Switch without a hitch: 34 metro networks to integrate with 39 suburban stations

Hindustan Times3 days ago
MUMBAI: A plan to link the city's suburban railway stations with the expanding metro network is beginning to take shape. The integration will let Mumbaikars switch seamlessly between suburban trains, metros, monorails, buses and even pod taxis, potentially cutting travel times, easing crowding, and improving daily travel comfort. Switch without a hitch: 34 metro networks to integrate with 39 suburban stations
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), in coordination with Indian Railways and other state agencies, has identified 34 metro stations — both operational and under construction — that will be integrated with 39 suburban railway stations on the Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) corridors. The integration will also extend to the Monorail and the proposed pod taxi system at the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).
A joint committee of officials from Indian Railways and state agencies has been formed to oversee this Multi Modal Integration (MMI) programme. The first meeting, to be held later this month at Central Railway's headquarters at CSMT, will discuss station redesigns, passenger handling capacity, and lessons from poorly planned interchanges.
'Multimodal integration is the backbone of efficient public transportation. We have mapped out several metro stations for seamless connection with suburban rail, and are also working on links to large commercial spaces to improve last-mile connectivity,' said Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.
Key integrations planned
The blueprint covers 14 stations on WR and 22 on CR, plus a new proposed suburban station near Thane. The BKC pod taxi system will link both Kurla West and Bandra East stations, while Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail station will connect to Mahalaxmi station on WR.
Railway officials say the focus will be on preventing congestion and bottlenecks. 'We've seen the drawbacks of unplanned connectivity at Ghatkopar and Andheri, where queues for the Metro spill over onto railway foot overbridges. This time, we want advanced planning and adequate holding areas,' said a senior railway official.
Work is already underway at some locations — for example, Ghatkopar is adding two new concourses to improve interchange movement. Station upgrades will include larger elevated decks, wider footpaths, designated parking for buses and autos, better pedestrian crossings, improved signages, and smoother road junctions within a 500-metre radius of the stations.
A detailed passenger footfall study will be conducted to understand travel patterns, peak-hour loads, and the scale of interchange facilities needed. 'Simply building a foot overbridge will not work anymore. The infrastructure must be designed for the volume we expect once two mass transit systems meet,' an official said.

Historic Ride: Why Indias First Hydrogen Train Launch Is A Landmark Moment? Heres Why It Matters

India is about to take a big leap towards green transport with the upcoming rollout of its first hydrogen train. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has today given a peek into the path-breaking loco on social media site X (Earlier Twitter), marking a big step toward greener railways. With this achievement, India stands to be a part of an exclusive club of countries – Germany, France, Sweden, and China – that have been able to implement hydrogen technology in the railway system. The first commercial run of India's hydrogen train is scheduled on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, which will prove to be a milestone achievement for green mobility in India. Bharat's First Hydrogen Train Coming soon… — Ashwini Vaishnaw (@AshwiniVaishnaw) August 12, 2025 Important Facts Regarding India's First Hydrogen Train: As per Indian Railways, the new hydrogen fuel train is planned to be one of the world's most powerful and longest such trains, with a whopping capability of carrying 2,600 passengers. This comes after the successful trial run of its first hydrogen fuel train coach at Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF) recently. In July, Minister Vaishnaw had posted a video of these trials, highlighting India's zeal for a "future-ready and sustainable India." He had also earlier said, "India is making a 1,200 HP Hydrogen train. This will make India one of the leaders in Hydrogen powered train technology." Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, Vaishnaw presented ambitious proposals for 35 hydrogen trains as part of the 'Hydrogen for Heritage' project. Each train is estimated to be about Rs 80 crore, and an extra Rs 70 crore is being earmarked for infrastructure building particularly for heritage and hill routes. The endeavour includes a pioneering pilot project, refitting a diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) rake with hydrogen fuel cells. Accompanying this eco-friendly project, Indian Railways is also working on holistic infrastructure, including a hybrid plant for hydrogen production, storage, and dispensing to facilitate smooth train movements. In addition, five Hydrogen Fuel Cell Based Tower Cars, each priced at Rs 10 crore, are being developed for maintenance. For the Haryana corridor, hydrogen will be fed by a 1-megawatt (MW) Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyser that will be based in Jind. GreenH Electrolysis, the entity engaged, said that the electrolyser would run continuously and would generate around 430 kg of hydrogen per day. The refuelling infrastructure that will go along with it at Jind will have a 3,000 kg hydrogen storage capacity, a hydrogen compressor, and two hydrogen dispensers with integrated pre-cooler to enable quick refuelling of the trains.

SCR's ‘round trip package' at 20% discount

South Central Railway (SCR) has announced the launch of an experimental 'Round Trip Package' scheme by the Indian Railways to manage the festive season rush, offering discounted fares this year. This scheme is applicable to passengers who choose to book their return journey within a prescribed period. The discount will apply only when both onward and return journeys are booked together for the same set of passengers — with identical passenger details for both legs of the journey. Bookings under this scheme will open on August 14 for trains departing between October 13 and October 26. Return journey tickets can be booked using the connecting journey feature for travel dates between November 17 and December 1. Notably, the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) will not apply to return journey bookings under this scheme. This offer is valid only for confirmed tickets in both directions. A 20% rebate will be granted on the base fare of the return journey, provided the same class and the same originating and destination stations are maintained for both legs. There will be no refund for tickets purchased under this scheme. It is applicable to all classes and all trains, including special trains (trains on demand), but excludes trains with flexi fares. Additionally, no modifications will be allowed for either leg of the journey once booked. Concessional passes will not be admissible for return journey bookings under this scheme. Furthermore, both onward and return journey tickets must be booked using the same mode — either online or at reservation counters, according to a press release.
