BJD slams State govt for not observing World Tribal Day

Bhubaneswar: The Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) criticised the Mohan Charan Majhi government in Odisha for not observing the World Tribal Day, officially known as International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. The BJD celebrated the day at its party office here. Holding a press conference, senior BJD leader Sudam Marndi said the entire world is celebrating the day, but the Odisha government neither observed the day nor did the Chief Minister issue a statement for the tribals. 'Though the Chief Minister belongs to the tribal community, he did not issue a message for the tribals on this day, which is highly unfortunate,' Marndi said. While the day is being celebrated in a massive way in neighbouring West Bengal, no programme was organised in Odisha, he said. Another tribal BJD leader, Mangala Kisan, alleged that the indigenous people in the State are facing extreme neglect under a tribal Chief Minister, and the government is only busy telling lies. The government had promised the economic and social development of the tribals, but it has taken several decisions that went against the community, he claimed. The BJP government in the State slashed the budget of the Tribal Development department and stopped the stipend of tribal students, Kisan alleged. If the government does not change its approach towards tribals, there will be severe protests in the coming days, he warned.

Tripura BJP's tribal leaders in Delhi to meet party's central leadership

The move is assumed significant in view of the ongoing stalemate in the election of the BJP's state president and the cancellation of a programme by the party's tribal wing – Janajati Morcha – on International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples on August 9. Janajati Morcha state president Parimal Debbarma and state's Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, BJP general secretary Bipin Debbarma, are part of the team. Agartala, Aug 10 (PTI) A six-member team of BJP's tribal leaders in Tripura will meet the party's central leadership in New Delhi over the organisational and development issues, a party functionary said on Sunday. The party had already completed the organisational election from booth to district levels, but the state president is yet to be elected. 'We are in Delhi to meet the party's organisational general secretary BL Santosh, our national president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. We will have discussions with the party's central leadership on organisational matters and development issues,' former MP Rebati Tripura told PTI over the telephone. Although he refused to elaborate on the organisational matters, the ex-MP said the BJP-led government in the state has taken several steps for the development of the indigenous people. 'We will discuss how to streamline the process to give more benefits to the tribal people in our state,' he said. However, he did not specify why the Janajati Morcha had cancelled the programme to mark International Day for the World's Indigenous Peoples on August 9. The Janajati Morcha had announced that it would organise a rally in the state's capital and a programme on the occasion. However, the BJP ally Tipra Motha Party (TMP) had organised a rally in West Tripura's Khumulwng area to mark the occasion. PTI PS BDC This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. CNC demands indigenous status for the community

Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) organised a peaceful satyagraha in front of the DC office in Madikeri, demanding indigenous status for the Kodava tribe. The silent protest was organised as part of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, observed annually on Aug 9. Adorning traditional attire, CNC members gathered in front of the DC office to demand various rights for the Kodava community. Speaking after the protest, CNC president NU Nachappa said, "The peaceful satyagraha is being organised continuously to draw the govt's attention to attain indigenous status for the Kodava tribe, who are deprived of their constitutional rights. Kodavas belong to the indigenous tribal community, the original inhabitants of this sacred Kodava land. Our historical continuity in this soil should be legally recognised. The Kodava habitat, Kodavaland, ancestral ancient lands, political-cultural rights, folk identity, sacred groves, and the sacred pilgrimage site of the Talacauvery should be constitutionally protected by the World Organisation under the rights of indigenous peoples as per international law." He demanded various rights for the community, including protection of Kodava land and ancestral sites, exemptions from Arms Act, inclusion of Kodava language under the 8th schedule of the Constitution, introduction of the Kodava language in the curriculum and administration, inclusion of Kodava folk culture in the Unesco list of intangible cultural heritage, and SC tag for the community. Several other resolutions, including war memorials at Nalknad Palace and Madikeri Fort, were taken at the event. A memorandum addressed to the secretary general of the Unesco was handed over to the district administration. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
