Kota Kinabalu: The Government has been urged to strengthen religious education institutions in Sabah by increasing allocations in the recently tabled supplementary budget, particularly to address the poor condition of state religious schools in rural areas. Nominated Assemblyman Datuk Aliakbar Gulasan (PAS) said that based on field observations, many state religious schools are still operating under inadequate conditions, while some remote areas have no religious schools at all. 'I have raised this matter before in the House. When we visit the ground, we find that many of the most rundown schools are state religious schools, which I believe fall under the jurisdiction of the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains). 'There are even villages that still don't have a religious school at all. These schools are crucial for children in rural communities to learn religious knowledge,' he said during the debate session at the State Assembly sitting. While expressing confidence in Jheains' efforts to address the issue, Aliakbar stressed the need for greater focus on rebuilding, maintaining, and staffing these schools. 'I believe the government has many initiatives and incentives in this area, but I ask that specific attention be given to improving the physical structure of these schools, especially in rural areas where there is a severe lack of manpower and religious teachers. 'Some of the additional funds from this budget should be allocated for new construction, maintenance, or the hiring of more teachers,' he said. Aliakbar also proposed closer collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Jheains to optimise the use of underutilised government school buildings as temporary religious learning spaces. 'There are areas with no religious schools, neither state religious schools nor Kafa (Kelas Agama dan Fardhu Ain), but they do have national schools. Perhaps discussions can be held between the Ministry of Education and Jheains to allow these national schools to be used as religious schools,' he said. He also thanked the State Government for tabling the supplementary budget and expressed hope that religious education would not be sidelined in the allocation process. Meanwhile, State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, in his winding-up speech on the RM1 billion Supplementary Supply Bill 2025, said that RM2.69 million has been proposed for the construction of religious schools and the maintenance of teachers' quarters and school facilities. Earlier, Deputy Speaker Datuk Richard Yong We Kong announced that the bill was passed unanimously after being debated by 26 assemblymen. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Prioritise youths' aspirations, Star and PBS told
Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 Text Size: Prem said the study also revealed that ideologies such as 'Sabah for Sabahans' and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) resonate strongly with this group. Kota Kinabalu: The leadership of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) should focus on youth-related issues in preparation for the 2025 state elections (PRN 2025), as recent statistics show that Malaysians aged 18-39 make up 50.47pc of the country's total electorate. Star Sabah Assistant Secretary-General, Prem Bechile Kitingan, said that this shift in voter demographics was highlighted in a study conducted by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), presented by Associate Professor Dr. Bonaventure Boniface at the PBS-Star Convention last Saturday. Advertisement 'Through the 2019 Constitutional Amendment, Malaysians aged 18 and above are automatically registered as voters, which also qualifies them to become election candidates,' said Prem, who is also the Director of the Sokid Villa Solidarity Research Centre. Prem added that in Sabah, this demographic tends to favour election candidates who understand youth sentiment, are free from corruption, uphold strong religious values, and possess credibility and integrity. The study, conducted by 10 UMS academics led by Associate Professor Dr Lai Yew Meng, was presented to the public for the first time. The research team included Dr. Budi Anto Mohd Tamring, Dr. Shaffarullah Abdul Rahman, Dr Amy Azuan Abdullah, and Dr Yusten Karulus, all of whom were also present at the convention. The number of young voters in Sabah in 2024 is 910,471 (53%), a 23pc increase from 485,939 in 2022. Prem said the study also revealed that ideologies such as 'Sabah for Sabahans' and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) resonate strongly with this group. They are drawn to capable and integrity-driven local leaders, prefer coalitions of local parties over solo local parties, and are not attracted to the 3R ideology (religion, race, and royalty). 'Young voters also support efforts to resolve issues related to dilapidated schools, having qualified teachers for subjects and infrastructure needs such as roads, water, electricity and rural internet access,' he said. Despite being active users of social media, this group still considers parental influence in shaping their political stance. However, they also have a strong sense of state identity, prioritising the candidate's ideology over party struggles. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ensuring no one left out
Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 By: Azmie Lim Text Size: Abdul Hakim said JPKK and village chiefs play a crucial role in helping the government to safeguard the welfare of the people. LAHAD DATU: Village Development and Security Committees (JPKK) and village chiefs have been urged to be more proactive in carrying out their roles to ensure that no members of the community are left out from receiving government assistance. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) Tungku Divisional head, Datuk Abdul Hakim Gulam Hassan, said JPKK and village chiefs play a crucial role in helping the government to safeguard the welfare of the people. Advertisement He said every JPKK and village chief must take a more proactive approach, regardless of political background. 'The role of the JPKK and village chiefs is important not only in voicing the development needs of their respective villages but, more importantly, in looking after the welfare of the people. 'JPKK and village chiefs are closer to the community and understand their needs better. Relay these needs to the leaders or responsible parties so that the people can receive the assistance they deserve.' Abdul Hakim said this after distributing aid to 25 families in Mukim Silabukan during his visit to the grassroots on Monday. The outreach activity is one of the programmes to engage with local residents – not only to deliver aid, but also to see first-hand the realities of people's lives, especially among the less fortunate. He said the role of the JPKK, village chiefs and local leaders in providing information will help ensure that aid reaches the intended target groups. In addition, Abdul Hakim encouraged welfare bodies such as the Sabah Zakat Center and the Welfare Department to conduct more frequent 'turun padang' (going down to meet the grassroots) visits to identify those genuinely in need. 'We know that the Welfare Department and Sabah Zakat Centre are active in helping the people, but we urge them to carry out more such outreach activities so that no one is left behind. 'This is because not everyone knows how to navigate the process of applying for government or welfare-related aid,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan firm in not forming alliances
Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: Azis said Warisan is also working towards securing enough seats to form the state government in the coming 17th State Election (PRN17). KUNAK: Parti Warisan reiterated its firm stance to continue operating independently without forming alliances with any other party in the coming state election (PRN). Its Information Chief, Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman, said the party is currently focusing on defending the seats it won in the last election, including the Kunak state seat, following the defection of the elected representative. Advertisement He added that Warisan is also working towards securing enough seats to form the state government in the coming 17th State Election (PRN17). 'We must have the mindset to win, to believe in ourselves and show that same belief to the people. Given the current situation, we're confident that Warisan can go beyond the 37-seat mark required by the constitution to form the state government,' he told the media after attending a casual Sembang Santai session with the Kunak community at SJKC Pai Sheng Hall last Saturday. In the same development, Parti Warisan Supreme Council member Datuk Mohd Yusof Apdal expressed optimism that the Kunak state seat would continue to be held by Warisan by fielding the best candidate in the state election. A total of 500 new members from five branches in Kunak submitted their membership forms to Warisan at the event. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
