Former RTE star addresses speculation Ryan Tubridy could return to the station

TV and radio star Lucy Kennedy has addressed rumours Ryan Tubridy could return to RTE.
It comes after Ryan announced last Friday that he had paid back the €150,000 overpayment he received from RTE as part of a controversial payment deal made in 2020.
The repayment sparked a rumour that Ryan was paving the way for his return to the national broadcaster.
Lucy, who is a long-time pal of Ryan's, said: 'I love Ryan Tubridy. This is the rumour… do I think he would come back? I don't know. There is a lot that went down. How would he be received as well… I don't know.'
The Living With Lucy host said she would love to see Ryan come back home to Dublin as she misses seeing him around his hometown in Dun Laoghaire.
'Would I like to see him come home? Selfishly yes, definitely. I think he's quite happy in the UK.
'I'd say Ryan will do another year in the UK.' Pictured are Millie Lynam and Lucy Kennedy unveiling the new limited-edition bands in support of Barretstown. The bands will be available in Applegreen stores nationwide from Monday 11th to Sunday 17th August 2025, for just €2, with all proceeds going directly to Barretstown.
Lucy also said she reckons her Classic Hits colleague and former 2FM DJ Colm Hayes was approached to take over Liveline after Joe Duffy's retirement.
'Colm Hayes would be able to take on that gig. I just don't think he would do that to me but he has the empathy of people.
'Colm has the experience as well. I'd say yeah but he tells me nothing. I wouldn't be surprised if he was approached.
'But he would tell me if he was going.
'Colm is a man who can handle all people.'
But she said her money is on Dermot Whelan to be the next presenter.
'My money is on Dermot Whelan. He stood in for Oliver (Callan) recently… I think he would be very good.
'Not everyone loves people. Gerry Ryan loved people, Joe Duffy loved people. You have to have that love and passion for people. I don't think it has to have that huge name. But it has to be someone who cares,' she said.
Lucy was speaking at the launch of Applegreen's nationwide fundraising campaign 'Bands for Barretstown.
This year's campaign will see limited-edition wristbands go on sale in Applegreen stores until Sunday, August 17 for just €2, with all proceeds going directly to Barretstown.
Lucy said: 'Bands for Barretstown is such a great fundraiser for a wonderful charity. I know Applegreen is an incredible supporter of the work that the team in Barretstown do for children and families affected by cancer and other serious illnesses.
'I am hoping that anyone who stops off at their local Applegreen store between 11-17th August to maybe buy petrol, a paper or a coffee will also buy one of the brightly coloured bands and support this worthy charity.'
The design for this year's bands was created by ten-year-old Millie Lynam and features the inspiring message 'Let's Go Barretstown'.
Millie lives in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath, with her parents Eimear and Paul, her brother James (7) and her sister Kitty (4).
She was first introduced to Barretstown as a sibling camper, supporting her younger sister Kitty, who has an extremely rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system.
The family have been to Barretstown for several weekend family camps and has also taken part in Barretstown's Camp at Home Outreach Programme.
Dee Ahearn, CEO of Barretstown, said: 'Since 1994, Barretstown has provided free, medically endorsed therapeutic programmes for children living with cancer and other serious illnesses and their families.
'Millie's message 'Let's Go Barretstown' captures a strong message of hope for so many children and parents going through a difficult time and shows the long-lasting impact that Barretstown's work brings to so many families across the country.
'It's with the support of partners like Applegreen that we continue to grow its reach and impact across Ireland.'

Ryan Tubridy responds to speculation he will run for the Irish Presidency

Ex-RTÉ star Ryan Tubridy has responded to messages from fans asking if he will be running for the Irish Presidency. The father-of-two has confirmed he will not be running for the Áras this year. The presenter, who currently hosts his own mid-morning show on Virgin Radio UK, broke his silence on the matter, confirming he wasn't planning on running for the gig. Taking to Instagram on Saturday, the Dubliner said: 'In answer to many Insta questions, two things I'm NOT doing this weekend: 1) Going to Oasis. 2) Running for President. He added: 'Coffee and crossword for now.' Alongside the comments, Ryan shared a screenshot of a message from a follower which read: 'Come on… run for President!!!! You know middle-aged women vote in Ireland and you know you want to!' Ryan opened up about how tough the Presidential election is in Ireland, saying he is "baffled by the unhinged nature of presidential election coverage". "As someone who has interviewed the last three presidents (and their rivals in the various elections) I am repeatedly taken aback at the level of acrimony, cruelty and let's face it, prurience that goes with the task of running for the Áras," the former RTÉ star wrote in the Mail on Sunday. "The bizarre thing about it is that as soon as the president is elected, the mob stops as if switched off with a button. The President is generally respected and afforded a dignity that tends to go with the ceremonial nature of the august position. "I continue to be baffled by the unhinged nature of presidential election coverage. I understand that there must be scrutiny and that the campaign is one long job interview but is there a need for all that frothing at the mouth? "In the past few days, Mairead McGuinness withdrew her candidacy for health reasons (and I wish her a speedy recovery). For the other candidates (real or imagined) it was gloves off before they barely opened their mouths. The Irish Times went for Tony Holohan as soon as he suggested that his private polling had him at a healthy 15 per cent." The race to the Áras is set to take place in the coming weeks ahead of Michael D Higgins' retirement from the role. President Michael D Higgins will be replaced later this year Among the names hoping for a nomination include Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley, Catherine Connolly, Bertie Ahern, Gareth Sheridan and Mary Lou McDonald. Last week, Mairead McGuinness was forced to pull out of the Presidential Race on medical advice with Catherine Connolly now favourite to win the vote. A presidential election is expected towards the end of October, as it must take place in the 60 days before the term of current president Michael D Higgins ends on November 11. To be eligible to run, a candidate must be an Irish citizen who is 35 or older. They must be nominated either by at least 20 members of the Oireachtas or at least four local authorities. There's still much speculation regarding who could become the next President of Ireland, and now broadcaster Ryan Tubridy has lifted the lid on his intentions. The race to the Áras is set to take place in the coming weeks ahead of Michael D Higgins retirement from the role. The former EU Commissioner was a firm favourite to take over from Higgins later in the year, but confirmed on Thursday that she wouldn't be running. McGuinness cited health grounds for the reason behind the decision, revealed she had spent some time in hospital the week previous. 'I have made the very difficult decision to withdraw my name as the Fine Gael nominee for the Presidential election,' a statement from Ms McGuinness said. 'This decision is not lightly taken and follows a stay in hospital last week.

Champion boxer Barry McGuigan tipped for this season's Living With Lucy

Champion boxer Barry McGuigan could be set to sign up to this season's Living With Lucy. The former I'm A Celebrity star is on the Classic Hit's host's list of celebrities she would love to live with this season, which airs on Virgin Media in October. An insider revealed Adare Productions – the company who produce Living With Lucy – are hoping Barry McGuigan signs up to take part in the show this year. A source: 'The team at Living With Lucy are still filming and we're hoping to get Barry on board to do the show this year.' Barry and Lucy Kennedy co-hosted the RTE reality show Charity Lords of the Ring in 2009. The show followed 10 celebrities as they trained for and participated in boxing matches to raise money for charity. McGuigan, 64, provided his expertise, while Kennedy presented the show. (Image: ITV/REX/Shutterstock) That year, McGuigan praised the Dublin host, saying Lucy, who was pregnant at the time, was 'a dream to work with'. He wrote in the Irish Independent's celebrity diary at the time: 'Lucy Kennedy has been a dream to work with. She's just a lovely, beautiful woman, full of life and energy. 'I wasn't at all worried that she might go into labour on set, sure I'm a father-of-four myself, so I'm pretty experienced when it comes to the delivery of babies.' It comes after Lucy accidentally revealed on her social media that Keeping Up With The Kardashians star Caitlyn Jenner, 75, will be taking part on the show. The Sunday World previously revealed Lucy posted a picture of a swimming pool on her Instagram stories, and a reverse image showed it was the star's Malibu home.
