Country singer Walker Hayes was ready to ‘self-destruct' after daughter's funeral service
Country singer, Walker Hayes, is opening up about a painful period in his life that almost led him to lose his sobriety.
During a recent appearance on the 'K-Love Morning Show,' the 45-year-old singer discussed the loss of his seventh child, his daughter Oakleigh, who was born and died on the same day in June 2018.
He was two-and-a-half years sober at the time, but recalled coming home from the cemetery after her funeral, feeling ready 'to just … self-destruct.'
'I drove to a bar called 55 South, and I looked through the window and there were three guys at the bar,' he continued, 'And I was like, 'I'm gonna get a little buzz and I'm going to just mess with those guys. I'm just gonna get in a fight with those guys.''

Looking back, Hayes can admit 'it makes zero sense.'
He recalled that before getting out of the car, he realized he didn't have his wallet with him and ended up driving back home.
Upon arriving home, Hayes had a change of heart, when he looked through a window and saw his wife, Laney, sitting in their house alone.

'My wife, sadly, was just sitting by herself, on the day she's buried her daughter. My kids are I don't know where, and she's just in the dark,' Hayes says. 'I could literally see what I was about to do.'
'She's gonna have to pick me up from jail the next day. We were gonna have to start the rehab process all over, you know, and go back to square one,' he continued. 'That was some sin in me that I just saw clearly, and thought, 'I need a savior.' I need redemption from myself.'
His daughter Oakleigh died during childbirth on June 6, 2018, after his wife suffered a uterine rupture.

In addition to Oakleigh, the couple has six other children: sons Beckett, Baylor and Chapel, and daughters Everly, Loxley and Lela, all of whom are often featured on the singer's Instagram.

The 'Fancy Like' singer has been vocal about his struggles with alcoholism in the past, often writing about his experiences in his songs.
In 2024, Hayes released an album entitled 'Sober Thoughts,' which included songs discussing his experience abusing alcohol.
While promoting the album, he appeared on 'Today with Hoda and Jenna' and spoke with the hosts about the moment he decided to get sober after struggling with alcohol abuse for 20 years.

'I just woke up on a Saturday, and I just knew if I did this one more day, my body would be affected, some organ,' he explained. 'I'm not a scientist, I'm not a doctor. I just woke up, and it felt like if I do it one more day, I might die.'
He explained that while 'everybody loves a drinking song,' he loves singing about his sobriety journey, writing one song a week about his 'freedom from addiction,' because of how grateful he is.
'Sobriety, when you've been drunk that long, you get addicted to it — the clarity, the pep in your step,' he said on the show. 'You go to the gym and you're like, 'I feel like I'm 17.''

Chad Michael Murray almost didn't make it to Hollywood. The 'Freakier Friday' actor, 43, revealed he suffered a near-death experience at age 15 that involved an emergency blood transfusion and a lengthy hospital stay. It was a lot,' he recalled on the Friday, August 8, episode of the 'Great Company' podcast. 'We had surgery. I had internal bleeding, [and] I lost 50 percent of my blood. I was on my deathbed,' the actor explained, adding he was 'in and out of consciousness' and doesn't have many memories from that time. Celebrities React To Dean Cain Joining ICE
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been ramping up efforts to find new recruits, like offering student loan forgiveness, $50,000 signing bonuses, lowering qualifications, and recruitment videos from known MAGA-lebrities like this actor who was once well-known for playing Superman. Actor Dean Cain, best known for playing Superman in the early '90s series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, has been a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump and has now joined ICE. On Aug. 6, he told Jesse Watters on Fox, "I put out a recruitment video yesterday. I'm actually a sworn deputy sheriff and a reserve police officer. I wasn't part of ICE, but once I put that out there and you put a little blurb on your show, it went crazy. So now I've spoken with some of the officials over at ICE, and I will be sworn in as an ICE agent ASAP. So they'll have 88,001 recruits for their 10,000 positions." Dean said he plans to do whatever Director of ICE, Todd Lyons, wants him to do, because he believes "This country was built on patriots stepping up, whether it was popular or not, and doing the right thing." In an Aug. 8 Instagram video, actor and activist John Leguizamo slammed Dean, saying, "What kind of loser volunteers to be an ICE officer? What a moron. Dean Cain, your pronouns are has/been." John is a longtime advocate for representation, even recently celebrating the diversity of the slate of nominees on stage at the 2024 Emmys. "For years I didn't complain about the limited roles my people were offered… Turns out not complaining doesn't change anything. So for the past few years, I've been complaining." In response to John's video calling Dean a "has been" Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr. in the latest Superman movie, responded that he "never was." Tatum O'Neal, the youngest person to ever win an Academy Award in 1974, responded with six clapping emojis. Director Lee Daniels simply laughed at John's statement. Comedian Margaret Cho blasted Dean for joining ICE in an Instagram video. "Why would you join ICE and encourage people to join ICE when your ancestors were interned in World War II?" she asked. "You're Japanese. You're not even white... I know you, and you are not white. You have never been white. And no matter how many of these white activities that you participate in, it's never going to make that happen... No matter how racist you are, no matter how wrong you act... Always wrong, never white." Margaret is referring to the fact that Dean, born Dean Tanaka, is half-Japanese on his father's side. "Tanaka is my given name, and it's funny that people are like, 'Well, you tried to hide that.' It's tattooed on my ankle,' he said in a July 2025 interview with Variety. 'My family was interned in the Minidoka internment camp in Idaho. That was a horrible injustice, but I don't think that I deserve any sort of reparations."
