Inabel weavers exhibit ‘Ilocano Shark'-inspired logo ahead of Palaro 2025
Woven by Jeanette Rico and Mary Anne Caoagas, Inabel weavers from Barangay Nalasin in Paoay, the fabric showcases the official icon of the Palarong Pambansa 2025 crafted on traditional wooden loom machines.
Small iterations of the tournament logo–a pixelated figure that takes after the silhouette of Ilocano swimming legend Teofilo Yldefonso in his iconic hands-on-the-waist pose during the 1928 Olympics– were delicately handwoven on the white Abel cloth in red and blue threads.
According to a shared Facebook post by Ilocos Norte Tourism and Ilocos Norte-Palarong Pambansa, the symbol is an homage to the Ilocano breaststroke swimmer– himself a two-time Olympic bronze getter– which 'embodies the triumphs born of perseverance, and the heritage that threads every Ilocano victory.'
Yldefonso was a highly decorated swimmer from Piddig, Ilocos Norte, and the first Filipino to have won an Olympic medal when he bagged bronze during the 1928 Summer Games in Amsterdam.
The 65th Palarong Pambansa, the country's largest sports event for student-athletes in elementary and high school, will be held in Laoag, Ilocos Norte from May 24 to May 31, 2025.

World Athletics mandates gene test for female category eligibility
Athletes will be eligible to compete in the female category for world ranking competitions such as the World Championships only if they clear a one-time gene test in a bid to protect the integrity of women's sport, World Athletics said on Wednesday. The once-in-a-lifetime test for the SRY gene, which helps in determining biological sex, can be conducted via a cheek swab or blood test. The testing protocol will be overseen by member federations and the new regulations come into effect on September 1, ahead of the September 13-21 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. "It is really important in a sport that is permanently trying to attract more women that they enter a sport believing there is no biological glass ceiling," World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said in a statement. "The test to confirm biological sex is a very important step in ensuring this is the case. We are saying, at elite level, for you to compete in the female category, you have to be biologically female. "It was always very clear to me and the World Athletics Council that gender cannot trump biology. We particularly want to thank our member federations for their support and commitment in the implementation of these new regulations." Athletics has spent years debating eligibility criteria to compete in women's events, amid questions over biological advantages for transgender athletes and those with differences of sex development (DSD). World Athletics bans transgender women who have gone through male puberty from competing in women's events, while it requires female DSD athletes whose bodies produce high testosterone levels to lower them in order to be eligible. Earlier this year, a working group found that those rules were not tight enough, with a pre-clearance test for the SRY gene being one of several recommendations the group made for revised rules. The SRY gene reveals the presence of the Y chromosome, which is an indicator of biological sex. The test was also approved by World Boxing in May when they introduced mandatory sex testing for all boxers. Earlier this month, the European Court upheld a 2023 ruling that double 800-meter Olympic champion Caster Semenya's appeal to a Swiss Federal Tribunal against regulations that barred her from competing had not been properly heard. Semenya was appealing against World Athletics regulations that female athletes with DSDs medically reduce their testosterone levels. —Reuters

Venus Williams part of star-filled U.S. Open mixed-doubles event
The mixed-doubles field at the U.S. Open, which begins next month in New York, will be a star-studded event. The United States Tennis Association announced Tuesday the eight teams receiving direct entries into the tournament, as well as six wild-card entrants. Two more teams will take part as wild cards. Venus Williams, 45, received a wild-card entry and will play with big-serving American Reilly Opelka. The former World No. 1 in singles, Williams is an accomplished doubles player on the biggest stages. She won two Grand Slam mixed-doubles titles in 1998, as well as three Olympic gold medals and 14 Grand Slam women's doubles events with her younger sister, Serena. Venus played on the WTA Tour last week for the first time since March 2024 at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. After becoming the oldest player to win a WTA Tour singles match in 21 years, she lost in the second round in Washington to Magdalena Frech of Poland. Marcos said these athletes have become models of the youth as he vowed to continue investing in sports programs. "Dahil sa mga ito, ang ating kabataan ay maagang namumulat sa isports, humuhusay, at tumataas ang kumpiyansa. Sumusunod sila sa yapak ng ating mga kampeon at world-class na athlete: tulad ni Senator Manny Pacquiao, ni Hidilyn Diaz, ni Caloy Yulo, Aira Villegas, Nesthy Petecio, EJ Obiena, Alex Eala; ang paralympians natin na sina Jerrold Mangliwan, Cendy Asusano, Angel Mae Otom, at Ernie Gawilan," he said.
