
Exploring Egypt's timeless wonders with AmaWaterways

Down, down we go, our group on excursion from AmaWaterways' AmaLilia, the line's newest Nile riverboat. The colors on the walls are amazingly vivid, sealed for millennia underground in one of the most arid climates in the world.
We pass images of vultures and cobras protecting the pharaoh buried within. Hieroglyphics cover every surface, baffling to all but the experts. One of the smaller tombs is that of the famous King Tutankhamen, a mere 28 feet below ground. The nearly intact chambers, uncovered in 1922, were filled with 5,398 funerary items, many of solid gold.
Such are the rewards of a cruise up the world's longest river. At every turn, guests can see the grand stone monuments produced by a civilization that existed 4,500 years before Columbus sailed for America.
Our eight-day cruise hit many highlights: the extensive temples at Karnak and Luxor; the colossal statues of Ramses II guarding Abu Simbel; and perhaps the most iconic icon of them all, the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Unlike for some on our trip, the Nile was not on my bucket list of travel destinations. But I would be the poorer for not having seen it, and I would call this sailing a prime example of "the thinking person's cruise," as one cruise executive has dubbed river voyages.

Seeing Egypt by water has several advantages. Uniquely, almost every can't-miss site in Egypt is concentrated along the Nile's banks. Moving from temple to temple by ship is easier and safer than traveling the Egyptian highways.
Breezes off the water can cool temperatures that reached 110 degrees on several days of our mid-April cruise.
Not to be overlooked is the sailing itself. Each morning, I'd greet the placid greenish river as we motored quietly along a shoreline of marsh grasses, date palms, low mud-brick compounds and minarets.
The meandering channel took us first close to one bank, then the other, and then past islands where seemingly endless rows of banana trees are cultivated beneath perpetually blue skies. Waterfowl and small green and blue wooden boats rowed by local fishermen animated the surface.
Now and then we'd pass a cement embankment, a clustered village, a pump station or a factory, but mostly it is a bucolic scene, both timeless and Old Testament familiar.

But perhaps the top benefit we enjoyed was the expertise of our two Egyptologists, Marwa Abbas and Randa Abdel Wahab, who sailed with us and without whom we would have no clue about what we were seeing.
I think that Wahab's cry of "yalla, yalla," (let's go!) after each viewing pause may be my most enduring memory from the cruise.
Our group was mostly couples in their 60s and older, about half Canadian, half American with a few Australians in the mix. The ship carries 82 passengers on four decks with two restaurants, a lounge, a small gym, a massage room, hair salon and a shaded sundeck with a pool.
I was able to tour the AmaLilia's sister ship, the AmaDahlia, while in Luxor and found the AmaLilia to be a little brighter and more contemporary, and its dinner-only Chef's Table restaurant is mostly enclosed rather than outdoors.
It is one of the newest of about 180 ships of similar design on the Nile, most sailing for brands unknown in North America, the AmaLilia's hotel director told me.
The itinerary begins with a three-night stay in Cairo (at the St. Regis Cairo), which affords a day at Giza (including a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum); a day visiting Saladin's massive Citadel and the older Egyptian Museum where King Tut's treasures are stored; and a fascinating half day in Coptic Cairo seeing Roman-era churches and a synagogue.

After a flight to Luxor, guests have seven days on the water before a final afternoon in Cairo, which we used to experience the chaos of the sprawling Khan el-Khalili street market. Except for that self-led excursion, we had a discretely armed security officer everywhere we went.
Food onboard the ship is about half Egyptian, half Western, paired with Egyptian wines. I didn't love every Egyptian item I tried but found at least half of it to be really good; a sauced pasta-and-chickpeas dish surprised me with its flavor. The crew is eager to show off their national cuisine.
Evening entertainment included a screening of the 1978 film "Death on the Nile," a troupe of Nubian dancers and a hilarious contest in which guests were mummified in toilet paper.
Ama did a great job with transfers, providing a VIP passage through customs/passport control on the front end and a similar shepherding on the back end for a 4:45 a.m. flight home.

And the result? A slew of luxury experiences that feel modern, relevant, and distinctly their own. With the Jennifer Lopez collaboration, Rixos turned a luxury hotel brand into a global entertainment brand. How did they do it? By acting faster and more dynamically than most other luxury hospitality brands and by taping into a time when cultural events like Coachella, Burning Man, and Tomorrowland are merging live entertainment with more luxury. Interestingly, research supports this mash-up approach. The Experience Economy reveals as services commoditize, the brands that stand out create moments designed to be remembered and shared. For Rixos, the Jennifer Lopez collab was one such moment. Enrique Iglesias was a few months earlier. Next month, Michelin-star chefs will grace the property. But the success of this approach isn't risk free and hinges on precision partnerships — and that's where Rixos gets it right. In Cairo, the Gems of the Past Are Polished for the Future
It's a warm Tuesday evening in April, and Mazeej Balad's rooftop restaurant is packed with well-dressed Cairenes eager to experience the neighborhood's newest arrival. Kareem Nabil and Ahmed Ganzoury, the Egyptian duo behind the recently opened Mazeej Balad boutique hotel, welcome guests and pose for photos before we sit down for a dinner of koshary arancini and pickled lemon hummus. They are the force behind some of Egypt's most glamorous parties and events, as well as a handful of hot spots like Kiki's Beach, an oceanfront club on the country's North Coast, the Mediterranean-facing sweep west of Alexandria where the summer party scene is beginning to rival that of Mykonos. But with the bijou Mazeej Balad, Nabil and Ganzoury have turned their attention firmly to the capital. The hotel is located on a frenetic Cairo street where dented taxis vie for space with men on bicycles balancing trays of flatbreads on their head. Mazeej Balad's doorman, in a red jacket and jaunty bow tie, cuts a dashing figure at the hotel entrance. Behind him a burgundy carpet flows over a marble staircase like spilled wine, guiding guests into the 129-year-old building that once housed the Hôtel-Pension Viennoise and an embassy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the lobby a eucalyptus tree grows through the bottle-green-marble reception desk, light from a crystal chandelier reflects off the shiny checkerboard floor, and a sleek cantilevered staircase lures guests up to the rooftop. Ceiling frescoes featuring Egyptian abstract artist Kairo Lumumba's trademark squiggles lead to five individually designed suites. Artworks by other local and regional artists—figurative sculptures by Sam Shendi, abstract portraits by Sabhan Adam, among others—dot the rest of the hotel. 'From the start we wanted the interiors to feel like a dialogue between past and present,' says Nabil. 'The building already had so much to say. We just needed to listen.' I've been seduced by Cairo's intoxicating energy since I first visited on a solo trip 10 years ago: its crowded, dusty noisiness; its showstopping sights and ordinary backstreets; its heartbreakingly scruffy street cats and residents who broke into wide smiles whenever I made eye contact. On that trip I walked as much as possible—from the medieval citadel to Garden City on the banks of the Nile; from the leafy island of Zamalek to the busy bazaars of Khan el-Khalili—and I would jump into battered old taxis only when my legs got too tired or my shopping bags too heavy. A decade later it feels like everyone is talking about Cairo. Big projects are underway in and around the capital, like the much-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. It will join the salmon-hued neoclassical Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, which, for almost 125 years, has housed a large collection of pharaonic antiquities, including many of the treasures from Tutankhamen's tomb. When the new museum, which faces the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Menkaure, officially opens later this year, it will be the largest archaeological museum in the world and no doubt a magnet for visitors both domestic and international. Adding to the regional buzz are new satellite cities with Dubai-style residential complexes that have sprung up around Cairo in an effort to decentralize the capital and reduce congestion. But what I find more compelling is the quieter change that is spreading throughout the city's downtown. New places to stay, shop, and eat are calling people to spend time in the city's central neighborhoods, proving that innovation and preservation can coexist, that a modern sensibility can be compatible with a reverence for history. 'It doesn't need to be polished to be beautiful,' Nabil says of the neighborhood. 'My hope is that we keep its grit and its charm and just give it the love and attention it deserves.'

These Wrinkle-free Travel Pants Kept Me Cool on My 2-week Trip to Egypt and Petra—Even in 100-degree Temps
After visiting 50-plus countries, I've officially found the perfect travel pants. While that may sound like an exaggeration (nothing is truly ever perfect , right?), it's tough to find anything not to love about the flattering and comfy Coalatree Trailhead Pant. I found myself pairing these equally with hiking boots and tees for rugged days exploring the lunar landscapes of Wadi Rum, as well as cute sandals and button-downs for city days. The sweat-wicking, stain- and stink-proof fabric also meant I was able to wear these on repeat while traveling without having to constantly wash them, even after hiking through red sand dunes.
