Pakistan, Russia united for global peace: Gilani
Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that Pakistan and Russia share common goals for global peace, security and multipolarity in global affairs.
He made these remarks during a meeting with Federation Council of Russia Chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko held on the sidelines of the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Tashkent.
Gilani said that Pakistan's and Russia's evolving relationship is rooted in mutual respect and increasingly broad-based cooperation across defence, trade, energy, and multilateral platforms such as the SCO.
The two sides agreed to enhance institutional linkages between their respective parliaments, including exchange visits, the revival of Parliamentary Friendship Groups, and consistent dialogue to address shared challenges. Gilani acknowledged the significance of ongoing defence collaboration and suggested greater focus on security dialogue, military training exchanges, and counterterrorism coordination.
With bilateral trade showing positive momentum, both sides discussed diversifying economic ties in areas such as energy, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and IT.
The Senate chairman advocated for establishing banking channels and improved connectivity under regional frameworks.
Pakistan expressed strong support for Russia's role in promoting regional stability and multipolar global governance.

ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani took centre stage on Thursday in a high-stakes diplomatic sit-down with British High Commissioner Jane Marriott – pitching Pakistan as a peace-driven, climate-hit, and investment-hungry nation eager to deepen relations with the UK. Calling himself 'a man of peace,' Gilani praised Britain's behind-the-scenes diplomacy for easing tensions between nuclear neighbours Pakistan and India during the recent four-day clash between the two archrivals. With Marriott nodding along, Gilani pressed the UK to double down on its counter-terror cooperation and back efforts to stamp out extremism and cross-border threats – code for trouble brewing from across the Indian border. Gilani didnot mince words, once again calling for a UN-backed peaceful resolution to the decades-old flashpoint of Kashmir dispute, while urging London to use its diplomatic muscle. Gilani also flashed Pakistan's humanitarian credentials, reminding the world Pakistan has hosted more than three million Afghan refugees over the years – and is still footing the bill. He pleaded for global help in fixing what he called a simmering refugee crisis. On the green front, Gilani sounded the climate alarm. With Pakistan battered by floods, droughts, and rising temperatures, he pitched partnerships with Britain on everything from clean energy to disaster response. Pakistan pushes for deeper ties with SCO
Listen to article Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb on Tuesday reiterated Pakistan's commitment and readiness to enhance cooperation under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to foster economic prosperity, stability and sustainable development across the region. He reaffirmed Pakistan's strong engagement with the organsiation during a virtual address at a meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors of the SCO member states in Beijing. Emphasising the significance of Pakistan's membership of the SCO, he described the organisation as a vital platform for forging cooperation and strengthening economic ties among member countries. He called the SCO Charter and the "Shanghai Spirit" principles as guiding tenets for deepening partnerships and praised the growing SCO role in exploring opportunities for regional development. Aurangzeb highlighted that the SCO has contributed to promoting trade, investment and financial cooperation while reinforcing regional stability and prosperity. He lent Islamabad's support to proposals for undertaking more joint projects, technology transfer and capacity-building initiatives. He also emphasised the importance of digital economy and financial inclusion in driving equitable development and urged for a collective response to global challenges such as economic slowdown, widening inequality and climate change.
