The IRS broke its own rules when it fired thousands of employees earlier this year on the orders of the Trump administration, the Treasury Department's internal watchdog agency found last week. The hires were part of a large-scale overhaul of the agency initiated by Democrats in 2022 as part of their Inflation Reduction Act. That legislation awarded the agency an initial $80 billion funding boost to be spent over the subsequent decade. More than half of the initial money — $45 billion — was earmarked for extra tax enforcement, specifically increased audits for wealthy Americans. The IRS even set up a new division to go after complex partnerships, or nested legal entities that can shelter funds that are owed to the government. Auditing sophisticated companies requires skilled staff, and the IRS had just started hiring a first tranche of personnel to make that happen, many of whom were in their trial period at the agency when they got canned by the Trump administration. When they got fired, they were told it was for performance reasons, but TIGTA found on Thursday that the agency didn't take performance into account when issuing pink slips. 'Termination letters cited performance as a reason for termination; however, the IRS did not consider individual performance when deciding which employees to terminate,' TIGTA concluded. The Trump administration has declared an all-out bureaucratic war on public sector unions, firing employees at many different government agencies through a special cost-cutting panel. Last week, courts gave the go-ahead to the administration's plan to do away with collective bargaining rights at a number of agencies. It's not clear whether TIGTA's report presents a legal vulnerability for the Trump administration, but public sector unions are showing the resolve to fight for their jobs. 'Our friends with the VA have had their union contract terminated. They've had their rights to collective bargaining stripped. This is, we think, an illegal action,' Daniel Scharpenburg, vice president of the National Treasury Employee Union Chapter 66, said in a social media video posted last week, encouraging fellow union members to rally. Republicans worked throughout the back half of the Biden administration to kill the IRS funding boost, clawing back an initial $20 billion before eventually freezing the rest of the audit funding through what was likely a stealth negotiating maneuver. Biden administration officials told The Hill last year they had known about that loophole in the appropriations process and worked to prevent rescissions with requests to Congress. For perspective, here's the RMD on this amount of money for a range of ages. 73: $3,773.58 75: $4,065.04 80: $4,950.50 85: $6,250.00 90: $8,196.72 And the number continues rising all the way until you turn 120, at which point your RMD is always 50% of your IRA's value as of the end of the prior calendar year. Housekeeping Your broker or IRA's custodian can provide you with the information you need to determine your yearly RMD. Just know that it's your responsibility to initiate the distribution. There's also some flexibility in how you take your RMD. For instance, you might be able to combine the value of multiple retirement accounts yet take your entire required distribution from just one; 401(k) accounts are an exception to this option, though. You're also allowed to take an in-kind distribution of investments already in your IRA, if you like, rather than taking your RMD in cash. Just be aware that doing so won't change the taxability of your distribution, which the IRS sees and treats as income. As for timing, RMDs should be completed by Dec. 31. The one exception is your first one, which doesn't need to be done until April 1 of the year after you turn 73. You might not want to wait that long, though. Your tax bill comes due for the year the RMD is completed. By waiting, you'll be making two required taxable distributions in the same tax year, potentially pushing you into a higher tax bracket. The result has been record-high prices on the wholesale market. Growers blamed the lower yields on scorching-hot temperatures that hit the Kyoto region during the summer of 2024, Japan's second-consecutive hottest year on record. "Last year's summer was so hot that it damaged the bushes, so we couldn't pluck as many tea leaves," Masahiro Yoshida, a sixth-generation farmer, told Reuters. Compounded with issues around tariffs in the U.S., the industry is facing major headwinds, and some matcha-specializing tea shops have had to make difficult decisions about whether to stay in business when supply is short, with some temporarily closing at times. What's happening? Global demand for matcha has taken off in recent years, as influencers and marketers have touted the beverage's health benefits while associating the drink with a trendy, upscale lifestyle. With the global matcha market having reached $3.3 billion in 2023, experts project that it will nearly double to $6.2 billion by 2032, according to SkyQuest Technology Group, a market-intelligence provider. Seemingly, the only thing capable of slowing the world's thirst for matcha has been the supply of matcha itself. Matcha is made from tencha, stemless tea leaves that are processed via a precise, exacting method before being ground into a fine powder. In 2024, Japanese farmers produced 5,336 tons of tencha, nearly three times the annual production of just 10 years prior, according to Reuters. Yet even this dramatic growth in production has been unable to meet the skyrocketing demand. Tealife, a Singapore-based company, saw demand for matcha from its customers go up tenfold in 2024 alone. Even without a dramatic price shock like the one currently impacting the matcha market, lower crop yields mean higher grocery prices for everyone. What's being done about the price of matcha? To address the surging demand, tea farmers in Japan have begun devoting more land to matcha production, but the plants will take five years to mature to the point where they can produce a usable harvest, according to Reuters. Additionally, countries such as China and Vietnam have been increasing their own matcha production, increasing global supplies. However, the labor-intensive and highly specialized methods involved in matcha production, including growing the plants in shade for at least 20 days prior to harvest, make ramping up production both slow and expensive. Additionally, even as more land is devoted to matcha production, ever-increasing global temperatures will continue to negatively impact yields. All of which suggests that the matcha industry might not be able to grow its way out of this problem. "I suspect we'll see even more dramatic price increases," Mark Falzon, who imports Kyoto-area matcha for his New Jersey-based business, told Reuters.
