Regional journalists use palace reception to stress importance of local news

Independent26-03-2025

Veteran local news reporters have used a royal reception to make the case to the King for regional journalism's survival.
The King and Queen hosted 400 guests from various UK news organisations at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday to show support for local news.
Charles was welcomed by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and a gathering of leading media professionals, including Tony James, 89, thought to be the UK's oldest working journalist.
Mr James, who still writes for the West Somerset Free Press, told the King that local journalism – despite its struggles to stay relevant and profitable in the online world – remains 'very valuable'.
He added: 'Print journalism is being phased out – it's been destroyed by digital, which is a great shame.'
Some 293 local newspapers closed down between 2005 and 2024, according to research from the Press Gazette.
BBC presenter Sally Taylor, 69, the longest-serving female presenter at the corporation, sparked laughter with a remark about her decades on screen.
Ms Taylor, who has presented BBC South Today for nearly 40 years, said: 'It was lovely talking with the King.
'We shared a good joke – I said, 'Forty years, not bad for an old bird,' and he laughed.'
ITV News producer Rob McNulty showed the King rare footage from nearly 50 years ago of Charles bringing HMS Bronington into Workington Harbour.
Mr McNulty, 49, unearthed the reels from the University of Cumbria's archive.
He said: 'I had the video teed up on my phone, ready in my pocket. I wasn't sure if you're supposed to get your phone out — but he didn't object.
'He remembered the visit and even recalled going to the Workington Working Men's Club. It was a great moment.'
Charles, who has been an honorary life member of the London Press Club since 1978, told those gathered: 'I have long believed that regional media, in all its forms, has a unique and vital role to play in society, perhaps even more so in these uncertain times.'
He recalled his speech in 2002, marking the 300th anniversary of Britain's first daily national newspaper, in which he said the press, alongside other long-standing institutions, were at the forefront of 'defining, describing and celebrating the more profound values of our nation'.
'Two decades on, when too much focus is given to that which divides us, that role for your whole industry is more important than ever – and it starts from the ground up, at local level, in your hands', he said.
'Your reporting, and the work of all those who support you, helps amplify and reaffirm the rights and responsibilities we all share.
'It shines a light in dark corners, exposing injustice and wrongdoing.'
He added: 'Above all, it helps strengthen our communities, in times of joy and at moments of sorrow.
'You won't always get it right: A free media is one that will and does make mistakes, but at its best it is a cornerstone of our democracy.'
The King recognised that many outlets have adapted to a changed media landscape that has been affected by 'commercial pressures and changing technologies'.
This included by finding ways to engage audiences in 'new and creative' ways.
He added: 'It is in everyone's interests that you should succeed. For without a thriving and financially robust regional media, we would all be the poorer.'
Camilla is patron of The Journalists' Charity as well as the Guild of St Bride's, which is based at St Bride's Church on Fleet Street and is otherwise known as the journalists' church.

Around 60 minutes later, two cop cars turned up. He was driven away and spent two nights in a police cell before appearing in court on Friday accused of assaulting an ex-girlfriend. A source said: 'It was very dramatic. "Everyone was in their costumes and Danny was filming this polo scene when an hour later police suddenly turned up to arrest one of the extras. It was shocking.' Tipped off The assault is alleged to have happened at a house in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. Police were called to the address at 2am on May 31. He made no plea and was given conditional bail until he returns to the city's crown court on July 7. Production company Happy Prince, which makes the drama Rivals, said: 'On the 4th June, the police visited the set regarding an unrelated matter involving a supporting artist. Jamie Borthwick 'suspended from EastEnders after using shocking disabled slur backstage at Strictly'

Jamie Borthwick has been suspended by the BBC after he used a slur aimed at disabled people on the set of Strictly. A video obtained by The Sun showed the EastEnders actor using the term 'm********s' to describe residents of Blackpool where the show was being filmed at the time. He was reportedly backstage during rehearsals with Wynne Evans who could be heard saying 'Oh my God' when he made the remark. In the video clip, Jamie and Wynne were reportedly sharing their excitement at being selected for a place on the Strictly tour. Jamie has since issued an apology for using the slur, saying: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning.' Jamie added he did not fully understand the derogatory nature of the term he used but now that he is aware, he is 'deeply embarrassed'. The soap star said his actions were not a true reflection of his views and he reiterated how sorry he is. The BBC told The Sun on Sunday: 'This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. We have robust processes in place for this.' Jamie, who has played Jay Brown on EastEnders since 2006, is now said to have been suspended from the show. Jamie, laughing, is reported to have said: 'Blackpool by the way. 'Absolute m********s'.' MailOnline has contacted the BBC for further comment. It's the second Strictly-related controversy Jamie has found himself in after he and Wynne were reportedly blasted by BBC bosses over a shocking sex toy video. In footage obtained by The Sun on Sunday in April, the two stars were filmed backstage after the opera singer sent a sex toy to the EastEnders star. Filmed just two days after Wynne was recorded making a vile sexual comment to Jamie about pro dancer Janette Manrara, the video sees Jamie claiming the toy was sent to Birmingham 's Utilita Arena reception by Wynne. The actor smiles as he holds up the rubber toy, then points the camera at Wynne who is seen shirtless as he practices with professional dancer Neil Jones. Jamie says: 'Look at what he bought me. I opened it up and he surprised me with this, didn't he. It's so funny.' Jamie reportedly shared the offensive clip on the Strictly contestant Whatsapp group. A source told The Sun: 'As soon as BBC executives were made aware of this shocking and immature footage being shared they formally addressed the issue and reminded the pair they had to act professionally. 'The men were acting extremely immaturely and inappropriately, considering it was a family show, and many cast members didn't share their crass sense of humour. 'Bosses were horrified and shocked, hoping to nip the issue in the bud, unaware the video had been shared more widely.' They added that the pair thought the video was funny, yet while they saw the hilarity, others didn't, especially as Strictly is a family show. It came after Wynne was recorded crudely suggesting a three-way sex session with Janette, using the hugely demeaning term 'spit roast'. Janette did not make a complaint against the singer, yet he apologised for the vile remark aimed at tour host Janette, when footage emerged of the comment at the tour's press launch. He was then axed from the tour.
