but finally if you like the other person at the end of the day you will work hard to stay together and to fight for your targets," he said. "For sure we had a big fight with Aprilia, but now is the time to start to build together, because... we want to win in the future. "So this is the important thing and I think it's possible to get back in love, let's say," Martin added. Martin admitted he would rather be in the paddock than telling journalists about the move, but he said he wanted to sort the affair out before he hits the track. He declined to speculate on his form ahead of the Czech GP in Brno as he has managed to compete in just a single race in nine months. "I have missed 6,000 kilometres so I have to take my patience. I need to take time... I'm happy to be here, I'm happy that I'm strong to get back to the bike," Martin added. He said there was nothing to apologise for to Aprilia, but admitted he was grateful to the team. "Maybe in the future, if we win together, I will say thanks to (Aprilia sports director) Massimo (Rivola) for all they did to keep me here." frj/nf

Why Ferrari's F80 Powertrain Should Worry Supercar Rivals
Why Ferrari's F80 Powertrain Should Worry Supercar Rivals originally appeared on Autoblog. Racing DNA in the F80's powertrain Ferrari's newest spectacle, the F80, is a $3.9 million hybrid hypercar eight years in the making with a powertrain that will make comparable rivals sweat. The 2026 F80 contains a 3.0-liter V6 powertrain with nearly 1,200 combined horsepower, making it the most powerful street-legal Ferrari ever. This V6 produces 900 peak horsepower or 300 horsepower per liter, while the hybrid system's electric front axle and motor deliver an additional 300 horsepower. The F80 features a 120-degree, 3.0-liter block gas engine equipped with twin 48-volt electrically assisted turbochargers, spinning to 130,000 rpm and producing 3.7 bar of boost, or 55.5 psi —the highest ever achieved on a production car, according to MotorTrend. This hypercar also has the highest peak cylinder pressures of any production Ferrari. Many of the F80's powertrain components stem from the 499P, which has won Le Mans the past three consecutive years, starting in 2023. The F80's powertrain also uses the first MGU-K (hybrid power unit component in Formula 1) electric motor manufactured in-house by Ferrari at Maranello. Two electric motors, an inverter, and an integrated cooling system are present on the front axle, enabling torque vectoring, which optimizes power delivery to each wheel, enhances grip, improves cornering, and solidifies stability. The rear electric motor also has a dedicated inverter to start the gas engine, recover energy to recharge the battery, and supplement engine torque in certain dynamic conditions. Ferrari has saved about 31 lbs in the F80 by combining multiple power electronics and cooling elements into one compact unit and utilizing a new mechanical layout. The automaker also reduced mechanical power losses by 20% using low-viscosity (thin) oil and a dry sump active lubrication system with an oil tank integrated directly into the rear axle. Rival powertrain spotlight Aston Martin's Valkyrie is a hybrid hypercar, with a track-only version available for the current 2025 production year and the upcoming 2026 model, which is scheduled to start deliveries during the second quarter of 2026. However, the Valkyrie did have a street-legal version as recent as Aston Martin's 2024 production year, with a starting price of about $3.5 million. This 2024 Valkyrie's powertrain falls short of the Ferrari F80 with 1,160 combined horsepower and a redline of about 11,100 rpm. The 2024 Valkyrie also uses a rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration, supplying less traction than the F80's AWD, enabled by its front electric motors. Mercedes-AMG's ONE initially started at $2.72 million, but its rarity led to a Dubai dealer listing an example for over $5 million. Again, the Mercedes-AMG ONE's total system horsepower and redline are behind the F80 at 1,063 and 11,000 rpm. While the Mercedes-AMG ONE is AWD, its Formula 1-derived electric motor spins the turbo up to 100,000 rpm, 30,000 rpm below the Ferrari F80. McLaren's $2.1 million W1 hybrid hypercar outperforms the F80's combined horsepower at 1,258, but revs up to 9,200 and offers RWD instead of AWD. Final thoughts The F80's price tag is well above some of its comparable rivals, but its advanced powertrain justifies its eye-watering cost by breaking multiple records for a production Ferrari. While McLaren's W1 does an exceptional job of bringing Formula 1 to the road, the F80 is the most direct transfer of Le Mans and F1 technology to a street-legal car to date. The F80's torque vectoring and instant electronic response also make it accessible to enthusiasts.
