Nvidia is working on China-tailored chips again after US export ban
Nvidia has told some of its biggest Chinese customers that it is tweaking the design of its artificial intelligence chips so they can be sold to Chinese businesses without clashing with U.S. export rules, The Information reported on Friday.
The chip giant has spoken with customers, including Alibaba Group, TikTok-parent ByteDance and Tencent Holdings , the report said, citing three people involved in the conversations.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang alerted customers about his plans while on his trip to Beijing, according to the report. Huang's Beijing trip in mid-April came days after the U.S. government limited exports of its H20 AI chips to China.
The export curbs on the primary chip Nvidia was legally permitted to sell in China would result in charges of $5.5 billion for the company, it had then said.
Nvidia has told customers that a sample of the new chip will be available as soon as June, The Information reported. The company also said it was still working on a China-specific version of its latest-generation AI chip, Blackwell, according to the report.
Nvidia declined to comment on the report. ByteDance, Alibaba, Tencent and the U.S. Commerce Department did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
The sale of Nvidia's advanced AI chips to China — a key market for the company — has been a contentious topic, with U.S. officials moving to restrict the flow of the most powerful chips to China to keep ahead in the AI race.

With the US and China keen on formally inking a deal to end the trade war between the 2 countries, India is stepping up efforts to mend relations with Beijing. In talks between foreign secretary Vikram Misri and visiting Chinese vice foreign minister Sun Weidong, India and China agreed to expedite measures to resume direct air services and to hold 'certain functional dialogues' to resolve specific issues of concern in, among other things, trade and economy Misri hosted Sun this week for a rare high-level bilateral visit from China, as first reported by TOI on Wednesday, and their second meeting this year, following the engagement in Beijing in January during which both sides had announced several measures to normalise the relationship. On this occasion, they agreed to continue to stabilize and rebuild ties with focus on people-centric engagements. According to Beijing, India reaffirmed its support for the ongoing Chinese presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the 2 sides also agreed to prepare for the 24th Meeting of the Special Representatives' (SR) on the India-China Boundary Question in India. The SR talks resumed in December last year after a gap of 5 years, with NSA Ajit Doval travelling to China. It was then announced that his counterpart Wang Yi would travel to India in 2025 for another round of talks. Beijing remains keen that PM Narendra Modi visit China this year for the SCO summit in Tianjin that will also see Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif in attendance. India has not confirmed Modi's participation and yet and will probably wait to see the outcomes of the SR meeting, which could take place as early as next month, and the SCO foreign ministers' meeting – ahead of the summit - that may have external affairs minister S Jaishankar participating. The Chinese readout of the Misri-Sun talks said that both sides pushed for resumption of direct flights, people-to-people exchanges and resumption of bilateral dialogue mechanisms steadily. According to Beijing, Sun said that both sides should follow the important understandings reached by Modi and President Xi Jinping during their meeting in Kazan last year, following the agreement to end the military standoff in eastern Ladakh. He also called for increasing mutual trust, properly handling differences and playing a constructive role in maintaining international peace and stability.

First batch of Kailash Manasarovar Yatra 2025 flagged off in Delhi
New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, presided over an event to flag off the first batch of Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, 2025 on June 13, 2025, at Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan in New Delhi, said a release. The Minister felicitated the Yatris on their selection and wished them a safe and fulfilling Yatra. According to the release, in his remarks, the Minister recognised the role of various Government of India Ministries and Departments, such as the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the state governments of Delhi, Uttarakhand and Sikkim, and the National Informatics Centre. He appreciated the Chinese side for its cooperation for the resumption of the Yatra. AMD unveils next-gen AI chips as it takes on Nvidia: 'For the first time, we...' CEO Lisa Su says
AMD has unveiled details about its Instinct MI400 series , the company's next generation of AI chips set to ship next year. CEO Lisa Su presented the chips at a launch event in San Jose, California, emphasising their design for "rack-scale" systems crucial for powering the massive AI computations of today and tomorrow. Su also claimed that AMD's MI355X can outperform Nvidia 's Blackwell chips. The MI400 series chips are designed to be assembled into a full server rack, dubbed Helios, which AMD described as a unified system capable of tying thousands of chips together, as per a report by CNBC. "For the first time, we architected every part of the rack as a unified system," Su explained, highlighting Helios as "really a rack that functions like a single, massive compute engine." OpenAI CEO Sam Altman endorses AMD chips A significant endorsement came from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who appeared on stage with Su. Altman expressed confidence in the new chips "When you first started telling me about the specs, I was like, there's no way, that just sounds totally crazy. It's gonna be an amazing thing," said Altman, whose company is a customer of Nvidia chips. OpenAI also confirmed it will be integrating the AMD chips. What is different in AMD's newest AI chips This "rack-scale" approach is vital for hyperscale AI clusters that span entire data centers, catering to the enormous power demands of cloud providers and developers of large language models, the report said. Su directly compared Helios to Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin racks, signaling AMD's intent to directly challenge its main rival. AMD's rack-scale technology aims to put its latest chips squarely in competition with Nvidia's Blackwell chips, which already offer configurations integrating 72 graphics-processing units. Nvidia currently holds a near-monopoly in the market for big data center GPUs, partly due to its early lead in developing essential AI software like CUDA. OpenAI, notably a significant Nvidia customer, has been providing feedback to AMD on its MI400 roadmap. AMD is positioning the MI400 chips, along with this year's MI355X chips, as a more cost-effective alternative to Nvidia's offerings.
