SATURDAY Betway Premiership
Kaizer Chiefs v Polokwane City
Chiefs chase MTN8 spot and stability in season finale
🕒 3pm | 📍 FNB Stadium, Johannesburg
Kaizer Chiefs' season finale at FNB Stadium on Saturday against Polokwane City could determine the trajectory of both their immediate future and that of coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Despite ending a decade-long trophy drought with their recent Nedbank Cup win, Chiefs' inconsistent league form has left them at risk of missing out on next season's MTN8. Speculation is rife that Nabi could be shown the door—unless a strong finish sways the club's hierarchy. Victory over Polokwane could offer both a glimmer of redemption and much-needed stability.
Prediction: Kaizer Chiefs 2 Polokwane City 1
Betting odds: Kaizer Chiefs win 1.75 | Draw 3.25 | Polokwane City win 5.20 Magesi FC v Marumo Gallants FC
Confident Magesi eye safety against struggling Gallants
🕒 3pm | 📍 Seshego Stadium, Polokwane
Magesi FC are not yet mathematically safe from relegation, but they head into their final two matches of the season with growing confidence. They have shown impressive form in the second half of the campaign and will look to continue that momentum when they face Marumo Gallants at the Seshego Stadium.
Owen da Gama's charges were recently outclassed by a rampant Mamelodi Sundowns side chasing an eighth consecutive league title. However, needing just a point to secure their top-flight status, Magesi have already done much of the hard work and should be well-positioned to see out the season above the drop zone.
Prediction: Magesi FC to win 1-0
Betting odds: Magesi FC win 2.44 | Draw 2.90 | Marumo Gallants win 3.20
SuperSport United v Richards Bay FC
Relegation-scrapping SuperSport host relaxed Richards Bay
🕒 3pm | 📍 Lucas Moripe Stadium, Pretoria
Matsatsantsa a Pitori find themselves deep in a relegation battle, with their turbulent season now set to go down to the wire. Currently sitting 14th on the log by virtue of goal difference, their clash against the already-safe Natal Rich Boys is a must-win affair.
SuperSport will take heart from having already secured two victories over the KwaZulu-Natal outfit this season—once in the league and again in the Nedbank Cup. With Richards Bay having little at stake, United may just find the edge needed to grind out a crucial result.
Prediction: SuperSport United to win 1-0
Betting odds: SuperSport United win 1.84 | Draw 3.10 | Richards Bay FC win 4.90 Cape Town City v Stellenbosch FC
Survival or African dreams as Cape Derby decides fates
🕒 3pm | 📍 Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town
Cape Town City face a monumental task to avoid the promotion/relegation play-offs. Nothing less than a win against Stellenbosch at Cape Town Stadium will do in their final fixture of the season.
Stellenbosch, however, have their eyes on a third-place finish and qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup. A win secures it; a draw or loss leaves them relying on Sekhukhune United to lose to Golden Arrows—an unlikely scenario. For City, rooted to the bottom of the log, even victory might not be enough to avoid the dreaded play-offs.
Prediction: Cape Town City 1 Stellenbosch FC 1 Betting odds: Cape Town City win 3.65 | Draw 3.15 | Stellenbosch FC win 2.09
AmaZulu v Orlando Pirates
Pirates focus on form as AmaZulu eye MTN8 lifeline
🕒 3pm | 📍 Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban
Orlando Pirates head to Durban with second place in the Betway Premiership already secured, while AmaZulu are fighting to hold on to eighth spot and a place in next season's MTN8.
Arthur Zwane's Usuthu have won two of their last four and are showing improved form at just the right time. Pirates, adjusting to life after José Riveiro's sudden exit, may rotate their squad slightly with one eye on recent fatigue.
However, the Buccaneers remain dangerous, having won four of their last five league outings. With both sides motivated by contrasting objectives, this clash promises to deliver intensity and drama in equal measure.
Prediction: Draw 1-1 Betting odds: AmaZulu win 5.20 | Draw 3.50 | Orlando Pirates win 1.68 Golden Arrows v Sekhukhune United
Survival meets African qualification in nerve-racking finale
🕒 3pm | 📍 Mpumalanga Stadium, Durban
It's do-or-die for Golden Arrows as they host Sekhukhune United in their final Betway Premiership match, needing a win to avoid the relegation play-offs.
Arrows are winless in seven and sit just one point above the drop zone, with their top-flight survival hanging by a thread. The return of Manqoba Mngqithi sparked brief optimism, but the pressure is now at its peak.
Sekhukhune, on the other hand, are chasing a CAF Confederation Cup berth. They must win and hope Stellenbosch drop points against Cape Town City. With high stakes for both sides, expect a fiercely contested and emotionally charged encounter.
Prediction: Draw 1-1
Betting odds: Golden Arrows win 2.95 | Draw 3.10 | Sekhukhune United win 2.44

CAF Champions League final, first leg
Mamelodi Sundowns v Pyramids FC
Battle-hardened Sundowns aim to strike first in CAF final
🕒 6pm | 📍 Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria
Mamelodi Sundowns, the 2014–15 CAF Champions League winners, host Egypt's Pyramids FC in the first leg of the final at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday evening. Having fallen short in the knockout stages over the past six seasons, the Brazilians are back in the final and full of confidence.
Rhulani Mokwena's side are on an eight-match unbeaten run across all competitions, displaying their resilience and class throughout the campaign. The visiting Pyramids, runners-up in the 2019–20 CAF Confederation Cup, are contesting their first-ever Champions League final—an impressive feat for the emerging Cairo-based club.
However, the Egyptians' poor away form is cause for concern. They have suffered multiple defeats on the road in this competition and often struggle in front of goal when travelling. With experience, momentum and home advantage in their favour, Sundowns are tipped to take control of the tie.
Prediction: Mamelodi Sundowns 2 Pyramids FC 1
Betting odds: Mamelodi Sundowns win 1.73 | Draw 3.16 | Pyramids FC win 5.13

Ballon d'Or 'should go to Champions League winner', says Ronaldo

MUNICH, Germany - Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo said Saturday the individual honour should be awarded to a player who won the Champions League. Speaking ahead of Sunday's Nations League final in Munich between Portugal and Spain, the veteran said "trophies" should determine who wins the Ballon d'Or. "In my opinion, whoever wins it should be on a team that has won trophies. The Ballon d'Or winner should be in a team that has won the Champions League," the 40-year-old forward told reporters. First awarded in 1956 by French magazine France Football, the Ballon d'Or is awarded to the player considered the best over the previous season. Paris Saint-Germain's 5-0 thumping of Inter Milan in the Champions League final last Saturday led to growing calls for Ousmane Dembele to win this season's gong. Spain starlet Lamine Yamal's superb display in Thursday's 5-4 Nations League semi-final win over France however had some arguing the teenager should be awarded the Ballon d'Or, which would make the 17-year-old the youngest winner in its history. France coach Didier Deschamps backed Dembele for the award, saying "considering the season Ousmane is having, he deserves it and that's all I wish for him". At a press conference in Stuttgart on Saturday, France captain Kylian Mbappe told reporters he backed Dembele. "Does anyone really need me to explain? Right now we're talking about Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembele, but I'm voting for Dembele." Ronaldo said he "cannot tell you who deserves it" this season. Ronaldo's five wins is bettered only by Argentinian Lionel Messi, who has won the award eight times. The duo had a monopoly on the award for a decade from Ronaldo's first win in 2008 to his last in 2017. The current holder is Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Why in-demand Fawaaz Basadien should steer clear of Kaizer Chiefs

Basadien's possible future move Stellenbosch FC defender and stand-in Bafana Bafana captain Fawaaz Basadien is in demand after an impressive season for his club. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Fawaaz Basadien is the man of the moment in South African football currently. The left back, arguably the best in the country, was named Stellenbosch FC's Player of the Season recently after some impressive form for the Cape Winelands side. The cherry on top for Basadien was the 27-year-old being named as the stand-in skipper for Bafana Bafana, as Ronwen Williams is away at the FIFA Club World Cup. It's been a good year for the former Moroka Swallows man. Naturally, the monied clubs in Gauteng have been lining up and are interested in his services. According to reports, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates all want to sign him. Not many local footballers get a chance to pick between one of the big three. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading Addressing those rumours ahead of Bafana's game against Tanzania on Friday, the defender said: 'Obviously, all the rumours and stuff are nice to have as a player. But my main focus is to use whatever opportunity I get to play and keep doing what I do and keep improving every day. 'So, whatever happens in the background is just part of the rumours that have been created. But for me, in football, there comes a time where you want to achieve greater things – maybe play for the so-called big teams or make big moves.' So, with that being said, where should he go next? For many, the logical answer would be Mamelodi Sundowns. At Chloorkop, Basadien would land in a very stable situation, where every player knows what is expected of them and clear goals are set. While Sundowns supporters are passionate about their club, they're not as vocal and opinionated as those from other clubs. If he struggles to settle in, they would be patient enough to give him time to get used to his new surroundings. The same can't be said about fans of the Soweto clubs. While Pirates are more settled as a football operation, Chiefs are not. The club have just finished outside of the top half for a second successive season and are in desperate need of open-heart surgery. Kaizer Chiefs would be completely the wrong move for a player who is starting to make a name for himself on the international stage. And we all know how quickly Chiefs supporters can turn on players who don't hit the ground running. Basadien must think carefully now. He's not a youngster anymore, and this next move could define the rest of his career. A switch to Sundowns makes sense if he wants silverware and structure, but he'll have to fight for his place every week. Pirates might offer him that balance – game time and prestige – while Chiefs, honestly, look like a gamble right now. Whatever he chooses, the ball's at his feet. And in South African football, that's a rare kind of power. Bafana coach Hugo Broos happy with performances of newcomers in draw with Tanzania

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was satisfied with the performances of some of the new players during the 0-0 international friendly draw with Tanzania at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday. Broos handed out a number of debuts in his new-look Bafana side and he was happy with the way they accounted for themselves despite playing together for the first time for the national team. In what turned out to be a dull match played under cold conditions in Polokwane, Broos gave starting opportunities to Ricardo Goss, Deano van Rooyen, Thabo Moloisane, Kulumane Ndamane, Fawaaz Basadien, Simphiwe Selepe, Tshepang Moremi and Ashley Cupido. Some of the these players ordinarily would not have been considered but they benefited from the absence of their Mamelodi Sundowns counterparts who leave at the weekend for the Fifa Club World Cup in the US. 'After every game we give jerseys to players who were earning their first cap and we gave about eight after this match,' he said as he reflected on the share of the spoils with the Taifa Stars.
