‘Partition wounds still bleed': Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Remembrance Day
'Partition left deep wounds on Haryana's soil. Families came here with nothing but courage. Their determination rebuilt lives and transformed Faridabad into an industrial hub,' he said.
Calling the Partition as one of the most harrowing chapters in India's history, Saini announced a set of measures to immortalise its lessons, an exhibition of rare Partition-era literature and documents, inclusion of its history in school curricula, and a reform to simplify name-change procedures for women post-marriage.
Pledging ₹51 lakh from his discretionary fund for a Partition Horrors Memorial in Kurukshetra, he said that memorials are being developed across the state.
Saini said the state will host an exhibition of literature and documents related to the Partition, while the history of the tragedy will be incorporated into the school curriculum so that 'future generations understand both the suffering and the resilience of their ancestors'.
For women empowerment, Saini also promised special provisions to simplify official name changes after marriage, addressing a bureaucratic hurdle faced by many.
Saini said: 'This day is not just about grief, but about safeguarding India's integrity. We must build a Haryana and an India rooted in peace, harmony, and brotherhood.'
On the occasion, Union minister for power, housing, and urban affairs Manohar Lal Khattar slammed the Congress for 'erasing' the sacrifices of Partition victims, accusing it of prioritising dynastic politics since the days of former PM and Congress leader Indira Gandhi.
Haryana Assembly deputy speaker Krishan Lal Middha called the Partition 'one of humanity's worst tragedies', citing the loss of 1-1.2 million lives, the mass displacement of families, and atrocities committed against women.

Karnataka govt. will safeguard interests of people displaced due to dam projects: Madhu Bangarappa
Minister for School Education Madhu Bangarappa, who is also the Minister in charge of Shivamogga district, has said that the Karnataka government will safeguard the interests of people displaced due to the Sharavathi dam project, and of the bagair hukum cultivators of the district. Speaking to reporters after hoisting the national flag in Shivamogga on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day on Friday, the Minister said that the government would not evict any cultivator. However, he admitted that in a couple of cases, the officials erred in their action with regard to clearing the encroachment. Mr. Bangarappa stated that the Congress party, before the Assembly polls, had promised the people of Shivamogga that it would resolve the issues concerning people displaced by dam projects. Since the party came to power, the government had been making efforts to fulfil its promise, which include taking the Centre into confidence and appointing an efficient advocate to present the case in the Supreme Court, he said. 'Almost 80% of the work has been completed. The farmers will get the rights over the land they have been cultivating,' he added. On the issue of improving the facilities at McGann Hospital in Shivamogga, the Minister said that he had spoken to the Ministers concerned, and appealed for additional facilities, including a trauma care centre. He said that he would make efforts to develop the hospital into a super-speciality one, as hundreds of patients from Shivamogga and neighbouring districts visit the hospital every day. Besides that, the Minister said that the government was planning to construct a district office complex close to the KSRTC bus stand in the city. The people should get access to all important offices at one place, he added. Earlier in the day, Mr. Bangarappa hoisted the national flag at Nehru Stadium. As many as 29 platoons of policemen, home guards, municipal workers, school children, and NCC cadets took part in the parade. The Minister felicitated meritorious students and achievers in different fields at the event. Students from Nandan Education Trust, Police Public School, and Ananya High School presented dance-drama shows on the occasion. Legislators S.N. Channabasappa, Dhananjaya Sarji, and Balkhees Banu; officers including Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegade, Superintendent of Police G.K. Mithun Kumar, and Zilla Panchayat CEO N. Hemanth; and others were present on the occasion.

A traditional bonfire ceremony marked Auroville's twin celebration of 153rd birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo and the nation's 79th Independence Day. The event was marked by a virtual address from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and elaborate celebrations across Auroville's International township. In his address to a gathering that included Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and Auroville Foundation Secretary Jayanti S. Ravi, Mr. Pradhan drew powerful connections between Sri Aurobindo's revolutionary ideas and contemporary-India's development goals. 'Sri Aurobindo saw Independence not as the end of a struggle but as the start of a new journey where India would lead the world with its spiritual wisdom and strong values,' the Minister said adding this vision was in line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Viksit Bharat 2047 mission. Mr. Pradhan also joined the celebrations and held discussions with Ms. Ravi and G. Seetharaman, Officer on Special Duty, Auroville Foundation about the township's growth and educational contributions. Earlier, flag hoisting ceremonies took place at multiple venues in Auroville.
