Netflix posts strong earnings despite economic headwinds
Rising economic uncertainty amid a global trade war did little to dampen Netflix's financial results in the first quarter.
The Los Gatos-based streaming giant said its first quarter revenue grew 13% to $10.5 billion, fueled by membership growth and higher prices.
Net income jumped 24% to $2.89 billion in the quarter, well ahead of the $2.48 billion that analysts had forecast, according to FactSet.
The robust growth provided further evidence of Netflix's dominance in the streaming market during an uncertain economy.
'In times when consumers may be scrutinizing their spending on streaming services, expert sentiment remains consistent: Netflix will continue to be the default platform and the last to be cut by the vast majority of users,' said John Conca, an analyst at investment research firm Third Bridge.
Netflix stock rose 1% on Thursday, closing at $973.03 a share.
Earlier this year, Netflix raised prices on certain subscription plans in the U.S., including for its lower cost ad-supported plan, which has been growing.
During the first quarter, Netflix became home to 'WWE Raw,' which analysts said helped boost the streamer's advertising and drew significant viewership.
Some analysts said they believe Netflix will weather any pullback in the advertising market caused by global trade disputes.
Netflix launched its cheaper ad-supported tier in 2022 and it is still a small, but growing, part of its business.
'Because Netflix relies on advertising less than most of its competitors do, in some ways it will be less exposed to tariffs that constrict upfront commitments,' said Ross Benes, senior analyst at research firm EMarketer. 'I don't think the macro economic problems the world is facing are going to hit them.'
Programs that Netflix launched in the first quarter included limited series drama 'Adolescence,' about a 13-year-old boy suspected of murdering his classmate. The series has drawn 124.2 million views so far and is ranked third in Netflix's most popular English language shows of all time, surpassing the first season of Regency romance series 'Bridgerton.'
Other shows that launched in the first quarter included the Shondaland mystery series 'The Residence,' reality TV program 'Million Dollar Secret,' Kate Hudson comedy series 'Running Point' and romance movie 'The Life List.'
'We're executing on our 2025 priorities: improving our series and film offering and growing our ads business; further developing newer initiatives like live programming and games; and sustaining healthy revenue and profit growth,' Netflix said in a letter to shareholders on Thursday.
Last year, Netflix said it had more than 301 million subscribers.

A $900K studio in Carrie Bradshaw's fictional townhouse has sold
A rare unit in Carrie Bradshaw's fictional Gramercy Park townhouse sold for $900,000, according to an eye-catching listing update on StreetEasy. The garden-level studio faces Manhattan's ultra-exclusive Gramercy Park, where entry is restricted to the fortunate few who live around the park's perimeter. Residents of this particular co-op at 3 Gramercy Park West can further flaunt their address as the home of fictional sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw in HBO's 'And Just Like That.' The third season of the buzzy 'Sex and the City' reboot premiered in late May. Viewers were greeted with the ever-fashionable Carrie, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, dashing in and out of her brand new Greek Revival-style pad. 8 Carrie Bradshaw leaves her new apartment at 3 Gramercy Park West in the third season of 'And Just Like That.' justlikethatmax/Instagram 8 The real-life property is a seven-unit co-op with a coveted key to Gramercy Park. Tim Waltman of Evan Joseph Carrie recently made a fresh start with her purchase in the luxurious Gramercy Park brownstone, having ditched her West Village one-bedroom in order to make room for her boyfriend Aidan, played by John Corbett. The recently sold studio on the red brick building's garden floor, accessed by a set of stairs beside the main entrance, has all the pre-war charms one would expect of a Gramercy Park address. But there was one big, Carrie-like catch to the $900,000 sale: There's no kitchen. Carrie's fictional home inside 3 Gramercy Park West is far more spacious than this real-life studio, but neither the character nor the co-op unit can cook a meal. Carrie famously joked in 'Sex and the City' that she only used her oven for sweater storage. This studio did away with the kitchen altogether. 8 The garden-level studio is accessed by a stairway to the right of the main entrance. Tim Waltman of Evan Joseph 8 In addition to park views, the studio boasts neat pocket shutters, high ceilings, wide plank floors and four closets. Tim Waltman of Evan Joseph 8 While the next owner will have to install a new kitchen, the studio's bathroom is ready to go. Tim Waltman of Evan Joseph Core broker Emily Beare, who represented the sellers, told The Post that the studio's $900,000 sales price reflected the missing amenity. The sellers, identified in city records as Kathryn and Milos Brajovic, bought the studio unit for the exact same price in early 2020. The family also owns a larger parlor-floor unit just above the studio. Milos Brajovic co-founded the Dallas-based studio Lantern Entertainment, formed from a 2018 acquisition of the Weinstein Company, which included control of famous films like 'Django Unchained' and 'Silver Linings Playbook.' The sellers had plans to connect their two units, Beare said, but ultimately reversed course. They decided to part with the studio, but not before tearing out the kitchen. 'He was either going to put a kitchen back in, or the new owner could do it on their own,' Beare said. 'That's why it's sold at the same price.' 8 Carrie, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, upgraded from her one-bedroom pad to a massive Gramercy Park apartment. Craig Blankenhorn/Max 8 The 'AJLT' fashionista purchased the pad to make room for her life with boyfriend Aidan. Craig Blankenhorn/Max Considering the prime location, however, Beare called the $900,000 price tag 'a very good price for a studio without a kitchen.' The studio boasts pre-war bones and classic proportions, with neat pocket shutters and high ceilings. The floors were recently upgraded to wide-plank wood, according to Beare. 'It wasn't an easy decision [to sell], because these types of properties don't come up very often,' Beare said. 'They're really special.' The buyer, whose identity could not be determined, closed on the studio last week for $900,000, Beare confirmed. 'The first time they came, they just loved it,' she said. 8 Carrie's fictional home at 3 Gramercy Park West is far more spacious than the $900,000 studio that just sold there. AP The unit garnered a lot of interest, Beare said. 'And Just Like That' understandably came up in most conversations. The address, however, lacks the real-life drama of Carrie's fictional Perry Street brownstone apartment, the owner of which is famously fighting off photo-hungry 'SATC' fans who have climbed up the private stoop for Instagram moments for years. Less foot traffic and the presence of a gate outside the 179-year-old Gramercy Park building prevents that kind of friction, Beare said, but the spot is still popular. 'We always see people coming and taking pictures, but you don't have crowds,' she said. While the apartment lacks a kitchen, the new owner can still indulge their inner Carrie with an impressive four closets, allowing for maximum Manolo Blahniks.

The AGS 3D tool automates critical tasks such as anomaly detection, corrosion mapping, and 3D modelling, promoting safety and increasing efficiency. By integrating AI, the tool processes the extensive data from drone surveys, including images, videos, and LiDAR scans, to automatically detect anomalies and map them onto a 3D model. This reduces the time and resources required for data processing while providing precise defect localisation. Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore president Matthieu de Tugny said: 'Precise localisation of defects is critical for effective investigation, maintenance planning, and ongoing monitoring. 'With AGS 3D, we are now able to automatically detect and localise defects, marking a significant step forward in remote inspection technologies and augmented survey. This innovation further supports stakeholders in optimising asset integrity management and inspection workflows.' The tool's application extends across various marine and offshore sectors and offers benefits such as 360° visualisation, optimised maintenance planning, and data-driven decision-making. It also provides a collaborative workspace for inspection teams and serves as a valuable addition to classification surveys. AGS experts review the final deliverables, such as LiDAR-based drone inspections and AI-driven corrosion detection, to ensure quality. Recently, Survitec's Seahaven evacuation system received formal Review Attestation from Bureau Veritas as a novel life-saving appliance under IMO Resolution A.520(13). Seahaven is acknowledged as a safety evacuation solution for high-capacity passenger vessels, capable of evacuating up to 1,060 persons in under 22 minutes. Netflix Adds Yahoo To Its Roster Of Programmatic Advertising Partners
Netflix has added Yahoo's demand-side platform [DSP] to its roster of programmatic advertising partners. In a blog post, president of advertising Amy Reinhard called the move a 'milestone' and said it will 'enable clients to buy Netflix advertising through Yahoo programmatically.' The Trade Desk, Google Display and Video 360 and Microsoft are already working with Netflix on programmatic ads. More from Deadline Comedian Nate Jackson Inks Netflix Deal For Debut Special 'Super Funny' Amazon Ads & Roku Set Landmark Pact Giving Brands Access To 80% Of Connected-TV Households Byron Allen Reaches Settlement With McDonald's In Lawsuit Claiming Racial Bias In Advertising With digital programmatic tools, advertiser messages are matched with targeted inventory, allowing buying and selling to happen at greater scale and with more precision than traditional methods. Although much of the process is automated, it still requires human oversight. The latest partnership, unveiled during Cannes Lions, follows Netflix's announcement last month at its upfront event in New York about enhanced targeting capabilities. The streaming giant has said its ad tier now reaches 94 million monthly active users, up from 70 million last November. As streaming continues to expand, the role of DSPs is gaining wider attention. Along with Monday's news from Netflix, Amazon and Roku also announced a groundbreaking partnership. The collaboration will combine Amazon's DSP with Roku's streaming capacity, allowing ad buyers to reach more than 80% of connected-TV households. 'Our focus has always been to offer the best advertising experience to our clients and members, and we're excited to continue to give advertisers the ability to reach the most engaged and attentive ad-supported viewers,' Reinhard wrote. Partnerships like the one with Yahoo 'are all about giving our clients even more options to buy against the incredibly engaged global audience coming to Netflix to watch their favorite series and films every day.'
