Brookside's iconic and heartbreaking Damon and Debbie episodes are now available to stream
Back in the '80s, they were the nation's darlings, their love story captivating millions of viewers. However, the tale of Brookside 's Damon Grant and Debbie McGrath ended in a heart-wrenching tragedy when he was brutally murdered.
As soap fans gear up for the return of some of Brookside's most beloved characters in the Hollyoaks /Brookside crossover episode to celebrate the former's 30th anniversary, they can also tune into the mini spin-off series that left Channel 4 viewers 'in bits'.
Damon and Debbie is the iconic three-part 'soap-bubble' aired in 1987, tracing the journey of two of Brookside's most adored characters, teenage sweethearts Damon (Simon O'Brien) and Debbie (Gillian Kearney), as they fled to York to evade their disapproving parents in Liverpool who objected to their relationship due to the class divide between them.
Damon, the youngest son of two of Brookside's most popular characters Bobby Grant (Ricky Tomlinson) and wife Sheila (Sue Johnston), struggled to find work but fell head over heels for schoolgirl Debbie.
The mini-series about their whirlwind romance included a 'mock' marriage in a hotel room before Damon was savagely stabbed by an unknown attacker on a dark riverbank, dying in Debbie's arms, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Damon's funeral drew an audience of 7 million viewers and his death led to the fragmentation of the Grant family.
Nearly four decades later, viewers can catch the mini series again on STV Player, and Brookside's Facebook page was swamped with reactions when a snap from the tear-jerking Damon and Debbie episodes was shared.
One viewer wrote: "OMG broke my heart when Damon died."
Another posted: "Absolutely loving watching Brookside all over again and remembered there being no spoilers back in the day. Nothing could have prepared us for Damon's death."
A third supporter remarked: "Omg .... soaps have been amazing. But this storyline outnumbers any corrie , emmerdale or eastenders. Amazing but real. This was an amazing soap."
Someone else revealed: "18th November, 1987 I cried and cried and cried. Firstly I loved him and wanted to marry him (I was 13) but secondly (sure it's not a spoiler) ~ Damon's death! !"
A fifth declared: "I'm not prepared for this episode again."

And all three have connections to long-standing resident, Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard). A source told The Sun Online: 'They were all hugely popular characters in the 90s and had to be a part of the anniversary. 'Hollyoaks might have a lot of younger viewers now but bosses really wanted to remember the 90s roots, so there's set to be some real nostalgia coming up.' The stars have already begun filming their scenes. Hollyoaks declined to comment when approached by The Sun Online. During their time on Hollyoaks, all three became central to major storylines that defined the show as a soap for younger audiences – especially when it came to Tony. It's been years since any of the characters have appeared in the Hollyoaks world, although Redmond has repeatedly reprised his role of Finn for guest stints to mark special occasions. Arriving on the show as a free-spirited heartthrob in 1998, Finn became close friends with Tony Hutchinson, even going into business together. While he left in 2002, he later returned for a stint in after-watershed spin-off Hollyoaks Later, the 20th anniversary in 2015, and again for Christmas in 2017. His last appearance was in 2018, when Finn left for Margate after taking the fall for Cindy Cunningham (Steph Waring) stealing £10,000 for the purchase of a restaurant. Natalie Casey's Carol arrived on the soap in 1996, but hasn't been seen since 2000. She also had close ties to both Finn and particularly Tony, with whom she had a will they/won't they relationship. Eventually, she left to perform on cruise ships, confessing her feelings to Tony before she did so in special Hollyoaks: Boys Do Barca. Finally, Dominic (played by Nick Pickard's real-life brother, John) is Tony's half-brother, and appeared on screen from 2005 to 2010. 7 Tony is a long-standing favourite on the soap Credit: Lime Pictures 7 Finn is Tony's best friend and business partner Credit: Lime Pictures 7 Carol went abroad to live her dreams of being a singer Credit: Mersey Television During that time, the character was seen trying to build a relationship with his estranged sibling. Police initially probed whether it was a gangland hit linked to his former job, but are now treating the tragedy as a murder-suicide. Dawn's heartbroken son Callum Kerr, an actor and singer, and his grieving sister Amanda want their mum left out of her husband's funeral. Advertisement They have 'firmly' requested Andrew's family not to include her in their service and urged Dawn's friends not to go or post pictures of the couple together. Callum and Amanda wrote in a family statement posted on their social media today: 'It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death.' The siblings claim murder-suicide is the 'prevailing hypothesis', adding: 'There is also no evidence whatsoever of any third party's involvement at this stage'. They will be climbing Sicily's Mount Etna to mark what would have been their mum's 58th birthday on May 18 next year.
